Just regarding Lallana playing deeper, I still don't see him filling the role of orthodox CM and he pretty much never plays this role any time I have seen him.

What I mean by this is if you look at our diamond midfield of stevie, henderson, coutinho and sterling, it is the two more attacking roles that he can play in, I don't see him in the more orthodox role that henderson occupies and could never imagine him partnering Coutinho in the middle 2 of that diamond.

I would not see him playing the role of an orthodox CM if he comes to Liverpool mainly because we rarely have had Henderson or Allen play that role in the season just gone.

Henderson usually starts on the right of a slightly advanced CM pairing and he covers the right outside channel, and of late Allen has been in the left CM slot and covers the left outside channel. Both are expected to track back, and both are expected to play a big part in harrying when we do not have the ball. Lallan currenty does that sort of harrying for Southampton, he does the same sort of chasing back, and he gets to cover a flank when Southampton do not have the ball. But what he offers of both Allen and Henderson is goals and also the ability to create and assist in goals.

Just had a noodle through a couple of the stat sites, and in the last twelve games alone Lallana has started games in the Wide left forward role, the wide right forward role, CAM, CM, LM and RM. During that time Southampton used 433, 451, 4231, and 41211. The one thing that stayed coinstant for Lallana despite starting in diufferent roles, was the distance he covered, the amount of tackles/interceptions he attempted, and the amount of forward runs. That suggests that he is a very proactive player with and without the ball, and that sounds a very good match for our current team.

Spotted a vid that Mostar from EST1892 put up of Lallana playing aginst us and I think it illustrates what Lallana would bring. The video is basically every touch he had of the ball during the game and it does a good job of showing just how much ground he covers and also of showing how effective he is at winning the ball.

He pops up everywhere on the pitch. RW, LW, RB, LB, AM, and CM.

Now if you look at other vids of Lallana the same can be seen game after game. Him motoring around the pitch getting tackles in, starting attacks with passes, starting attacks by running with the ball, intercepting passes and so on.

The guy will never be an orthodox CM in the old fashioned sense, but his play suggests that he has all the tools to excel when there is a dedicated DM or Deep lying playmaker behind him as well as the further back up of another midfielder alongside him in the centre.

The way we play he would nearly always have another CM beside him as well as a DM behind him, so his energy and talent could be exploited to the full imo.

Good observation on Alberto. Happy enough with that squad, there's the guts of a passable first team there. Hopefully Teixeira gets game time, he will be good to watch.

I'm hoping for a really tough group tbh, no point in getting back in the big time and then praying for an easy group.

Same here, really looking for a Group of Death!
After so many years out of the competition, want as many big games as possible.

I'd like one big team and then the worst second seed and for us to get through the group.

I am not exactly begging for a hard one (ooh er missus!)

But I would rather someone like Ajax or Fenerbache or Napoli, a real team who present a challenge, than someone who scraped in as winners in Latvia or Norway...

    I want

    Man City
    Chelsea
    Arsenal

    but that can't happen apparently.

Take this with a barrel of carbolic but I've just seen something on a City message board which says Micah Richards is heading our way and that's from the horses mouth.

Random question: as things stand now, would you take a group stage knock-out in the Cl and a top 4 finish, or a qf/sf run in the CL and finish 5th?

4th! No point getting one/two steps further and playing in the EL the following season!

I'd love to have United but they finished 7th and thus missed out on European qualification.

Of those options, I'd take the group stage knock-out in the CL and a top 4 finish every time

4th, we have to qualify again in 15/16. The money for the clubs involved doubles that season, if we aren't in it then we are left behind for years.

Looking back at the transfers you'd have to say that Alberto & Aspas really didn't come off. Borini is a much more solid player, Aspas tried but he looked a fish out of water in terms of his ability to link in with our system. Could we have got by with a youth team player and waited for Borini to come back? Possibly.

Alberto looked pretty lead footed, definitely looked off the pace. Again, hard to understand the signing.

I'd be glad to see these 2 move on (possibly on loan with salaries being paid by the other club) and Borini come back, proven penalty specialist. Might be time to look at Toure to, he really was a liability after his early promising performances, not terribly gone on Cissohko either but he's worth holding onto.

We should send someone to Brasil to kidnap Suarez after the tournament finishes, we should "neutralise" his agent and only allow Luis out of his box to eat meat and sharpen his teeth. Anyone from real madrid within 20m of him should possibly be given harsh treatment too. If a few lads have to go away for a few years to keep Suarez, so be it.

Will be happy with that if true. Quality player.

    Re: Alberto and Aspas
Alberto was definitely off the pace, but in terms of positioning and intelligence he has the qualities to fit in. If he could get used to the pace of the game a bit better he could certainly be retained as a useful squad player.

Aspas showed a decent amount of promise in the first few games when Suarez was banned. I've always felt if he had gotten a goal or two his season would have been a lot better. There were a few occasions where Sturridge could have put it on a plate for him but didn't.
He still wouldn't have gotten a major amount of playing time, but he could have been used more if he got that wee confidence boost early on.

Honestly....play the 6 group games... take the money ..run

Concentrate on the PL, that is the No1 priority.

Alberto doesn't seem to have the work rate required.

Anyone who plays higher than the DM needs to the work rate and legs to press high up and get back to defend. Allen, Henderson, Sterling, Coutinho do it very well.

I'd have similar reservations about Suso. Does he have the legs to get up and down the pitch.

Texeira seems to suit the system a bit better from the bits I've seen of him.
