Hi all,
Vanilla are planning an update to the site on April 24th (next Wednesday). It is a major PHP8 update which is expected to boost performance across the site. The site will be down from 7pm and it is expected to take about an hour to complete. We appreciate your patience during the update.

How to convert Google Maps co-ordinates to OSI

    Anyone know how to convert the coordinates given on Google maps to the osi format of easting and northing?

    According to a random point in Mayo the Google maps coordinates are 54.133393,-9.530311

    and according to OSI its 500063 , 821731.

    Anyone know the correlation between them?

    Thanks but that doesnt seem to work very well. Mayb eim using it wrong but when i picked the same point on google maps and converted it, it didnt match the value you get when you go to the same point in Ireland on the OSI maps at smartmaps.ie

    By my reckoning the coordinates displayed on that OSI application are not the familiar Irish National Grid Eastings and Northings. Instead the are IRENET95 Irish Tranverse Mercator coordinates. The coordinates of the same point in both coordinate systems are significantly different.

    Using that link provided by Bucklesman you are converting from WGS84 Latitude and Longitude to Irish National Grid Eastings and Northings. Next you are comparing the values computed with known values of the same location but from within an entirely different coordinate system. It's no surprise that they would be radically different.

    Here is a useful converter. As the poster above said, the OSI site uses ITM, while published maps still use ING. So you have to be careful. The two systems do not overlap on the island of Ireland, so you should know which system the co-ordinates you have are in.

    Jo, easy. If you click on the link above, the coordinates given by Google are under WGS84, in the 'Geodetic Coordinates' section. The OSI coordinates are in the 'Irish transverse mercator' section. Just enter them in whichever format you have and click'convert'. That will update them in all the other fields.

    Thanks for that link. Was trying to figure out how to convert the Comreg Siteviewer Easting/Northing measurements to use on bing/google maps.

    Put them into Irish Grid - Full Co-ordinates and then took the WGS84/ETRS89 results and added a minus sign to the Longitude. worked perfect!
