There is a story from one of the papers http://www.irishexaminer.com/sport/soccer/whelan-reds-facing-long-wait-268399.html with Ronnie Whelan talking about Liverpool's chances of winning the league and in it he says,

“Liverpool are still playing catch-up on all the top teams, the Citys and the Chelseas. It is going to take years to get the players in and build the team because we have fallen behind over the last ten years, more and more."

“There’s a lot of building still to be done and I don’t think it can be done in a year.”

Now, I always liked Whelan when he played for us but I don't think his comments really help us that much. He may have a point but does he have to be a negative neddy? Jeez Ronnie, we finished 2nd place and played some breathtaking football, scoring goals galore. How about some praise or a pat on the back at least?

Maybe I'm still all glowy from LFC's achievements this season and haven't fully started thinking about next year yet, but I think it's bad enough that opposing fans and otherwise will happily tell us that we'll never win the Premier League. We don't need one of our own former players telling us the same thing!

There's just something about that story, makes me disappointed with Ronnie Whelan. What do the rest of ye think?

I think he comes across as a twat every time he speaks about Liverpool

Had Liverpool won the league, Ronnie would still have found a way to put a negative spin on it.

    He's right though.

When you factor in the transfer embargo and the extra 594 games we'll have to play next season i doubt we'll have a chance at winning anything.

Whelan always was and still is a United fan, a very bitter individual when he's talking about Liverpool, he's even worse than Lawrenson.

Considering we only got second - according to Ronnie we need to rebuild the team.

Okay then....how many do we ship out ?

    Ronnie Whelan

Great player. Poor pundit. Typical living in the past mentality.

    Example...

“But you are also looking to your Skrtels and your Aggers and you don’t see them on the pitch grabbing people like Graeme Souness would have done in his day or a Kenny Dalglish or a Phil Neal"

Great insight. His negativity is unreal

    Example..

“I would bet that Daniel Sturridge will never score 21 league goals again”

He comes across very bitter. I remember him doing lots of interviews slating Rafa, and wanting him out of the job and lost all respect for him after that. Talks some bollox does Ronnie.

First shot I've seen of full away kit on players.

    I think it looks great.

Guardian running a piece on Lallana - Rodgers wants to get the main deals done early doors and it looks like the Soton play will have to make it clear he wants to leave

    Two things from that article
I don't want to put a figure on how many but I would rather have one or two absolute top players than seven that might not help us," said the Liverpool manager. "It's about the quality"

Delighted to read that it's about improvement and just numbers
The boyhood Evertonian suggested this week that he was undecided over his future but he is understood to favour a move to Anfield over other interested parties, including Manchester United.

Bitter child in me likes to see that. Two rivals in one go. Shows how the power of being in the Champion's League will benefit us and weaken our rivals. Even though their supporters think that we won't strengthen in the summer and Utd will buy everyone.

Yeah he seems to be a bitter man alright. I'm kinda sorry I put the link up now but I think true Liverpool fans will know he's talking sh!te.

20 mil doesn't buy you much anymore does it?

Lallana would have went for ~7 mil last summer before the one great season in the top flight he had. Is this a risk we need to take for this kind of money? I know every transfer is a risk and could work out great but we've been here before, so maybe I'm just being a pessimist.

Did we OPEN the bidding at 20m for Lallana? What will the final bill be? The whole thing just seems mad to me.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,649 ✭✭✭Luap

Can't see us buying a new centre half tbh. Rodgers will get the defense sorted for the next campaign.

Pity Sakho is on the world cup squad, himself and Skrtel could of worked on their partnership. :P

25 million for lallana seems excessive in my opinion.

Would much rather try and nab Javi martinez from Bayern for 30 and go again for konoplyanka at 15-18 million.

It seems every week Bayern are selling either one of Kroos, Goetze, Martinez, Schweiny.

If Martinez is available we should try our hardest to get him. Can play Defensive mid or a bit further foward and can also cover CB.

If the rumours are true and we have 70 million to spend, Id go with three top quality straight in to the first 11 and then have the likes of Borini, Suso and possibly Wisdom as back up.

EDIT: Im hating the new jerseys for next season. That yellow one looks way to baggy.

Ah Jesus we aren't Man U or Spurs. A couple of first team additions and some squad players and there is no reason we can't compete on all fronts. I read that Whelan article as well, had to stop half way through. Came back and finished it for the sake, doom and gloom central.

He was really good before that too. Wouldn't have gone for under 12-15m.

I like the yellow kit but it could do with a bit more Suarez.;) Ah no I'm sure he'll be with us for the start of the new season.

Glad to see those comments from Rodgers yesterday about getting in quality.

He's obviously after guys that will slot right into the first XI and not just hopeful punts.

Do you think so? His first season in the EPL i remember him being just ok. Granted I didn't see much of Southampton but he never jumped out as a stand out player to me. I never watched him in the Championship but again he wasn't tearing it up or anything. Before last season if someone had said lets spend 12-15m on Lallana I'd have been shocked being honest.

Lallana had a very good season last year.

Joe Cole released by West Ham. Anyone?

    As in 2012/2013

I just cant agree, maybe because I'm not easily impressed I suppose. How would you rate Henderson in 2012/2013. I would have said he had a decent enough season showing signs of improvement. Yet he was at least on par with Lallana in terms of goals and chances created in 2012/2013. How would you assess Jonjo Shelvey last season for Swansea? A ~5mil signing? He scored and created more than Lallana in his first season, had a better pass completion rate (and passes) also and thats him settling into a new team.

Now I'm not suggesting Shelvey is better, and obviously its not all about chances created etc, i'm just saying, if your comparing seasons 2013/14 is easily his best season by miles. His first season cannot be described as "very good" in my mind.

To think i was excited when he signed for us first :( signings like Cole Downing Carroll and Adam have destroyed my confidence in buying British "premiership proven" players

Adam's not that bad! I mean I'm not looking to have him back, but he did more than Cole and Downing put together.

See, that's where the stats lie to you. They can't tell you about the character of the player, their flexibility, how they stick to the coaches plan, how they lead other players. Shelvey is a great example of stats doing someone a big favour.

I say stats last night PROVING that Ben Davies had a better season than Shaw, using 4/5 carefully selected stats. But anyone with eyes will tell you that Shaw was far more impressive in his overall performances...

I agree completely, its hard to compare players without using stats though. And i compared their attacking stats, not anything obscure. As i said its obvious that Lallana is a better player, but worth 4+ times Shelvey went for I'm not sure i can agree. I already said Lallana was excellent last season but not overly impressed with him the season before. 12 m player before last season he certainly was not.

To be fair, thats not the standard a player should be judged against :P

Spurs will send him back to Italy before ever considering selling him to us.

But who in Italy has money to spend? They are a selling league now, they have about 1/2 big signings every window for the WHOLE of Serie A. Napoli blew a load last summer, but only after selling Cavani.

I agree they wouldn't sell to us though. I expect him to try and stay fit over the summer and hope to impress a new manager...
