On the other hand I can get a Giant Defy 2.5 in a kit for a grand from Cycle Superstore - this appeals as I honestly haven't much of a clue about buying accessories gear etc.

Is there much of a difference between the 2 bikes? I'm currently riding an old MTB for which the expression "clapped out" could have been invented.
