I think the CCTV type cameras were installed for the operator to monitor the surrounding environment following the vans being set on fire with the operator inside incidents.

Absolute joke. How is somebody who got their provisional licence in 2000 still on the road on a provisional?

How any insurer is giving them cover is even more of a joke, if someone can't pass the test within 5 years they have no business on the road.

The real joke is if he/she's been driving for 16 years on a provisional you can only assume that they'd have no problem passing a test.
It's just lazy/stupid not to do the test as it isn't that difficult. It also negates the need to do stupid things like turn away from a checkpoint.

    I wouldn't agree with that.

I used to know a few who were incapable of passing a driving test due to incompetence.

Others are illiterate and have significant issues around the theory test.

Is the open road with speed limits and signage the place for them?

As has already been said their ability to follow signage and instructions could prove extremely hazardous.
Also if they believe turning around and driving away from a check point is a good idea then illiteracy is probably the very least of their problems.

Mark my words, this will be tendered (At huge cost), won by GoSafe (With no competition) and cost the country millions in the next 5 to 10 years.

The reality is, you can build an ANPR set up for about €150 and all you need is some processing of the data captured. Does this reg have Insurance / Tax or NCT? No to any? Issue a fine.

This is so simple to implement it could literally be done in 3 months, and that's being generous. A couple of static sites and a mobile check or two for good measure.

Joined up thinking just don't exist here.

if you can supply ANPR cameras, the infrastructure and all the database work behind it to build a DB that does thousands of lookups from thousands of cameras every second, I will gladly tender for the contract and pay you that amount.

They wouldn't have a provisional if thats the case.

I see yesterdays gangland shooting in Dublin the Gardaí recovered a 7 Series BMW registration number 02-D-39051 from the scene of the shooting and took it away on a recovery truck. They then in their press conference referred to the car as a 5 Series, how hard can it be to identify a car when you actually have it in your possession and the registration number also states a 7 Series, the mind boggles at what level of IT or car knowledge the Gardaí have, shockingly sheite, do they need to contact BMW in Munich to assist?

I wouldn't look twice at a 5 Series but would take notice of a 7 Series if I spotted one on a day, telling people it's the wrong car when they actually have the car in question in custody is poor.

Nail on the head there, I knew from one look at the car on the news was a 7 series and in fairness they stand out a lot more.

If the van was to hit or kill someone I presume they would be able to put a massive claim in against the government for negligence, not much difference to allowing a drunk driver to continue their journey after being issued with points. Surely if there's a big enough mandatory charge of say €100 a tow there would be plenty of towing companies willing to facilitate it.

Haha I had no idea that's what it was called.
Inconsiderate behaviour for somebody with enough conviction to put one of those on their car.
