This looks like it could be pretty good.
    "
EX MACHINA Starring Oscar Isaac, Domhnall Gleeson, and Alicia Vikander U.S. Teaser Trailer Debut!

Alex Garland, writer of 28 Days Later and Sunshine, makes his directorial debut with the stylish and cerebral thriller, EX MACHINA. Caleb Smith (Domhnall Gleeson), a programmer at an internet-search giant, wins a competition to spend a week at the private mountain estate of the company's brilliant and reclusive CEO, Nathan Bateman (Oscar Isaac). Upon his arrival, Caleb learns that Nathan has chosen him to be the human component in a Turing Test—charging him with evaluating the capabilities, and ultimately the consciousness, of Nathan’s latest experiment in artificial intelligence. That experiment is Ava (Alicia Vikander), a breathtaking A.I. whose emotional intelligence proves more sophisticated––and more deceptive––than the two men could have imagined."

That looks quite cool. The trailer started giving away a bit much so stopped before the end. It's got me hooked though.

Domhnall and director Alex Garland attended the Irish premiere and it seems to on release here this weekend, good reviews so far

The trailer doesn't give anything away. The film is excellent, really smartly written. Every time I thought I had it figured out, Garland's script went a completely different way so that I was kept guessing until the very end.

A friend was at the premier last night, and said it was excellent. Looking forward to it now.

    just back from this today.

went in expecting a jazzed up episode of the twilight zone and got exactly that.

dont know if its for everyone but i enjoyed it. the effects are lovely and understated and the preformances all around gets the job done admirably.

theres a nice sinister element in it at times as your not entirely sure who to trust and this keeps the drama in it bubbling along on a nice sublte level right till the end when it all pans out to its conclusion.

and hey its got full frontal female nudity !

    cant go wrong there.

    :D

7/10 from meself. not GREAT, but enjoyable, nearly a high 6 TBH as its more a flim you could watch at home on DVD. For joe public i'd say a 6/10 as its not really a mainstreamer ya'd bring your mates to. STILL nice to see stuff like this getting made

Seen this tonight and was very impressed with it as the adds really don't give anything away about what kind of film you are going into to watch.

The acting was just fantastic in it as you really don't know who to trust or what is going to happen next as there was so many thirst and turns in the film.
But i did point out when i 1st seen the Asian girl in the house that was another AI
What i got from it that Nathan was also showing us that google is bad and that from it he was able to find out Caleb perfect girl from his porn history and model the AI off what he's into is nuts. Just comes to show that us men if we met a girl that is our type we will fall for them in now time

The end was a bit meh from me that was the only down point.
How does she re charge ? as didn't she need a proper charge point ?

Basically what i got from it is that girls robots or not are going to mess and f with your mind LoL

Out of everything in the film I lol'd that that's something you have an issue with.

Seen this a couple of days ago. Was a little disappointed it looked good but not much else. A 4/10 for me.

I thought the ending was ok!
I guess a super genius AI is able to figure out how to charge themselves!
I would like to see what happened next though
how does she get on in the real world with no where to go, knows no one, has no money etc

I seen this on Wednesday. It was ok.Not the best film I have ever gone to see. I thought it was quite pridictable really. I had guessed a few things before they were revealed in the film. They were quite obvious really. I thought it kinda silly in parts too. I agree they do keep you guessing about who to trust who is telling the truth. Its quite load in parts too. The acting in it is very good. There is some lovely scenes in it but not a lot of action really.

    Live long and Prosper

    Peace and long life.

A film which HARKS BACK to the '70s fab COLLECTION of science fiction films.

Pared down, straight up and with no frills. I just guess THE MARVEL GANG just won't GET IT.

    9/10

I must say, I'm surprised to hear people didn't like the ending because, for me, it was a slow burner that was in danger of drifting off, but the ending really paid it off and legitimized the movie that preceded it.

I was impressed by this. Highly recommended!

Weird to see Domhnall Gleeson and Oscar Isaac together before they hopefully break out in Episode VII. :)

    I enjoyed it, but
thought the ending might have been better had it happened when she got into the lift?

Yeah agreed, I thought this was
    a good end point
. I enjoyed it but felt it was very drawn out. I also felt the
security system was a bit stupid, you spend millions on this place yet don't put in a security system that's unique to the person (retina scans or something?)

Induction charging, it was stated in the film.

Basically all she had to do was be in proximity of of the charging point. My electric toothbrush charges by the same method

Did anyone else pick up a possible ode to Blade Runner with the soundtrack at the end when
Ava has locked Calem in the room or around then
    ?

It reminded me of the last scene/credits in Blade Runner

Around 3.08 on the clip above

Brilliant movie, but its one film in which I really hope they would ban bags of popcorn and bags of sweet from the screening. It's such a quiet film and you really needed to listen in carefully. But it doesn't help with all the rattling going on.

Anyway, I'm surprised many people didn't see the ending coming from a mile away but even I was shocked Garland went there
I had a feeling Ava was playing Caleb and Nathan off each other so they would start to not trust one another, but even I didn't think she would leave Caleb to die (well I assume he is) cause was he really such a bad guy. But you know it ain't going to be found seen as he's an orphan with no girlfriend

Oscar Issac was brilliant as Nathan, that dance scene alone is worth the price of admission. think this is the better film of his out this month I wasn't too crazy A Most Violent Year even though he's excellent in it. Gleeson is very good too and always seems to underplay things better then anyone and you actually feel for Caleb at the end. Alicia Vikander is great also as Ava and this is the best film out with her in January.

It is beautiful shot and it takes its time with telling its story, people going in expecting 28 days later with A.I's need not apply. This is a very stripped down three hander 70's style sc-fi paranoid style thriller. Sign me up for Garland's next directional effort.

Very strange that this seems to be out of all the cinemas already or on at off peak hours

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,533 ✭✭✭don ramo

was it just me, or was that the jurrasic park theme tune being played very slowly on piano as ava walked out of the house,

  • Registered Users Posts: 7,988 ✭✭✭constitutionus

i thought the same when yer man was coming down the stairs in the beginning.

dont think it is, but its a good touch if it was and i was happy to take the implication it was a modified version of it.

    :)

It's still getting 4 showings a day in Cineworld, which is good these days if you last 3 weeks if you ain't a blockbuster. It's got great reviews so its doing a lot better then I thought it would.

Just back from this. Very much enjoyed it. A more clever and engaging A.I. thriller than usual. Isaac and Gleeson are really great, particularly the former who is fast becoming one of my favourite actors. Bit of a slow burner but worth it.

I suppose if I was to pick holes then one issue I had was
Caleb seemed more appalled that Nathan was mistreating his robots than he did when he thought the maid was a human. Little odd.

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,101 ✭✭✭Technocentral

What happened to this? Thought it would be big blockbuster type popular, even on here its only got 2 pages whereas 50 shades has a dozen or so

I liked this a lot. Garland maintained a nicely clinical, critical distance throughout which felt wholly appropriate given the material. Was impressed by Isaac's performance too - the right mix between charisma and insanity ;)

If I had one issue, it was that the film was almost too keen to highlight its themes and philosophical ponderings. But a film trying to be too cerebral is hardly the worst criticism, and for the most part there was plenty of intriguing ideas while still having having an engaging, playful narrative.

Seems to have done quite poorly at the box office. About €180k for the first 2 weeks before dropping out of the top 10 according to the IFB. Amazing really considering how good a film it is and then you look at the likes of 50 Shades of Grey going stratospheric  There's no accounting for taste with Irish cinema goers :pac:
