Whatever opinions one might hold concerning whose at fault, it is pretty objectional stuff to be openly blamed, then partially identified world wide on YouTube without your knowledge or consent or right of reply.

You cannot expect a right to privacy in a public place, especially in the age of social media. He's going to find out that the hard way

I regularly cycle this route and passing that bus on the left when he should know that he's approaching a bus stop wasn't a smart thing to do.

Equally the driver knew there was a bus stop coming up and was alongside a cyclist so should have hung back.

Spot on, I feel sorry for the bus driver, he's just trying to do his job at the end of the day. He doesn't decide to go out and run over cyclists .
Everybody makes mistakes , I've made some ones myself that if some muppet had a camera on me I'd be in a bit of trouble too, that's before it's edited and put together in a way to portray me as basically a maniac deliberately trying to kill people!

The poor chap is probably stressed to the max now, for what?

I just remembered that I got a smack of a bus when cycling about twenty odd years ago. This thread brought it all back. Number 43 to swords hit me in the ass!

I think the term is "Visualantes"... maybe this person see's himself as a Vigilante with a camera?

Recording incidents like this which may or may not be breaches of the law and posting them up on social media...

Recording in a public place is not against the law, however the Bus driver in question may report the video to YouTube if he feels it violates his right to privacy... The poster however cannot be sued as he is a citizen recording in public...

The video makes it fairly obvious for what.

Every so often I think we all feel angry and shocked after being on the road and like to let loose with a good old rant. However, regardless of the actual incident, recording and broadcasting an incident in this manner is a little odd and unfair. I wouldn't do it.

It does look a bit like the bus is moving towards the cycle lane before the cyclist decides to zip up on the inside. When the video starts the front of the bus seems to be a foot away from the cycle lane, by the time the cyclist reaches the back of the bus (about 6 seconds in) the front is practically already in the lane.

Didn't sound like the driver was threatening the cyclist, more along the lines of a warning, that if he's going to do silly things, he's going to get himself killed.

And on rewatching the video, it looks like the driver might even have been forced to veer to the left because of the cyclist (red tshirt, shorts) passing the bus on the right hand side. Driver is in a bit of a no win situation, taking care to avoid the cyclist on the right, while some other cyclist decides to pass on the left.

When you poke a bit deeper you see the real story, fact is your man phelan looks for confrontation with other motorists.

He's behind a bus to the left, guess what busses do!? They stop at bus stops on the left!

This mastermind decides to take a fairly stupid line up the inside of a 16t bus. Now considering he's a member of MADmtb I'd imagine he's well clued into riding a bike without getting hurt.

IMO he took a line there to make the bus driver look like a maniac, he then sped up to argue with the driver and unfortunately the driver used words that were taken out of context. Decides because he's a self righteous little twat to edit the video and put it on YouTube along with loads of other videos about people who he considers to nearly kill him.

His webpage has a picture of two lads standing in a cycle track and he posts it online with #idiots.

He's a bollox that did nothing but create a massive mountain out of a tiny molehill, I've cycled in town for nearly 9 years busses move like that everyday, I just go around them, or if it's Baltic and windy use them as wind breakers.

This thread is starting to turn into just plain ranting/name calling. If the discussion is finished, I'll be closing this.

What are you waiting for? :)

Phelan seams to be on a one man crusade to rid Dublin of all bad drivers with his on-board camera and youtube account. I cycle and drive and there are good and bad on both sides - the amount of cyclists i see on mobiles is crazy - but no one seams to care - all road users should try to work together, rather than the one man jury of Mr. Phelan and his ongoing crusade against other road users.

I'm surprised the bus driver didn't just say sorry or kept his window shut especially as the cyclist had a camera on head and everything was being recorded. Nothing probably would've come of it.

I understand how the cyclist got angry as its easy enough in the heat of the moment. I've done it myself but I usually end up regretting it afterwards and am just thankful I'm still in one piece.

So it's boiled down to two points,

If this was a one off for the cyclist, boo the bus driver, terrible driving, rabble, rabble

But because he had a few vids, god love the poor bus driver, he must be terribly upset, let's exonerate him completely.

Ah, MADMTB.... you should join EPIC Liamo, they'll teach you how to ride *over* the bus.... ;)

I see at least one person each day using a mobile while driving. Usually it's 5-10, depending on how much I'm on the road.

I rarely see cyclists on their mobiles, and even if they were, it's not illegal, and not half as dangerous.

MOD VOICE : Oddly enough most people seem to be saying the same thing in different ways but still debating it as if their views are opposed. If anyone has anything novel to add, PM me and I will reopen it, for now we shall take a break.
