You might have to rebuild the topology (not a strong point with OSM data)

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,215 ✭✭✭Rowley Birkin QC

Cheers. That Overpass Turbo is a pretty nifty piece of kit.

  • Registered Users Posts: 225 ✭✭ManAboutCouch

    Indeed it is.

To get the most from it you might need to get familiar with how OpenStreetMap tags (or Key/Value pairs) work. There's an exhaustive list of tags used in Ireland maintained here: http://taginfo.openstreetmap.ie/ which is updated daily.

The OSM Wiki maintains the global list. As you can imagine there can be some cases of disagreements / overlaps etc. as accepted usage is constantly evolving.

Hi, I'm looking for shapefile or polyline of all public roads in Ireland. I have to import it to Qgis. I managed to downlaod one for the major national roads and motorways from

    http://www.diva-gis.org/gdata

but as I said it only shows major ones.

    Any clues will be helpful.

    Thanks.

It might not have *every* road in the country, but OpenStreetMap has almost all of them, available for free under an open licence. Coverage is improving daily as editors like you and me add more. You can download shapefiles of OSM data for Ireland from GeoFabrik here: http://download.geofabrik.de/europe/ireland-and-northern-ireland.html

Thanks for your help, I was just going through some Qgis tutorial and it mentioned about open street map and how easy is to export desired piece of land.

The stuff from geofabrik is brilliant. This is exactly what I was looking for. All in 1.

    Thanks for that ManAboutCouch !!!

    You're welcome.

One issue to watch out for with the GeoFabrik extracts is that only contain a small subset of the features in the OSM database. Multipart features (think lakes with islands etc.) aren't in the files nor are the majority of point features.

If you need something that isn't included as standard you have a few options:
You can pay GeoFabrik to tailor their downloads for you (this is one of the ways their business funds itself) details here: http://www.geofabrik.de/data/shapefiles.html

You could use the Overpass-Turbo service I mentioned above.

Or use the .pbf extracts which are on the same download page as the shapefiles. If you're working with the .pbf's you'll need to import them into some sort of database to use them. PostGIS is the usual (open source) recommendation, but there is a bit of a learning curve involved.

Hi all, i need to access GIS mapping data for the forestry of Ireland for my thesis project , i have contacted both Coillte and ITGA but as expected they are extremely slow at responding. Does anyone know where i might be able t track down these maps ?? any input greatly received , cheers

  • Registered Users Posts: 225 ✭✭ManAboutCouch

Have you tried contacting The Forest Service?

Details of who to contact here: http://www.agriculture.gov.ie/forestservice/forestservicegeneralinformation/abouttheforestservice/forestcoverdatasets/

Alternatively, is the Corine Landcover dataset of any use to you? It's downloadable in shapefile format, details here: http://gis.epa.ie/GetData/Download

thanks for the reply , i'll give them a go tomorrow and see if they are any quicker but government departments arent known for their lightning speed !

i cant seem to access that download in my GIS for some reason , i'll have another go at it and see what they are

    cheers

Something that's maybe not so much GIS as web development but still worth asking in here I hope!

This article (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_nuclear_power_stations) has a table which has northings and eastings. I'd like that table to show decimal degrees as some other similar articles show. The site that provides the coords also has this info stored. So along with 57° 15′ 35″ N, 12° 6′ 39″ E they also have the equivalent 57.259722, 12.110833 which is the format I would like.

Anyone know an easy way to get the full table to show these coords instead?

  • Registered Users Posts: 225 ✭✭ManAboutCouch

Most Desktop GIS software include functions for doing that, but you can do it in Excel too. Probably the simplest way is to create a function and apply that to the cells with the DMS data. Here's a step-by-step: http://www.extendoffice.com/documents/excel/1497-excel-convert-decimal-degrees-to-degrees-minutes-seconds.html (Yes, the article title is for DD->DMS, but there's a function there for DMS->DD too)

Cheers. I tried copying the table out and doing that during the week but no dice as it messes up the formatting.

Ideally, I was hoping to adjust the wiki table code so that instead of pulling the D M S coords it would pull the decimal degrees from the Geohack site. I've seen other tables that use this formatting.

Just realised the link is wrong in the original post and I can't edit... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_nuclear_power_stations

    Hi all,

I am having a problem with my projects in ArcGIS. I am using ArcGIS 10.2 and have AutoCAD drawings using ITM (projected rather than geographic even though I'm not sure what that means - as that's the only way I can view the data I think). I also have a pile of data in ING which ArcGIS is transforming for me, but the data is not lining up correctly - at least 15m out, and I'm not sure why.

    Has anybody any advice!?

    Thanks!!!

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,081 ✭✭✭GetWithIt

I think this explains the discrepancy and how you can go about transforming your data correctly.

    http://www.esri-ireland.ie/software/arcgis/free-mapping-software/ig-itm

The link indicates the solution is supported up to 10.1 but I suspect that's due to the link being a little old rather than anything untoward with the 10.2 release which you have.

    Thanks! I will try that!

I am looking for ideas, am doing a college project using Arcgis and CSO data. I need to create a unique map using this info, other public datasets can be introduced if need be, there is such a broad range of info available that most ideas ive had are daft or too complicated for a college project. any ideas welcome. thanks

How many maps do you have to make?

In the example we were shown there were 4 maps on one sheet showing results of 2 queries on population analysis.

im leaning towards something like diplaying all private septic tanks currently in or within 50m-100m of sensitve areas i.e SAC or rivers

The handiest thing is probably do a few chloropleth maps, my memory on what's exactly in CSO data is a bit hazy but you could probably do one on religions or the deprivation index.

You could also try a Cartogram on population density which would turn out something like this: http://i.telegraph.co.uk/multimedia/archive/01494/ireland_1494150i.jpg

You can get the script for doing it from here: http://arcscripts.esri.com/details.asp?dbid=15638

And instructions on how to install it here: http://www.gislounge.com/how-to-make-area-cartogram-maps-in-arcgis/

Yeah that would be very doable, all you would have to do is create a buffer around the SACs or rivers, then run a select query to select private septic tanks within it.

you could create a surface (raster) if you have the stats and deds..something like a deprivation index or population density and then extrude...basically a glorified choropleth map

    e.g.:

You could also do maps of all the water point pressures on SACs e.g. IPPC licenced facilities, quarries etc and/or managed waste water treatment facilities.

There is a pile of stuff on the EPA website, including all the water quality info which you could upload. Maybe you could relate the amount of septic tanks to water quality and see if there is a link? Not sure exactly how you'd approach this, maybe people on here would have suggestions. I think you could run a location query on all water quality results within say 250m of a septic tank or waste water treatment facility? You might have to sort upstream results from downstream manually....not sure, but if you too a single catchment this might be do-able.

This is a less complicated, but I think there is a list of qualifying interests at each SAC - maybe you could relate the septic tanks to the watery ones (i.e. fish, lamprey, etc). Even more controversial could you see if the water quality in SAC rivers is actually better than non SAC rivers!!

ArcGIS is a broad term as it's used across the Esri product stack. Do you mean to make a web application that consumes an ArcGIS server map service or something else?

  • Registered Users Posts: 34 tomatofruit

That is something i would like to be able to do, but for this project it is just a straightforward comparative analysis of 2 maps

Does anyone have a shapefile that shows Dublin postcodesthat they can share?

I've had a look around and can't locate one. Also can't get them out of OSM.

    Any help appreciated. Thanks.

Did you try cso.ie? You can download a fair few data sets from there, this mapping tool might help narrow down what you need: http://census.cso.ie/sapmap/
