To be fair, I think it was down to the way they were installed. I didn't have a lot of purchase at the rear brake bridge mounting point, and as a result I couldn't use a leather washer between the frame and mudguard, then between the screw head and the guard as recommended.

Vibration over time stressed that point in both cases, and the guard snapped.

Disappointing, since they looked great

Get them shipped to a mate in NI/UK, or use Parcel Motel. It works out a bit cheaper. I have the polished SS 37mm's on mine and find them great.

They should be pretty durable - I've sent mine through trails, grass, muck, the works. You really do need the leather washers though, they're completely held on and strengthened by the tension you use installing them.

I've got s surly long haul trucker with Schwalbe marathon plus 26" 1.75" (width equates to 44.45mm). Should I be going for the 50mm fit like they say or is that too tight? What would be the disadvantage going for the 60mm mudguard?

Go for the biggest you can fit, especially if you're running chunky tyres, and set up like a tourer. Esp with the metal fittings that aren't as snap if something gets all stuck up in there.
