Still have 4 problem calves in the shed. One still recovering from meningitis (my pet AAx) another from repeated bloating (doesn't look good in the immediate future) and the other two fingers crossed will be OK.
I'm looking forward to both of us having a bit of a hooley during the Summer in my brother's house in Inishowen Peninsula, Donegal. Date to be decided

Talk to the vet again about the bloating calf. It is possible to make a permanent vent in the side of an animal to let the gas off but it does have problems associated with it. He might be too small? Had it done here one time and got her to slaughter weight.

Had one here earlier in the year that kept bloating after feeding. Spent two weeks letting the has out of her side with a large gauge needle inserted into the left hand side. It stopped after a fortnight or so like I said. Keep the faith.

Vet did mention a trocar if he survives long enough to have one in place. The fecker bloated again during the week when he was on grass with his comrades that have been out for the last month. He bloats every 10 days or so and I have to stick him with a needle to let the gas off as well as injecting him with prescribed Buscopan when he blows up. Our Vet reckons that he has an abnormal intestine which is causing the problem. He is a calf that we bought in from a farmer that we buy from every year and is one of 40 odd calves bought from the same farm this year.
TBH my experience with trocar's is limited to one case over 30 years ago in a yearling heifer and that didn't end well :(

Went out today & found the daughter of my top 5 star cow (who has loads of milk) stealing off other (2&3 star) cows, she's got a great wt/age & now I know why, guess the 5* is going to look even better, & maybe the others not as good

:D I have a cow that will let any calf in the field have a suck and have a calf that sneaks in behind every cow for a quick top up. It's comical to watch :D:D

Have had afew here too and they all lived on, sticking them with a knife every week isn't sustainable anyway, our vet would only allow it two or three times before he'd put in a valve, he used to say you can put the worm doses through the valve, can't remember if i ever did it

Osmonds used to sell a vile smelling liquid, called Osmonds Cattle Oils. It workedon some types of bloat. Its long gone off the market, but if you want to try a tin, i have one lying on shelf somewhere.

I want to view the star ratings of heifers I'm going selling. Do I have to join ICBF to view them as I don't have an account with them

I think if you ring them they will tell you without being a member . Are you in the stars scheme?

I'm not but it would be handy if I could tell interested buyers their star rating and if it's for maternal or terminal

I was looking at a tractor on Donedeal last week that I liked. Looked out the window there on Saturday to see the cousin driving it up the road. He bought it from a guy over 60 miles away. Small world eh!:D

Was on a family day out yesterday. Doesn't happen too often so made the effort. Paid in and were looking around. Next thing hear a heap of shouting. A crowd of irelands tax paying finest starting knocking lumps out of each other. About twenty in total. As you can imagine it was mainly teenagers That were stewards. They didn't know what to do. It was fairly intimidating to be fair. They'd a fair job getting them off the premises then, guards landed. But sure what were they going to do in all fairness.
My day was kinda ruined. I hate all that stuff and I was just worried about whether there was going to be a gang hanging around outside. A group of Chinese girls were nearly dragged into the melee when it started.
Country is gone to f##k with people like this going around and they don't care. And still get paid every week. Sure why would you care I suppose with someone else to look after everything for you.

Just heard Irish Water signed a 10 year lease on their headquarters a week ago.
    Like, WTF?
Someone high up in the company, or a close relative, must own the building.

Don't you think NAMA would have extracted similar monies if they had had the chance?
Are NAMA even doing mid term rentals?

Once the lease was signed, Irish Water can sink or swim. The lease will either be paid or they (Irish water) will be sure for specific performance/breach of contract. There is a building on the Cavan Meath border was leased to house the electronic voting machines. They were scrapped but the lease continued to be paid.
