Is Rooney not an obvious choice. He would be well able to **** a player out of it if he wasn't pulling his weight.

I'd imagine with Vidic's departure and Evra's reported departure, Rooney is next in line. He has to be. He is made for the role.

How is Rooney made for the role. Held the club to ransom twice and got great deals out of it. Yea we really want a club captain that'll screw the club over..great example of leadership. He can FRO...
Give it to someone like Jones, carrick, fletch, ddg or evans before I'd give it to that little pr1ck
I'd have said RVP a few months ago but he's acting the coconut too recently.

While I agree that that would be logical, I can't think of another instance in football where that has been the case

I can't think of any other 6 year contracts in such a massive job given to relative nobodies.
I just cannot see how they would take that risk.

Really, a guy who is prone to sulking when things don't go his way?

true he's a bit of a kn*b off the field.. but when he's playing he's passionate and gives his all. No better captain elect at the club currently imo

    also this

Jones - too young and not a consistent fixture in the team.

    Fletcher - no.

    Carrick - too old.

DDG - too young and I'm not a fan of keepers as captain.

Evans - not a permanent fixture either.

    Who else is there?

Agree with everything there apart from DDG. I think he'd be a good captain. Has overcome a shaky start to his career in England to become at least the 2nd best keeper in England and has been our only consistently good player this season, producing big moments when it matters like last night.

    I love him.

Yeah but would he be looking for a pay rise if he got the armband?

Imagine if Chelsea decided that they were not playing Drogba when he was leaving.

Vidic is still an important player, a brilliant defender and is still captain, for me he should continue to play.

    He's not playing well

All great points but he has a limited influence as captain when he's in goal. Rooney is everywhere on the pitch and is more likely to get onto a winger or a midfielder and then drive the team forward.

No other candidates really. Rooney will be captain. Even if someone was brought in that was captain material (unlikely but anyway) you'd have to give it to a current player. If fletcher was playing it would be him but nobody in the starting 11 is even remotely motivational. At least rooney can lead by example when he wants to (see first half of this season).

Kroos will be getting the armband after we entice him after we draw Bayern tomorrow and 70 thousand fans sing his name when we knock them out

Suppose yeah. Casillas was/is captain at Real wasn't he? I suppose it's hard to compare to him though, one of the greatest keepers in the history of the game! It would have to be Rooney otherwise.

Jones and Evans will be permanent fixtures from next season so could be considered

Carrick is an automatic starter once fit so should be considered

Fletch could be a club captain similar to Gary Neville in his last few years/Puyol at Barca

Rooney is a scumbag who has little leadership skills other than bawling people out of it and throwing strops when he doesn't get his way, that's not leadership..i don't want the captain of this club to be a total liability whos likely to get sent off for seeing red at the drop of a hat...yes all these sound similar to Roy Keane but Keane was a different class and led by example, he never asked a team mate to do something he wouldn't do himself

I'd not be against a new player coming in and being made captain, someone like Hummels..

    Definitely no agenda there anyways.

Roo is captain material. No doubt. He's been sent off less than our current captain so no more a fcuking liability

    Outrageous.

He's had disagreements with the club which have been resolved, understandable that they would leave a sour taste for some fans but your reaction is totally pathetic.

Jones and Evans as club captain of Manchester United? Carrick? Possibly the most passive man in world football. Give it a rest.

When was the last time Rooney was sent off by the way?

You have a bitter hatred for Rooney and I have a feeling you're not going to like the club very much when it is inevitably announced that Rooney will take over from Vidic as club captain.

and your point is?? am I not supposed to express my opinion on a forum??

Vidic was sent off for his actions on the pitch. Whens the last time ye heard something about his actions off it..never..thats the type of captain ye want...we all give off about Terry being an absolute jack ass etc..how is rooney any different

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,017 ✭✭✭Chagan

Jonny Evans would be my choice for captain. He is one of our first choice CB, been one of our more consistent performers, is noticeably vocal and came up through our youth setup.

Whens the last time Roo was sent off for his actions off the pitch exactly? Rooney isn't a racist for one? What exactly has Rooney done off the pitch that makes him as bad as racially abusing someone? I must've missed the "Memo for outraged fans"

Ignoring your tirade against Rooney for a minute, I hate the idea of a club captain.

The captain should be someone who plays every week and is on the pitch to get the best out of the players.

This nonsense about giving it to someone who will play once every month is ridiculous.

I like Fletcher but it would be pointless giving it to him.

Rooney would end up being made captain anyway for each match as he's the next in line after Evra.

Just give it to him to start off with and stop all of the other faffing about.

Yes Timmy you must have.. its the memo which says as a supporter I'm entitled to have an opinion as much as you are. I'm not asking you to like my opinion no more that I have to like yours.

Yes I will accept that its been a long time since he has been sent off.

Yes he might not be a racist either, but is this not the same guy...agh I'm not getting into it..theres no point

I accept the points you make and fully expect he will be named club captain in the summer but I still maintain there's no way he should be made captain after twice holding the club to ransom at times of crisis when he could've kept quiet and worked his socks off

He's been at the club ten years. He's almost our leading scorer in history. When he's really on his game, he is by far our best player. He is fiery but has controlled that recently. As for holding the club to ransom. I dunno. As long as he gives 100% every time he plays, and he does in my view, then I don't really mind. If the club couldn't afford to pay him, or didn't want to pay him, or didn't see how important he is, he'd be long gone.

A captain doesn't necessarily have to be someone who will do a load of shouting and roaring on the pitch or be someone who covers every blade of grass.

He needs to be a good communicator off the field, in the dressing room and on the training pitch. He also needs to have the ability to be a middleman between the players and management team and to both take and give kicks up the arse as required on behalf of the team.

He needs to be a regular starter putting in a shift every time he plays, he needs to be someone who has an air of intimidation about him as he leads the team out onto the pitch and also needs to be someone who the team will go to war both with and for.

I'm not sure if some of the names already mentioned would fit my criteria and while Rooney has certainly acted the maggot in recent years over contracts, I don't think his on-field commitment has ever really been doubted so I would think that he's really the obvious choice.

    +1

I'm expecting Evans to be named vice captain, he's our most vocal player when Vidic isn't playing and now first choice.

Hope he was ejected for persistent standing - people behind him trying to watch the game in peace. disgrace.
