Gary Medel imo. Long season coming up. Would be a very good option. Would be reasonably priced.

Do you guys think we have a realistic chance of landing Javi Martinez?

If there is he should be the No1 transfer target for the summer

I suspect that we don't have a chance to be honest

Well a lot of the rumours seem to be suggesting that our big signing this summer is going to be a player playing in the Bundesliga.

Because I like the sound of those rumours, I am going to let them give me hope, false or otherwise, with regards to the two namers being banded about :D

Sakho has shown enough, both at Liverpool and at PSG, for me to be quite excited about our 23 year old, French International, new player in a foreign team whereby he is only learning the language, and former PSG captain, center back.

Replacing him, or writing him off already is bizarre, to say the least.

I don't think people are saying we must replace him or are writing him off entirely, what they are saying is that based on this season, his big fee and reputation, he has been pretty disappointing and CB appears to be an area we should be hoping to improve on.

    What i find "bizarre" is;

    1) People who are seemingly averse to him getting any criticism
    2) An actual conversation being had about him being next club captain

Kess can drop into conversation how many times he has seen him live etc etc all he wants, but the reality of the situation is that when he plays we look considerably worse at the back. This is backed up by the number of clean sheets we keep in games he plays. Considering he was bought for pretty huge money for a CB, it's fair to expect more.

Caulker and Medel for £10M the pair? That would do...

Who is the other name? Hard to keep up with rumours this time of year

Beats going back for Masch and is probably an improvement on Lucas right now. Yeah, would be happy to have him.
Don't see where Medel would fit in to be honest. If Gerrard is going to play as the deepest lying midfielder, then Medel either plays centre back or in a more advanced midfield role. Neither of which strikes me as his preferred position.

So Kess, who is your choice to partner him next season, assuming it's a new player?

    Anyone but Skrtel :o

Rumour is Caulker has a £4m release clause if Cardiff were relegated, I'd assume Medel would have something similar

Its not so much being averse to criticism him, its tempering that criticism because of the circumstances I outlined. If he performs next season as he has done this, then by all means ask the questions and demand the answers, but for now I'm content with what he showed and optimistic for how he can improve.

A lot of his 'issues' are rectifiable, just as a lot of his strengths can't be taught.

We need squad depth. He doesn't have to start every game, nor does/will a soon to be 34 year old Gerrard.

So what your saying is we will sign Kroos at left back?

Dream signing with be someone like Mat Hummels. Realistically we should not be able to get him, but then again I think I said something similar about Sakho a few years back.

Other names that I would love to see us linked with, (some realistic, some not so much) would be the likes of Mangala, Varane, and Matip.

Funnily enough I would be one who would not be against the purchase of Caulker, as long as it was as a third choice CB.

To be fair it would difficult for him to have developed a solid partnership in such a small sample of games

I think rightly or wrongly, we all judge players after as little as half a season, it's just human nature. I guess I just don't see the potential in him forming a solid centre back partnership over the next 5 years say.

Let's hope I'm resoundingly proven wrong.

↑ This is exactly what I feel (That's the last thing I'll say on Sakho because I'm boring myself now)

If he's 3rd choice, assuming we keep Agger and lose Skrtel? What about Ilori, and Coates? Loan and sell?

It's amazing how simplistic some people are being when it comes to Sakho, they are taking two unrelated things, our goals conceded and his awkward gait and ascribing cause and effect because he runs funny.

Funny I remember us laughing at Fergie's comments about Hendo gait yet we are taking Sakho's seriously???

Telegraph now saying we want Shaw and Konoplyanka.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 88,968 ✭✭✭✭mike65

Budget estimate - not too much.

OUT - Reina, Johnson, Aspas, Agger, Kelly (plus loan players)

BACK - Suso, Borini, Ilori, Wisdom (though case can be made to keep him at Derby if they win promotion)

Other loans - Robinson sell, Coady sell, McLaughlin another loan, Ibe another loan, Coates see how he does at World Cup and pre-season then decide, Ngoo sell, Sololik sell/release

IN - Lallana (ideal for across the line behind striker/s), Griezmann type (could be him, Konoplyanka, Tello but hopefully not the latter), Nathaniel Clyne, Soton wouldn't like it but I would. Javier Mascherano* - I doubt Liverpool are going to be able to land a Fernando Reges, Javi Martinez level player but Masch could still be a very good option if not over-priced.

*Gary Medal as just mentioned would be interesting and probably cheaper alternative

Every time I've seen Medel playing, he has Red Card written all over him. Tough git, but goes looking for trouble.
I think that he has already signed for someone else anyhow.

No room for Isco or Arbeloa in the Spanish WC squad. Surprised at that.

The majority of people mentioning his awkward running style are those defending him?

People keep saying that the only reason people are worried about him is because he runs funny.... I'm more concerned by the shambles our defence tends to be when he plays.

If we are linked again with Konoplyanka this summer I'll have to learn how to pronounce his name.

Actually Alan, I think you will find that I did respond to the question that you asked directly of me and I also gave reasons as to why I think he has done fine during the season just gone.

I mentioned that I see him live simply because I am a regular match goer and as such would have my views on a player influenced as much by off the ball play as I do by on the ball play.

So you asked for an opinion from me on the player, I gave you my opinion and also explained what influenced my opinion, and I see no attempt in return from you to actually have any sort of conversation in which you put across your pov as to why he has had a "very disappointing" season.

Maybe you could tell me as to what exactly, in your opinion of course, he did wrong so often in his 19 games as a left back, part of a CB trio, and part of a CB duo that made him such a disappointing player in your eyes. He must have been really poor in your eyes for the majority of his 19 games for you to describe him as being "very disappointing".

Am actually curious as to what you think about him as a player, because it seems like you have made up your mind on him already.

    .

There are lots of silent consonants in there, it's actually pronounced 'Smith'

Don't think we can be too harsh on Sahko to be fair. He was out injured for long periods and then came back into the side when it was getting to the business end of the season - he did well enough. Really enjoyed his battle against Ba for the Chelsea game, the two of them gave it socks each - this fills me with an expectation that he can handle himself in games where we've often come unstuck - the Stokes/Villas of this world. But of course, he looks a little uneasy when asked to play the ball around like he is in the Barcelona side. Not more so as Skrtel but obviously Agger makes em both look awkward.

As a defence we need to concede that BR doesn't exactly set them up for success and this is evident the amount of times we have a winger running at our fullbacks with nobody within an arses roar of them - i.e someone to protect them. Ala Dirk Kuyt you might say. When was the last time Chelsea were left so vulnerable at the back? This is my point i guess. Nobody ever realised Rio ferdinand and Vidic were human until someone actually got at them - Torres - and then all of a sudden they didn't seem so impervious as they once were.

Liverpool play such an expansive attacking game that we do not YET see the defencive side as aggressively - and of course we are not Barcelona holding the ball under pressure for 70 mins of the game.

Sahko looks good for the future and needs to be judged this time next season. What we need is to find a suitable partner for him and fullbacks that can cover as well as they attack.

Some one said it already its too early to judge sakho. he needs to be given time to settle has the potential to be very good when he gains a bit more confidence playing in the pl.

We need a new CB to partner Sakho on the right hand side. Skrtel isn't good enough, despite his goals.

Coates should be sold imho. He does not look like he has a chance at making it at Liverpool.

Ilori I would like to see get another season or half season out on loan to a british club, similar to what Wisdom got at Derby.
