Some decent players listed there BUT could we not have attracted them even without the Champions League? I'm hoping we can attract the types of players Madrid, Barca, City and Juve attract. I know they have more pulling power due to our policy of keeping wages down but we need to be signing, or at least chasing, players like Muller, Shaqiri, Javi Martinez, Alonso, Isco and so on

Muller will not be joining Liverpool. I think we need to keep a lid on our expectation here, we are not all of a sudden as big a draw as City or Barca (we can't compete in terms of resources, near guaranteed title run ins and favourites to progress in Europe).

We've overachieved gloriously, but let's keep our hats on.

I should have bolded the word hope :o

Hopefully the Anfield factor on a Tuesday/Wednesday night will draw them in and Xabi and other ex Liverpool players might put in a good word ;)

(No Owen, we don't want Cleverly and Young..) :pac:

One season back in the CL isn't going to give us the key to the established world class players again, wages will be a huge stumbling block.
I think we are at the level where signing Mkhitaryan or Willian would be a lot easier than before.

Ah sure look why dont we just bid for Carlton Cole, Cattermole, Ashley Williams, sure we're only Lil Liverpool FC. ;)

I thought we already signed Messi anyway so that's LB sorted.

    Javi Martinez

No no. No way I'm not biting. The disappointment if we didn't land him would be too much.

If ever there was a player that this squad is screaming out for Javi Martinez is it.

He's no right foot, no salmon like leap, and he's not great at FIFA. Can't see him dislodging a fit again Enrique, really.

Let's remember something - there are a lot of good players around, and only so many teams with the money or attraction levels to sign for. If there are 20 top drawer attacking players available this summer, we MUST be in with a shout of a good proportion of them.

We already have some great players that they will play with, a young improving squad, able to pay top wages, legendary worldwide support, great history.

So tell me - why would Muller NOT join us? You are assuming City and Barca would be in for him. Then what about Kroos, Shaqiri, Gundogan, Rakitic, Benzema, Matuidi, Khedira, Jackson Martinez, Javi Martinez...surely some of them would like to earn top dollar playing for a legendary team?

Yeah he would be perfect. Especially as the way Gerrard was talking yesterday he might only have another year maybe two left in him.

Javi Martinez would blow a bloody big gaping hole in our defensive midfield problems in one foul swoop.

Both with Gerrard on the pitch, and also without Gerrard on the pitch.

Throw the kitchen sink at Bayern and I'm hoping Peps recent good comments about LFC could help us if push came to shove and he, and his current club are to part ways.

Matuidi would have been ideal but didn't he sign a contract lately? Rakitic is on his way to Madrid I think to compete with Isco for a spot on the bench.

With the new FA regulations we mightn't have as much to spend as people think.

What about the new TV deal? The whole point of the restrictions (£4 Million increase in the wage bill this year) is so clubs don't spend it all on high wages.

New sponsorship deals will help but it's hard to know by how much. With Reina and possibly Johnson going, that'll help.

You don't care about finances and the accounts? Yeah, well sometimes parents have to tell the children that Santa can't get everything, so tough. :P

Because we won't be paying top dollar. We won't be competing with City, United or Chelsea on the wages front, which sadly is the most important factor for many players.

Would anyone else love to see us sign ashley cole on a 2/3year contract? Seems like no one wants him anymore but he definitely has a couple more good seasons left in him and he is an experienced winner, would definitely add to the squad

I think he would be a good signing a definite improvement on what we have. Wages and length of the contract would be an issue Id imagine

He would solve so many problems at once it would be amazing. It would put Rodgers in a tasty situation re: Gerrard though, surely?

I'd love to see Rodgers go gung-ho for Coentrao. I think he'd be a very classy player for LFC and would immediately make a difference in a hugely weak area.
I'm not convinced that defensively Flanagan is the answer on either side of the pitch tbh, but has proved that he is definitely adequate back-up.

£50,000 a week + a two year contract with an option to extend if he plays X amount of games in the 2nd season wouldn't be bad for a 33/34 year old. He keeps himself fit and has a ton of experience. If we got 20 games a season out of him as a squad/cup player and cover for the #1 LB it wouldn't be a bad investment in wages would it?

Problem is there's probably a Japanese or American club who'd be prepared to give him £75,000 a week on a three year contract. It really depends on whether he wants to go see a bit of the world/take it easy or whether he wants to keep playing at the highest level.

Eh, if Javi Martinez signs, Gerrard will be finding an alternative role for himself in the squad, or Rodgers will be changing formation, again.

Some other stuff from opta joe

Liverpool's PL record total of 59 first half goals was more than 14 PL clubs managed in total this season

Liverpool (89) made the fewest substitutions in the PL this season

Martin Skrtel scored the most goals against the top 4 in the 2013-14 PL - Liverpool (4), Arsenal (2), City (1), Chelsea (1)

Seven teams (inc Tottenham, Chelsea & Liverpool) took more long throws than Stoke this season

Liverpool are the first team since Tottenham in 1962-63 to score 100+ goals and concede 50+ goals in the same season

    The joint-highest Goal/Assist combinations in the 2013/14 were Suarez/Sturridge and Suarez/Sterling.

Def no to coentrao for me, too much in wages

Flanno on the standby has literally brought a smile to my face...I'm made up for the lad...many wrote him off after he faded away from the first stint, and while he's a long way to go, fair fecks to him for his year!

Some people are going to need talking down from the dangerously high ledge of expectation they are perched on.

Are you going to pay his wages? Thats a weird argument you're putting forward for not signing an excellent attacking left back who would slot in perfectly with us.

Some people seriously detached from economic reality. We have got guaranteed Champs League, I guess we net an extra 50 to 60m. Unless I am wrong we operated at a loss of around 50m less year, an obvious improvement from the dark days of 200m.

Whether you understand it, accept it or want to confront it part of Liverpool's priorities are the ongoing stabilisation of finances. This does not include doing batshyt crazy things like offering a 33 yr old who missed the England world cup squad a 3 yr contract, nor does it mean we can spend upwards of 100m this summer...just because it would please the fantasy football fans.

We are not Chelsea, City, Arsenal or United,...or even Spurs, in our spending ability. Players do care about being in with a shout of the league and playing in champs league but they sadly care more about big bucketloads of money and 60k+ seater stadiums and one great season does not take us there.

We are still rebuilding after Sounness, Hodgson, the Moores selling us, those 2 fckin Texan bell ends and Rafa leaving, years of underinvestment and missing the boat with the modernisation of the football business.

Sorry if that's not happy clappy enough, but it's reality and as fans we should be immensely proud of the rebuilding job that has gone on and we should be backing a sensible transfer policy whilst keeping our foot on the gas with developing the infrastructure and business side of the club.

You'll be sorely disappointed post transfer window (just like this winter eh?) if you are hoping for Muller, Martinez and the ghost of Eusebio to emerge from the other side of the transfer window. I don't want us to risk the clubs future on a few big names, I want us to build and keep progressing, long term job, still a long way to go.

Ha! Heres a good one from reddit

Martin Skrtel is the only player to have scored against all top 4 teams in BPL this season. 1 vs City/Chelsea, 2 vs Arsenal & 4 vs Liverpool

Well said, its going to be very a tough window in reality because we will be looking for quality players for mid levels prices. Abit gutted to see Shaw going to United already. 27M is alot but its a great investment in a player who at 18 is already one of the most promising Fb's in Europe. United make 4-5 signings of that quality and prices and they will be serious contenders for top 4 and beyond again next season no doubt.

In the aftermath of the league im stunned really by what liverpool achieved this season. Rodgers had to endure missed target after missed target and as a result we ended up with the weakest bench ive seen us have in a long time. How we pushed chelsea and city to the end with the money they spentand finished 5 places ahead of united is truly a monumental achievement.

I worry however though that if we have another poor window with dragged out transfers it could be very hard to repeat last season. I rather have shaw for 27m to be honest than Lallana for 22m being touted.

I'd prefer the club found the next Seamus Coleman for 60k!

The money for Shaw is idiocy - the guy can only play in one position. That's Real Madrid thinking. Lallana can be played across the line behind the striker/s and swap with Sterling/Coutinho/Suarez/Sturridge in various formations as required.
