Hi all,
Vanilla are planning an update to the site on April 24th (next Wednesday). It is a major PHP8 update which is expected to boost performance across the site. The site will be down from 7pm and it is expected to take about an hour to complete. We appreciate your patience during the update.

Hamilton to win Sports Personality?

    I made the assumption that Lewis Hamilton would be unbackable to win BBC Sports Personality of the Year.
    Then I looked at the prices on Powers and hes 13/8 behind 4/9 McIlroy.

    But I think hes in with a good shout.
    He won the Championship in 2008 but didn't win SPOTY, Chris Hoy won that year. I think Hamilton is a lot more likeable now than then, the 'people' have gotten to know him now, so to speak.
    Also, a negative for McIlroy is that he hit his peak in the summer whereas Hamilton is only a couple weeks ago, so still fresh in the minds of people.
    Not only that, only two Northern Irishmen has never won SPOTY before, so the trends are in Hamiltons favour.
    I don't think anyone else is a realistic contender.
    Ill be getting on at 13/8 anyway!

    You could be right about Hamilton.

    Looking at the list of winners only 2 golfers have ever won it as well
    1957 and 1989.
    Maybe there's something in it that golf fans aren't bothered ringing up
    and voting for things like SPOTY.

    He is 15/8 with Boyles or 2/1 Bet365 .

    McIlroy twice won against 155 of world's best.

    Hamilton won what was effectively a 2 horse race in a "sport" where it's just as much the car as the driver.

    Also which has more supporters, Golf or Motor racing?
    Would be surprised if McIlroy didn't win it as he has had an unbelievable
    season and seems to be well liked by the public.

    Looking deeper into the stats shows some very odd results.

    Like last year, Mo Farah won two World Championship gold medals, and wasn't in the Top 3??:eek: Tony McCoy finished ahead of him in third, and he just reached a career milestone rather than a particularly strong year.
    Justin Rose won the US Open last year and got 1.4% of the vote!
    Motor racing has given pervious 6 winners to Golfs 2.

    And heres another reason why it might tip in Hamiltons favour...
    back in '07 and '08, he finished runner up, when F1 coverage was on ITV.
    Maybe now its a BBC award for a BBC covered sport it may add on a few extra votes.
    I don't know... Im just trying to convince myself Im buying money :D

    That could be a great shout. The fact that McIlroy chose to play for Ireland rather than GB at the 2016 Olympics won't help him either win this one. Will throw a decent size bet on this as he is still 13/8

    I am giving up gambling.
    Backed McIlory at 4/5, 3/4, 4/6 today and sat back and watched McIlroy go 1.18/1.19 in running :mad::mad::mad:.
    I guess 2 Majors just ain't enough these days?
    Hamilton was 7.6/7.8 in running.
