Paid for my 'new' engine today. Nervous enough tbh, looks dry and it runs fine so here's hoping it's a good go-er and not an oil burner etc.

Going to do the clutch while the engine is out. If i can get one cheap... before tuesday... :pac:

Trying to think of anything else i should do while the engine is out. Chain tensioner? Water pump?

I'd take the view do anything that you can while the engine is out that will make it easier if that makes sense?

Sounds like you got lucky with the engine you sourced, do everything you can to futureproof it and enjoy a couple years hassle free driving :)

Trying to avoid a money pit situation too (LOL). engine swap is going to come in closer to €1k and it could turn out to be a pile of poo anyway. I think i've lost my mind.

Does the flywheel side crankshaft oil seal ever leak on them?

Personally anything outside the bell housing I'd leave until I knew the engine was sound.

Know the feeling when i had the volvo.

    Paint 2800 for it

New front brake discs and pads timing belt kit with water pump and fluids change cost 850 quid inc labour

    4 new uniroyal rainsport 3's

Then it started acting up and letting me down badly while being a very poring car compared to what went before.

Ended up selling it off for 2500 after 6 months

    I need to stop driving.

I've been driving stupidly fast lately, and I think it's been covering the fact that I've been just that bit misereable. Belting along at ..well, a very high speed.... might be exciting enough to blow the grey away for a bit - but it's bloody stupid with hindsight. This is getting beyond the pale to the point where five minutes after I've slowed it back down to non-stupid speeds I'm ****ing terrified. Because if it doesn't stop, something bad is going to happen.

It sounds insane. It's only after the fact that I realise I really didn't want to do that.

    Everything okay man?

Its hard to know with big jobs if they are worth it (says the kop out who now drives a honda :D )

I have a few de-stress routes where I don't drive that fast they are mainly 80kph routes, but there are loads of bends and twists in them that make them fun, and something to do when I feel like murdering someone.

    Maybe find something like that?

Thats probably a good way to judge it. The crank oil seals aren't known to be troublesome but it'd be a shame not to for the price of one. Then just drive it for a few months, do more then if it proves itself to be good.

The only thing bugging me is that the oil in the replacement engine was much blacker than i'd usually allow for so maintenance may not have been so stringent. It's all a bit of a lottery though, my current engine had a full history.

Would you take up downhill mountain biking, surfing or track days or something? Getting regular full on adreniline fixes in a car on public roads will eventually end badly. Adrenaline sports give you a great lift but it tends to wear off so you have to go bigger, faster etc. to get the same buzz.

I'm honestly not sure. Sometimes yes, sometimes no. It's hard to put into words and maybe this isn't the right place for it.

This is a good idea for a thread.

Sailing believe it or not is another sport to consider. I've never considered my mortality as much as since I started sailing.

My 60hp estate is not as quick as I'd want it for the twisty roads but still more fun than my 90hp Astra. Can't wait to get a MK1/MK2 Golf GTI or something similar pre-1985.

Sailing sounds like a sort of fun. I'll have to consider the mortality of my wallet. Can barely keep the car going.

It normally is! Most people just service every 10k if even. The blackness sort of accumulates I think. A couple of regular services should clear it out. If you wanted you could take off the rocker cover and look at the cam lobes to see of they're patchy. If they are it's a sign it been running low on oil and it's worn the coating off. Think it's a nickel based coating on them. Good time to change the rocker cover gasket too.

Here's the cover off my own engine. It looks as though it's been ran on low oil going by the patchiness of the lobes. The oil pissing out the bung and rocker cover were another hint :V

Hah! That's no reflection on rough winds, or the overnight I did from Dublin to Wexford, where at 6am we were battling massive seas and strong winds!
Nothing like it! You in a yacht or dinghy?

I started sailing at the age of 39, both yachts and dinghies, doing a masters thesis this year and not crew on a yacht (did tactician on the last yacht I was on) but thinking of focussing on cats as opposed to dinghys in that club and reenlisting in Howth for Yachts

Apart from the initial outlay on gear after you get into it, as crew it will cost you sfa. Most sailing clubs are desperate for members/crew, it has a bit of a high brow profile but it's nowhere near the "snobby" sport people think it is. I started at a seriously old age, and found nothing but a welcome.

After getting caught to work the whole bloody weekend third in a row and next weekend too the most annoying part is car was getting wheel bearing done Friday when I was suppose to be off this will be my second time to have to change dates and I'm bloody sick of listening to it at this stage. Might be able to get them to do it Saturday and get my dad to bring it fingers crossed but saturday would be their busy day.

Jayus, I thought you were doing work experience?

Anyone here like Sarah Ellen on facebook, anyway she is a model in Australia and she got a new car and had a picture of the steering wheel, anyway for some reason I thought it was a Ferrari, took me a few seconds to realize it was a Peugeot. I was like there must be good money in that modeling.

I learned to sail in college, even had a rip on a 4 man Cat in Clew Bay.
    Terrifying isn't the word. Haha

It's really frustrating when that happens especially if you made plans too but what can you do I guess that's what comes with work experience hopefully you can rearrange oh I know only too well of having the car in the garage

Saw an M235i on the Link earlier today, driven by an older woman, she was behind me when I decided to overtake an Arctic, I wasn't by any means going slow and when I pulled in she passed me doing at least 200 with ease. Some woman!

I used to race the yachts on my windsurf board. Always look so boring on a yacht until I actually got a few spins out on one. Is was a stripped out J24 racing yacht so quick enough! A much better feeling of speed and the wind moving around you than I expected. Good aul buzz and alot more social than windsurfing which is a lonely aul sport in more ways than one.

LOL the sheer chaos I've experienced sailing.

    1. 30 knot winds which the boat couldn't cope with and having to physically try to stop it hitting the cliffs off Howth
    2. That six am incident
    3. Grounding the boat, and flying off my feet, landing on the deck with someone on me, to then leaning as far out as possible to release it while clinging onto a rope
    4. Cats in 20 + knot winds, relying on footholds and trapezes.
    5. Capsizing a cat, having to then climb on the fellow crew member and stand on their harness holding onto a rope for balance to right the boat

Serious fun but not for the faint hearted.

It does look boring half the time most of the crew are sitting on the side, but someone is doing tactics, someone is prepping to tack etc

I crewed on a J24 for a while, twas busy!

Very social sport, you must work together
