You probably have a Paul Stewart stuck in the back of a drawer too.

As long as it's not a Paul Konchesky!

Ever since I was a kid, I've never got a name or number on the back of a jersey (of course, back then there were no names on the jerseys!). I still don't do it; players come and go, even legends, the club is the constant...

Portugese paper Record now saying we're looking at Lazar Markovic. Marca said something similar last week:

Never seen the appeal of it.

    So back to basics...

Lambert signed, good start, not a moneyball signing but a common sense one. Nice to see!
For Lallana, let's hope we hold firm on the fee. If they want silly money, they can get it from Spuds, after they sell Lamela to us.
For Moreno, all signs point to it happening, so let's hope it does. But I was watching some highlights from the last 2 seasons, and we forgot how good Enrique is in attack. Was involved in so many goals, linked great with Coutinho and Suarez down the left side, and scored a couple himself. Would be good to get him fit and have some competition.

Why is Lambert not a moneyball signing?

    Wont have a re-sale value.

I don't think that has anything to do with moneyball.

To me he looks just like that type of signing, undervalued at 4m based on his stats the last 2 years and cost of comparative players in his position

    Agree to disagree

Actually, maybe it is. The net cost of him over 2 seasons will be £4M + wages, probably less than most players would cost to perform over a similar period. So when you subtract the extra fee up front, and offset that against the lack of sell-on value, it all comes down to his contributions...

Yeah your right on that front but I think part of 'money ball' is increasing their value. Might be wrong...havent given it a lot of thought!

Quckly weigh in on Lambert, its a good piece if business at 4 million. Gives you a plan B. Just don't see how he will fit in the starting 11. A sub option for sure.

Not really on increasing the value - it started in baseball where there are no transfer fees. But there is certainly a view with FSG that we should buy young and look to develop instead of buying established stars (Ilori, Alberto, Yesil, Borini, Coutinho). Sakho was a comprimise - young but already established.
But Lambert is something they have never done...

Moneyball or no Moneyball Lambert makes more sense than splashing 8m or so on Aspas.

A very solid 3rd striker who is happy to sign knowing his chances could be limited enough.

    Suarez
    Sturridge
    Lambert
    Borini
    Sterling
    Coutinho

Nice collection of attackers at the club

I think it's being mixed up with FSG, I would say that he's not a typical FSG-type signing as their track record shows a lot of what you mean: signing young underrated players and increasing their value. But moneyball is about sporting success with limited resources, not profitability. Using stats to bridge the gap to the teams with greater economic resources. Oftentimes the most undervalued players are the older veterans or long-term injured players

I am sure they were schooled on the impact of the likes of McAllister, Sheringham, Pirlo, Van Der Sar....

He had a very good season with Fiorentina.

He's clearly got talent. Bad injuries and walking into an absolute ****show meant it was always going to be tough for him here.

He came on after 15 mins when Montolivo got injured, then walked off injured after about 10 mins on the pitch. He'd touched the ball about 3 times. Complete sicknote.

I wouldn't say the signing of Kolo Toure was a whole pile different from the Lambert signing.

Not massively different, but it was more of a replacement for Carra, on a free - experience in and experience out. But yes, I take the point.

    NO NO NO NO NO.

Never mind the last season, where he was injured and barely got a sniff.
Look at the player that was at Roma, when he was only 20 years old.
    15 goals in 33 Serie A games as a winger/CAM.

    Lambert is an excellent signing.

Your biggest issue for next season is your lack of depth.

The 2013/2014 season was easier in that you'd no European football and could focus on the league.

Lambert will be perfect for Champions League dead rubbers, "easy" league games post Champions League, injury scenarios and Mickey Mouse cup games.

    An astute piece of business.

In July last year the club signed a 32 year old defender : Kolo Toure

Moneyball isn't all about signing unestablished players, it's about finding value. Experienced players on small contracts are good value especially when they are proven performers at the required level.

And if a club has the power to do that then the player should have every right to look for a way out of their contract when they want. End of story.

If that's what you think you clearly don't know much about contracts TT. By paying a player the contracted amount each week the club is fulfilling its contracted obligations, full stop, where and when they ask him to play is entirely their discretion. Clubs would be mad to allow clauses in their contracts which allowed a player to subplot walk away if they weren't being played as often as they like or the position they like etc.

Contracts are a two way street TT, there are plenty of examples of players signing big long term contracts then (for whatever reason) losing their form e.g. David Bentley, Joe Cole etc but the club can't just walk away from them can it???
