Not a tale of epic battles to get PBs, but a little tale of pride.

Had to drop the car to a garage this morning and there was nobody around to give me a lift back, nor were there any public transport options, so I took the hybrid out of the attic last night and threw it in the boot.

It has been at least 4 years, if not 5, since it last saw the light of day. When I put it together after dropping the car off, after a struggle to remove a black plastic bag from the mech that I was using as a makeshift glove to keep my hands clean when inserting the rear wheel, I set off.

It was as smooth as silk, gears shifted perfectly, not a bit of clatter, grinding or squeaking, just that nice road hum. I did have brake rub but at the first set of lights I realised it was because the tension spring on one side on the cantilever brakes had popped out, put it back in again and it was perfect.

I was wearing civvie runners though so the saddle was a little high in comparison to when I wore MTB SPDs.

I felt bad after ditching it for so long in favour of the sexier, more svelte, Ridley. Lance knew what he was doing riding those Trek machines, god bless him.

Did a spin around Mallorca at weekend.

Staying in south east, while the mountain running along the west coast is the big draw for cyclists.

While I really enjoyed the trek back and forth to mountains, the thing the stayed with me as most enjoyable was the 70km spin north from Porto Colom to Pollenca. Now the morning helped; full moon in west with clear sky and nice and cool. The sun started to rise about an hour or so in.

The roads were really quite, although I didn't get the chance to ride on the "Cami" roads on this spin. They are Mallorca's equivalent of boreens; narrow, really quite with reasonable surfaces. They just provide farm access in main. I must try and do a proper spin on them on next trip(did a lovely 20km section the previous day which was magic).

The traditional dry stone walls in interior are as pretty as what you'd see in east Galway and Mayo, but a different brown type stone.

It got warm about 4hrs in and hot for me shortly after, so just dialed back and enjoyed the ride through the mountains. They go pretty high but no silly gradients.

The driver's in Spain were as good as always.

Last spin yesterday ahead of Beara on Saturday.

69km over the Sally Gap and around a whole load of amazing places I don't know the name of. Made the mistake of wearing a long sleeve top and now have tan marks halfway up my arms. Stunning, stunning morning.

My back was complaining loudly the last 20. Christ knows what it'll be like in Kerry. Here's hoping a few Nurofen popped during the ride might allow me to finish.

Come do an evening spin, they said.
It will be grand, nice and easy, they said.

They bloody well deny saying it now!

    Not todays spin, but yesterdays.

Had planned a 75km route, ended up with 65. Rathfarnham into the Phoenix Park, out around Lucan and Leixlip, back into town via strawberry beds and home through Rathmines/Terenure.

    That was the plan anyway

Got out past Leixlip and one of the roads I wanted to take was closed for roadworks, so went on a detour out towards Maynooth. Only in Ireland would the closure of a 1km stretch of road result in a 9km detour...
Came back into town via the strawberry beds, punctured on Chapelizod road. Puncture fixed (cheers to the guy on the Planet X who asked did I need any more tubes), I decided to cut the lap of the Park I had planned and bailed home through Dolphin's Barn and Crumlin. The tube I replaced the puncture with had already been patched, and is obviously a dud, as I made it into work this morning fine, but had a completely flat tyre by 9pm - lift home for me so.

Anyway, glorious day out in all. I've only been out that direction twice before, but they're turning into some of my favourite roads in Dublin :)

27km last night and one of the most enjoyable spins ive had in a long time. Its amazing how much more pleasurable a new bottom bracket makes a cycle

Might as well ad my cycle in here, Did my first run to the office from Ashbourne this morning. just over an hour on the move and was very happy to be honest. My goal was to beat the early Ashbourne Connect into town and we met at the Finglas Flyover and I managed to get into my office at the same time I would have if I was on board.

Ass is killing me from the saddle which is a razor blade to be honest so need to invest in some shorts with padding. looking forward to return trip home tonight.

On Strava if anyone wants to connect. Click here

24.2Km @ 22.7kmph avg speed - happy to be out on the road again :-)

that road is Kellystown Lane, the worst road surface in Kildare bar none, so I hoping it gets a decent job done on it. you are correct some great roads for a spin around the area.

50km around Ratoath, curragha, Garristown and back in by Kilbride. Lots of nice old memories up around Garristown

Felt the benefit of the low cadence strength training today, able to push hard in a higher cadence. 30.5kmph average so happy with that

Cycled into work for the second time today, seemed to hit every. single. red. light. on the N11 from Cherrywood on, then had a car pull out in front of me on Leeson St at the junction of Hatch Street, so felt like I never had any momentum. Still though, five minutes faster than first time.

As LeMond said, it never gets easier, you just go faster - not that 22.8kmh is fast, but you take my point!

Puncture on my way into work this morning. It's the first time I've had to change a tire on a commute to work in 3 years so I was feeling the pressure when I pulled over at great gas 24/7 in Dardistown to change the tube.

All went well except I couldn't properly fasten my hand pump to the valve so I ended doing the last 5km on a half inflated tire, absolutely petrified something else would go wrong!

Not sure if I should replace the tires, they look fairly wrecked.

Replace the tires. You'll be kicking yourself when you have a series of punctures because the tires are worn.

Any guidelines as to when tires should be replaced? Like any telltale visible signs or if I've cycled x amount of kilometres on them?

It's a cheap Carrera with the stick tires still on it.

Depends on the tires, some have wear indicators on them. But if they're badly cut up and you've had them 3 years it's probably not a bad idea to change.

if they begin to look like sh1te/start getting a few punctures, get them off. I was also advised on here to help maintain tyres, to deflate the tyre every few weeks to make sure that there is nothing(stones/glass) in there and to keep the pumped to the correct pressure.

Thanks for the advice guys. I was considering changing them anyway so I think I'll go for it.

Been doing quick 25km spins in the morning before work but today decided I needed to go a bit further for stamina instead of speed. So,Clane to Allenwood to Rathangan to Naas and home, 61kms in fairly warm weather. However instead of a nice leisurely spin, I was more than a bit surprised when my cycling app said I was averaging 30kph with the last split at 34kph. I felt good and the short morning spins have helped up my speed but I was surprised how fast I was going regardless. Now 30kph might not be too much to,crow about for younger guys but I'm 47 with a bit of weight to,lose and I was booting it. I thought I might blow up somewhere but apart from the Hill of Allen where I had a bit of a dead legs moment, I kept pushing hard for the full cycle. Very happy with the spin today and looking forward to seeing if my morning spins help me keep the higher speeds up.

Only 12.5km, and only at 15m/h, but it there was 150m of climbing involved:P

More importantly I was accompanied by my 2 youngest - 11yo and 12yo, their first road spins on their new Islabikes

They enjoyed it. Suspect I may have an outlet for a couple of spare Garmins, and in a few years time I reckon I'll also be able to pffload a few wheels and other parts as they start their upgrade process....

Also reckon they'll have their club gear on tomorrow and will be waving red flags helping me marshal whichever corner I get in the Ras stage end in Skerries

Got 1.5 km and got a flat. Nothing with me so ended up walking home.
Ordering some gatorskins during the week.

Passed the 75,000k mark today since getting a Garmin and registering with Strava in 2012. :)

(The Veloviewer figure in my sig below indicates a slightly higher figure as it includes the occasional run/walk - don't know how to get it to show cycles only).
