I didn't think there were that many test channels left on each Mux.

There isn't, they're just blank carriers and won't become actual channels. Don't know the reason behind it but could be related to the future launch of UTVI and maybe Oireachtas TV?

I have a total of 36 TV channels and 20 radio channels that were scanned from Three Rock this evening on my Triax TSC 114 combi box.

All of the TV channels are unscrambled after the rescan.

Can someone tell me why is there the need for these additional services to be on Saorview even possibly for a short period. Saorview is only planning to officially launch one channel in the new year and another one being under discussion with 2rn.

The extra space will eventually be taken up with the launch of UTVi and possibly Oireachtas TV.

Firstly there is no need to rescan, except for fun. Most/all the channels are marked as hidden so on approved boxes they will not display during up down channel selections unless you press the exact digits (e.g. 1,4 for 14) , so they should not cause much alarm for people with approved boxes. They don't actually take up much space as there is not much moving video on them, so the quality of the existing channels should not be affected.

One of the channels I think is the old RTE1 or 2 signal, which is now a test card which will appear on peoples TVs who never rescanned ages ago. This is good and would help someone realise the TV is not broken, but that one of their channels is now a test card. This may cause them to rescan. Also test cards are a useful way of testing.

In reality what they might be doing is putting placeholders on certain channel numbers, which may help with rescanning at a later date. Currently the channel is flagged as hidden, but if they add the channel and then flag it as unhidden approved boxes may just start displaying the new channel without any need to rescan. Thus from day 1 the new channel will just "appear" on peoples TV. For this to happen they would have needed to have rescanned after the hidden channels first appeared. I am not sure if this is how it will work, but it could be the reason they have all these placeholders.

I am currently in a location with reception from Northern Ireland and the Republic. The placeholders also "reserve" the channel numbers, so after a rescan the Irish stations are in numbers 1-18 (including testcards) and the UK channels start from 19 upwards. Without the testcards BBC 1 would be number 10 and then move higher later. At least this allows the numbers 1-18 reserved for ROI channels. If I use the UP down on the remote BBC1 is directly above the current Saorview non hidden channels, and if one of the hidden ones suddenly became unhidden, it would magically appear in the middle, hopefully without the need to rescan.

People not rescanning/not knowing etc could be a big problem for any new TV station launching, and they would not have many viewers in the first couple of months.

I had to rescan my combi box because it didn't include the extra channels in my receiver's channel list. I would still have gotten onto the satellite channels instead if I didn't rescan them.

I don't know what is the full story here regarding these channels but the method in getting them may be different for people which may depend on the setup of their equipment into their TV sets at home. The difference on my receiver is that all of them are unhidden so they are there on my channel list at any time until they may go off air when UTVI is launched in January.

207 now active carrying RTE junior radio. All other test radio labels are blank and now says no service available. I did another rescan and can now get an extra 8 blank carriers on both mux1 and 2. So when I press the number keys I can go up as far as 50. 212 and 213 radio test are now blank.

    I did a re-scan this morning and found 73 channels from Three Rock (Ch 30 & 33)

Very strange as there's only 8 TV and 9 Radio channels on the proper EPG

The network names have been changed too. They're now 2RN 1 and 2RN 2.

Is the test of News Now on 21 perhaps because it could move there to keep it separate from the entertainment channels? I doubt it, seeing as Saorview is hardly ever going to be packed with channels to need categories, but it is an interesting thought.

Yes it looks a lot better alright, text is much sharper. I could never understand why Saorview chose such low resolutions for the SD channels. The bit rates were more than enough to cater for 'Full SD'.

704x576 averages about 300kpbs more than 544x576 I believe, when all the channels were on a single Mux there may not have been enough spare capacity for all channels to run at that resolution.

I see RTÉ One +1 on LCN15 was removed earlier today, before that there was a static caption displayed indicating it had its own stream and not sharing with RTÉjr.

I still think that at least for SD, 2RN are being a little conservative in looking to avoid artifacting by keeping the picture softer than what it really needs to be - the video bitrates used for TV3, TG4, 3E etc. are around the same ballpark as many 544x576 channels on satellite, even allowing for the former using MPEG4 compared to MPEG2 for the latter.

Maybe the NN test on LCN 21 is a resolution test to allow for a sharper SD resolution - a channel like News Now should not need consistently high bitrate overheads to allow for a lot of fast moving images.

Also, according to my receiver the 2RN SD streams are 528x576?

The RTE One + 1 I previously had at position 8 no longer has a name in the EPG. The other RTE One + 1 on Mux 2 does.

Also in the EPG the no name version has "Programmes start at 19.00' from 2am while the named version has 'No event information' from that time onwards.

Same here. The hidden RTE1+1 is on LCN 11, manually selected.

This could mean RTE1+1 is being bumped down to make way for three new services on 8, 9 and 10. Or, maybe it's being re-located to 11 to logically be the first number in the second block of 10. So, if there were to be an RTE2+1, it may appear on 12, TV3+1 on 13 and so on.

The likelihood of that, though, is another discussion!

The resolution on LCN11 appears to be higher than that on 8.

Test channel 21 has been labelled RTE NEWS NOW with EPG matching that of LCN 6. This can be viewed by using the number keys on your remote. Also test channels 9,10,16,17,18,19 and 20 are all showing test cards. Test channel 9 has audio for RNAG.
