Looking for defender not gk. You are correct of course, but I'm going Pullisball in goals I think.

I don't think Theo is in doubt tbh. He'll either start wide or up front for Giroud. With a full pre-season behind him he should be firing at the start of the season.

I'll never forget the time he scored 3 goals and 2 assists against Newcastle a couple of seasons ago. 56 points as captain. That's what he's capable of.

My favourite ff moment it was an Xmas fixture and not many had him. Him getting a hat trick last game of last season was epic also. Walcott is my favourite ff player.

Everywhere I look I'm seeing teams with 0.5 banked. Lots of people going with Lukaku for week 1 and planning to transfer to his Belgian buddy then, or just feel the squad is better the way it is?

I'd considered that option myself, but to be honest, I want to go with a team that I haven't already got plans to change so that I can use my transfers to gradually cheapen up my team as the value cheapies come out of the woodwork, to allow for Aguero when his time comes.

just noticed that Blind/Jones have started as the centre back pairing in each of Man U's last 3 friendlies. I hadn't considered Jones, but may do now

Smalling the sole 6.0 million option and all.

yep surprised me was just looking on Soccerway and copped it. not good news for Smalling if Blind is getting the nod over him. one more friendly to go v PSG if the same holds true i may have Jones starting off, he's an all-action defender and a good shout for baps when keeping a cs

yes cant understand jones ahead of smalling but if he starts against PSG again.....

LVG has said that he wants to have a left-footed centre back.
Blind should start the first week or two with Rojo then taking over.

LVG seems to have multiple options for each defensive position.

    CB: Smalling/Jones/Rojo/Blind/Carrick etc.
    RB: Darmian/Valencia/Jones
    LB: Shaw/Blind/Rojo

    Nightmare from an fpl perspective!

    Prodston probably.

    And Henderbus.

    And AndrosTownsendSpacecraftExperiece.

And lots of double entendres about Mickeys.

    For a start.

I'm a little from column a and a little from column b. I may go with Lukaku for the first week or longer depending how he does, switching him to the cheapie of the month to fit Aguero for Costa or Rooney. I'm also looking at an expensive 3rd mid who can be downgraded as another route to Aguero. I think this approach may give maximum flexibility to follow bandwagons while switching to Aguero without necessarily wildcarding, while wildcarding is always a fall back.

Ideally I'd wildcard GW 6 or 7 as the fixtures switch around.

I'm trying to not plan using my wildcard this year. Every year I plan it out to use it early, and it doesn't work out badly because I've planned it well. But, what seems to happen every year, is that a week comes along where I need it more. Injuries, suspensions, my choices not going the way I hoped they might. I've made 4 transfers in a week at times. I think I'll be better served using my wildcard on 1 of those weeks this year.

Wondering the same myself. Currently on wollscheid but haven't looked closely yet.

Are there many others going without WBA defensive coverage from the start? I'm settled on courtois as my goalkeeper. In the short term i think there are better 4.5m options in defense considering their opening fixtures (cognisant of the fact that they kept cleanies against bigger teams last year but that doesn't necessarily mean they'll do it again this year). I'll be bringing in cover once from GW5 all going well.

This. I'm trying to build a flexible enough side that I am not forced to Wild Card early to put in King Kun. Starting with a cheapy 3rd Striker and an expensive 3rd midfielder gives you good options.

I currently have 4.0m banked. But that's with no Chelsea or City cover

Both sides are facing a tough enough opening 3 games. I'm happy to go with no Man City cover but I'm reluctant to go with no Chelsea cover also.

Everywhere I turn, every article I read people are still placing Southampton in the must have category for defence. Do they still deserve this tag ?

    I have serious reservations.

Forster is out injured. Will Stekelenburg have the same impact ? Doubtfull.

Bertrand is injured (may or may not be back in time for the start but will have missed pre-season in any event)

Clyne - Gone. Last season you had to have one or both of Clyne and Bertrand. Will Soares fill that gap automatically ? Maybe, maybe not.

Schneiderlin - Gone How much did he contribute to Southamptons defence last season ? You might say not much. I think Fonte and the other CB are about to find out.

I know the same thing happened after 2013-2014 but can Koeman pull it off 2 years running ?

I have no doubt that if I'm wrong, this post will be dredged up to pillory me with later on!

Do you see yourself adding it in before the deadline or is there a GW2 plan there? That's a lot of funds to keep unused.

They're not a must have anymore. But if you can get Yoshida in starting at 4.5 then that is really good value all the same.

Yeah I'll not have more than 1.0 unused by opening day. I really like the current draft but it is a lot of money. I don't want to be planning on GW2 transfers. Fact is somebody is going to have a great GW1 and everybody will be getting them in so I don't want to have another transfer already planned.

But this is a good base team to have, and there's wiggle room to get in the bigger hitter depending on who gets back first. (Sanchez/Aguero)

That's my thinking too. Of Yoshida gets game time then 4.5 should be good value otherwise avoid until we see some evidence of Koeman someone how putting another top defence together which will be some trick considering those unavailable/sold.

I like their early fixtures. First 5 fixtures look as good as any other team's for clean sheets.

Thing about Yoshida is Saints could confirm a big cb signing on Monday 10th August and you've got a dud in your team right from the off. High risk for me.

Same for Target, Bertrand responds well to treatment and suddenly surprisingly available for GW2.

Saylor looks the only genuine 4.0 contender barring more injuries. Colo hasn't kicked a ball preseason yet, and some northeast newspapers I read were more wondering who'd be partnering Saylor.
