Took a trip down to Greystones at the weekend from Howth for the brass monkeys race. 2 of us on the way down on an uneventfulish sail in a good breeze.

Everything hurts after 4 really tough days of sailing in Kinsale.

Great shot of the class 2 winners here with us following close behind!

Great Picture, how did you get on down there?

Why has that guy got his hand in the water? is he trying to retrieve the spinnaker sheet for the drop?

Will the boat be back in Dublin for Dun Laoghaire regatta?

Someone with a better knowledge of the rules may correct me but isn't the Roy Keane lookalike on the spinnaker sheet hiking out in an illegal manner?

Edit: I see it being done on the following boat too. I though you weren't allowed go between the two rails?

Almost everyone hikes out under the upper and waist held by the lower lifeline.

    Is it legal?

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,897 ✭✭✭Vexorg

Yup sure is... From the Rule Book
    49 CREW POSITION; LIFELINES
49.1 Competitors shall use no device designed to position their bodies
outboard, other than hiking straps and stiffeners worn under the
    thighs.
49.2 When lifelines are required by the class rules or the sailing
instructions they shall be taut, and competitors shall not position any
part of their torsos outside them, except briefly to perform a
necessary task. On boats equipped with upper and lower lifelines, a
competitor sitting on the deck facing outboard with his waist inside
the lower lifeline may have the upper part of his body outside the
    upper lifeline.
If the class rules do not specify the material or
minimum diameter of lifelines, they shall comply with the
corresponding specifications in the ISAF Offshore Special
    Regulations.
Note: The ISAF Offshore Special Regulations are available at the
    ISAF website.

Technically you could argue that the crew member holding the spinnaker sheet was not facing outboard, but he may not be the spinnaker trimmer, he may be taking the slack out of the lazy sheet for the guy/girl who appears to be trying to retrieve it on the opposite side, which is covered by "except briefly to perform a necessary task". Well thats my understanding of that section, a rules expert may know better :).

    Thanks for that.
For some reason, I though it was against the rules. I couldn't find the rule.

4th overall so no silver :( Yeah the boat's back so see you there next week?

Yeah it's legal as long as you're inside the lower rail.

Just back from a delivery trip over to Cardiff. Left Sunday morning in lovely sunshine and light winds but we motored the whole way with a few hours of sail up. My phone battery died early monday morning so wasnt able to use my camera till the afternoon when we were near cardiff. Interesting entry into Cardiff bay through a lock system.

Passed this cat shortly after leaving howth. with the light wind he wasnt going anywhere fast

    sunset sunday night

moon coming out sunday evening. We had a really bright moon when we went off watch around 1am but came back up about 4 to pitch black and an eclipse.
    20150927_192936.jpg

the green triangles are other vessels in the area showing up on the ais. that was few hours before approaching milford haven. when we had got past milford a mile or 2 we looked back to see what must have been a massive tanker lite up like a xmas tree coming out of milford. the stern area and bow section were so bright. about 5 minutes later the lights had been turned off and you could barely make out the nav lights as she steamed away 20150927_192921.jpg

approaching the entarnce to cardiff. the water was very low and we were hitting the mud at times. the tides in the bristol channel are unreal and the water is a manky brown colour. That was at the bottom of the tide and the next high water was a 13 meter raise

Not a great photo of a photo. This was the marina area before development. we were moored up in the basin at the back. you can see mud flats
there aswell. they are gone now as the locks control the water in the bay

Down here in sunnier climes, its our sailing season which lasts until about May.

    so1x7l.jpg

    2llix3c.jpg

18-20 knot winds yesterday, which made for some interesting time both on the water and in the water.

At one stage I looked back to see the wake from the boat - honestly, it was like a powerboat, such was the speed.

All good and well until the left bow went under a wave and we went over.

    Great fun. :D

Spotted this little guy nestling close in under the East side of the Old Head of Kinsale on Sunday and he was still there Monday given the forecast. At some stage Saturday night he'd been South of Cork harbour heading East when he threw in a sharp -understandably- 130 deg turn for the shelter of the head. That must have been exciting but nowhere nears as exciting as trying to run into Cork harbour.

Further North inshore and tucked in almost as closely was this big tanker waiting to slip in to Whitegate.

Tough way to earn a living in weather like this!
