Sir Alex Ferguson to take up 'long-term teaching position' at Harvard
    • Former Manchester United manager recruited for new role
    • Lecturing in 'The Business of Entertainment, Media and Sports'

The former Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has agreed to take up a "long-term teaching position" in executive education at Harvard.

The 72-year-old, who left his post as manager at Old Trafford last summer after 26 years in charge, will lecture in the Ivy League University's new programme entitled 'The Business of Entertainment, Media and Sports', starting in May. It comes less than seven months after Ferguson's blueprint for managerial success was included in the October edition of Harvard Business Review.

"I'm delighted to have the opportunity and privilege to contribute to such a respected centre of excellence," Ferguson said.

"The time I have already spent at Harvard has been a stimulating experience and I look forward to developing my relationship and activities with the students, faculty and friends of the Harvard Business School community."

Ferguson conducted a series of interviews with the Harvard Business School professor Anita Elberse in 2012, outlining what he believed to be the eight key elements of his old job including "Match the method to the moment" and "Rely on the power of observation".

"We look forward to welcoming Sir Alex Ferguson on the HBS campus to share his remarkable leadership journey, and contribute to our Executive Education participants' ability to make a profound difference in the world," Elberse said.

The programme on The Business of Entertainment, Media and Sports will take place from 7-10 May. Manchester United are due to face Hull City in their last game of the season at Old Trafford on 6 May.

Maybe just maybe I might agree that If a specific team were to set up a tactically formation around him as a striker then it would get the best out of him but I don't see it happening, especially not at Man Utd

I completely disagree with the notion that teams would have to specifically setup to accommodate him. United have never done that. He has always scored goals, without some special setup. He's always scored goals because his movement is fantastic. And that is largely without building any continuity because he rarely has a consistent run of games. He's done remarkably well for the limited playing time he has had.

Can you specifically detail what you really mean by "setup a tactical formation around him" to get the best out of him? That's a bit of a fluffy statement. I don't know what it really translates to.

It's a bit like a project manager walking in and saying "we need to be more flexible", without giving a single concrete example of what that actually means in terms of day to day tasks, etc.

RVP to go back to Arsenal? I have to say, great and all as he was for us last season, he is affecting the setup and fluidity of the team for me.

To accommodate him we move Rooney out of his best position, Mata or Kagawa out of theirs. I would be sorry to see him go but with Rooney being younger and more likely to stay long term I would not blame the player or the club if he left.

If we sold Nani & Chicharito, given their ages and the unique qualities they both bring to the squad, I'd be completely gutted. Easily two of my three favourite players at the club, along with De Gea.

If they leave, we'll have another Forlan situation where they go elsewhere, play week in, week out, under a manager that trusts them and they'll do exceptionally well.

Agree with Chicharito, but Nani looks like he'll always be an erratic bastard.Still has something to offer, with so many vets and players in general on their way out the door soon he might be worth keeping for now.The new contract would seem to signify that's going to happen too.

just worked out if Anderson, vidic, evra, young, giggs and ferdinand were gone its roughly (based off online wages) it would remove £583000 a week

RVP will be 31 when next season comes around. He's one of the best strikers in the world and a brilliant footballer, but I think his job at Utd is done.Ferguson brought him in to ensure success in his final season imo,I wouldn't be surprised if he had planned to retire after winning the league the year before only for City to spoil the party.
It's a hard decision but selling RVP would signal thaT Kagawa and Hernandez are valued. These two are just about to come into the peaks of their careers, and I think they could both become very important players for Utd.But it seems at this point selling RVP is necessary to keep them at the club.

While i love him, 15m for a forth choice striker who has barely played for a year would not be a bargain....
yeah it'd be a bargain for United alright
not a hope in hell of securing that sort of fee for the mexican
altho in a years time, on the back of a season of football, that may well be his valuation

Maybe you are both focusing on what you think United will be able to sell him for, rather than what they should be selling him for, which was my point.

Given his quality and the state of the current market he is easily worth £20m, and that is on the low side. If the club have gotten themselves into a situation where they are struggling to sell him for that amount (because of having him near the end of his contract; needing to get him off the wage bill or just being unable to instigate a bidding war) then that is just poor management. Poor management from everybody in this case, not just Moyes.

If Hernandez ends up going for 15m (and I'm not saying that he will, I can fully believe that the club will continue to make a bollocks of buying and selling players) then the buying club will have gotten themselves a high quality striker for far less than the going rate. That is the definition of good value.

Just to clarify I'm not knocking Hernadez in above post but think he will always be a bit part player at UTD, but I agree a handy one as a super-sub where he has proven to be the most effective in this role. When he starts - not so good.

You are vastly underrating his qualiy imo. He is easily good enough to be starting for a top PL club.

I don't see how getting rid of RVP would be good

Hernandez as a finisher would improve any BPL side at the moment except maybe liverpool

It might be better for the team balance as a whole. Currently the only way to play Rooney and RVP in the same team is to move Rooney to the No.10 position where we already have 2 players who are far better than him there. We could rotate them but I doubt either would be happy with that and it would probably affect the performance of both.

I'd say he has at best 3/4 years of great football left in him.I think the choice is to keep him and hope for that,or sell him in order to try and keep two players in Kagawa and Hernandez that have at best 5 years of great football left in each of them.
Maybe they won't fulfill their potential but even if only one was to show they can cut it then selling him is worth it imo.Hernandez in his first season proved he can make the grade and it'd be a terrible decision to sell him imo.Kagawa has done great things elsewhere and we still haven't seen the best of him. He's playing out of position and still looks more competent there than some of the players that naturally play there.
Also, talking about players on their way out, although he's had a poor season I think Ferdinand might stay on and personally don't think it'd be the worst idea. With Vidic definitely on his way and Giggs looking likely, the lack of experience in the squad if Evra and Ferdinand were added to that too would be frightening.Shipping that many experienced players out over one Summer seems to me like a recipe for disaster.

Hernandez has all the qualities to be an excellent striker for any top club, this idea that he only scores goals and lacks the ability to lead the line is just a myth that has developed due to his limited game time.

People see him come on as a sub and not look terribly impressive but what do they expect, nobody looks the complete player getting only ten minutes here and there. Give Hernandez twenty games in a row at a big club and this idea that he is only a goalscorer will soon disappear.

People have short memories, I believe it was the second half of the 2010/11 season where he kept Berbatov out of the side and formed a great partnership with Rooney. He was given a run in the side and he more than showed his worth, don't forget he started the champions league final and scored 20 goals in his debut season!

"When he starts - not so good"? Thats a load of rubbish really.
    I knew this would stir up the debate about this guy, my past opinions still apply. If were going to go into stats;

Explains how I feel about Hernandez

You know that I disagree with most of what you say anyway and have already had this debate with you about Hernandez in the past. My reasons stand as before. For Man Utd impact-sub is the best you will get out of him.

Rooney in the top 10? No way.

    What about Aubameyang?
The French-Gabonese striker once covered 30 metres in a mere 3.7 seconds. That's faster than Usain Bolt ran at the start of his record-breaking 100m dash in Berlin in 2009.

    That would take some beating.

Most of his goals for UTD come from when he assesses the current situation and exploits potential areas where he can poach a goal when he comes of the bench and in particular so many of his goals come from a lack of concentration from the opposing defense in the final stages of a match due to a defender being fatigued.
    Where he has started for Man Utd he can only play in one role as a true No.9 that plays off the shoulder of the opposition's last defender and this is how he would have to fit into another team but even still;
Rooney & RVP are better than him in every department so a super-sub at Man utd is all he should ever be even Welbeck links up play better.

think its basing it off a particular run a player made in a single game rather than taking it over a 10-20 game spell

Impact sub or not Hernandez is 5 years younger than Van Persie and doesn't have the injury history.Take into account Moyes style of play and his fitness intensive coaching if it was a choice as to who will be around the club for the next 5 years+ it should be Hernandez/Kagawa.I can see the reasons for choosing RVP as he is by far the better player right now.
It's a difficult decision.RVP bailed us out vs Olympiakos and to be talking about him like this now is kind of crazy. It comes down to the manager and I think a big question could arise over the Mata signing if next season we see him out on the wing with Rooney behind Van Persie. If things go badly or Mata under-performs,the bones of 70+ million that Moyes was given to start shaping his squad will look wasteful, and that could be a tipping point.

RVP is still our best player. I sincerely hope he won't be sold!

Man Utd still don't need Hernadez to start even if RVP is injured, Rooney is better a finisher / poacher than Hernandez by a mile when he's played in the right position look @ season 2011 / 2012 he scored 27 premier league goals when he was and out and out Striker and is technically a better player in every department including finishing & linking up play.

I have no doubt that Hernadez is a valuable asset and he is such a useful player to have, but I'm blue in the face saying he will only play a sub as long as he's wearing a Man Utd Shirt, when he has to compete with better players it's simple.

Who would he replace in Man City's Team?
Who would he replace for Liverpool?

If you put him in both those teams I can bet you he would still be sitting on the bench.

The amount of worldwide awareness and potential for merchandise growth that Hernandez would bring to a club would be worth an extra 10 or so million to a club. Especially a Spanish one I'd say.

Rooneys versatility is a big benefit to the team as well though. He did a great job out wide during the Tevez/Ronaldo trinity and he could still deputise there. He drifted out there for a while midweek as well against Bayern when he was getting no ball for long periods of time in the middle.
Generally if it's not working out and Rooneys not getting a lot of the ball, changing it so that he has it at his feet more is usually a good strategy more often than not.
I do agree with him first and foremost being a striker,it's just a difficult balancing act right now. With the few players fighting for pretty much two positions,it looks fairly likely at least one top quality player will have to make way in the Summer.

I stated in a previous post that a foreign move is more suited to him.
I can't see him staying in England, he would only be guaranteed first team football by a club outside of the top 4.

10 million max to be honest, nobody in the top four in the premier league would take him, and if they did he would still be benched. (Maybe Everton if they get 4th) A Foreign move is more likely.

Martinez is a big fan of Cleverly too, wouldn't be surprised to see him make a bid for him in the summer.
