It would be one of my criticisms of Moyes that this hasn't been dealt with already, given that Vidic and Evra are leaving, I don't think they should be sharing the armband. Play them if neccessary but the captain of the side should be someone who is knee deep in it with the rest of us, their level of caring couldn't possibly be the same as someone who isn't swanning off to the big contract in the sun in June.

Rooney would be my choice, atitude has been A1, performances have been very good and appears to be pretty close to the manager despite what was initially thought about their relationship.

I really don't get this attitude. Should Schmeichel have not have captained Utd in the CL final or even been dropped earlier in the season when he announced he was heading to Sporting? Ronaldo wanted away for 2 years, yet he's still a hero at the club. I really don't see what Vidic has done to deserve the vitriol.

Well the thing that swung it for me was the contract signing picture on the Inter website.

Was it announced that Schmeichel was going to Sporting? I don't remember that it was, I stand to be corrected on that... I remember that we knew he was leaving but not to who and I certainly don't remember any contracts being signed up or made public anyway.

As for Ronaldo, he was a great player for us for a couple of seasons but the way he postured for a move to Real for so long tainted everything for me, I wouldn't put him in the top echelon of my United 'heroes' although he would be up there in terms of one of the best players, if that makes sense? In saying that he was first class on his return...but then to counter that he has used us as a tool for contract negotiations...you might gather Ronaldo is a character I'm very much torn on!!

Laughed at the notion that he shouldn't be allowed to watch the club he rebuilt.

So lads who do you think we'll get?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,223 ✭✭✭Macca07

Question that I asked yesterday and no one answered.

Does anyone think that Mata or Kagawa could play the same role as Giggs played on Wednesday night?

Think we'd have a chance with Dortmund, a slight chance with Atletico, PSG or Chelsea, and don't have a hope against Bayern, Barca or Madrid.

Really want to avoid Chelsea though, hate playing them.

Would love a good tie against PSG or Atletico. We don't play them too often.

I'm hoping for Dortmund. Normally I would want to avoid them like the plague, but they've got a load of injuries: Schmelzer, Gündogan, Bender, Blaszczykowski, Subotic. Somebody also mentioned that Lewandowski might be suspended too.

There really are no "good" options in the draw. It's one of the strongest last 8's possible.

I think certainly Kagawa could play that role, not sure if Mata is mobile enough.
(seems odd saying that a 37.5 million pound footballer isn't as mobile as a 40-year old)

It would be quite an attacking side if Mata, Kagawa or Giggs is played as part of 2 in central midfield.
Giggs wouldn't have played that role on Wednesday night if United weren't trailing 0-2 from the first leg and really have to go for it.

Hey lads first post here...probably gonna get mauled but here goes.

Would anyone think united playing a 3-5-2 formation would work?
As we know our centre back options are quite poor but between rafael, Jones and Evans/smalling getting a good consistent run we can pull it together

A 5 man midfield isn't as congested when one of the midfielders is a CAM and 2 play holding midfield... As for wingers not a whole pile of ours work as hard at the back as they do up front so bar Valencia (who was fairly alright against the greeks) we would be light. This midfield could accomadate both kagawa and mata if one played on the left wing and one in cam.

Up front its the effective and obvious double of Rooney and rvp.

Maybe its just me but I think this would be extremely effective against a lot of teams.

Not a ridiculous suggestion, although if Giggs was unavailable or back to his rubbish form, and we needed a playmaker in midfield, I'd prefer to put Rooney in CM, and play Kagawa/Mata at 10.

IMHO, Kagawa and Mata are more creative #10s than Rooney, and Rooney would be more effective and suited to CM than Kagawa or Mata.

in a 3-5-2 most teams play with 5 defenders and the 2 wide men pushing up as wingers, we sadly don't have the players to play this, need to be extremely disciplined to play this formation and it can be easy for other teams to attack the space left behind with full backs getting forward

Ugh... all those teams look filthy.

I long for the days when I'd have been happy to take any of them and still fancy United to have a chance.

A diamond with Fellaini or Carrick at the base with Fletcher/Cleverly/someone with an engine and Kagawa either side with Mata behind RVP and Rooney might work but you'd need a left back with a better engine than Evra for that.

We kind of played a loose version of it Wednesday night, Wednesdays formation was a bit nuts...fairly all over the place at times but we had to go for it...

I think all formations incorporating Kagawa are pretty moot at this stage, I can't see him being around beyond the end of the season.

    No
Using the resources you have to fill a hole in the team is managment

Buying a tier 1-2 winger with the thoughts to play him as a DM/CM is crazy !

Is anyone else hopeing to draw one of the top 3? I hope we do, realistically we will nearly be underdogs no matter the draw! Would love one last big European night at OT if its going to be our last for a year or more.

PSA: The draw can be streamed live from uefa's website and takes place at 12 CET (11am irish time).

I don't know. I can see what you're getting at all right, but the thoughts of having to watch a team like Bayern absolutely obliterate United is not an exciting one.

Really want PSG. We've played the others a bit over the years, and I can't remember playing them.

I'd rather a tough test too; get a tough team out of the way; either we do well or we get put out of our misery quickly. Either way, a spectacle.

So we're still a few hours off the draw itself, right :P

True, might sound crazy but I dont think anyone would really hop us. Our European form hasnt been near as bad as in the league and with the crowd behind us I think we would put a fight to anyone. Althought Butnner v Robben/Ronaldo is a frightening prospect!!
