To be honest man, if that is how you remember Welbeck's performance last night then there is something seriously wrong with how you watched the game.

Differing opinions then I guess. I certainly don't agree with the idea he should have been MOTM or close anyway.

I've given Welbeck a lot of grief about him generally not being able to hit a barn door with a banjo, but his ability to carry the ball at pace and movement is going to be vital in the next round no matter who we get.

Well in last year's Champions League knock out game with Real Madrid it was Welbeck who scored a goal, while RVP was missing easy chances.

Welbeck played out of his skin last night, I don't know how anyone could see it differently. I almost thought he had been replaced by his heretofore unknown, but far more talented, twin brother.

I wouldn't agree with that at all. At the very least the first half was one of the best halves of the season. The game overall was one of our better performances.
Can think of probably 8 or 9 games where they played to a similar standard.

Thought Utd had a decent twenty mins in the first half but Olympiakos had two or three very good chances and 2-0 flattered Utd a bit. The Greeks were actually a lot better in the 1st half than the second. But again this is all about opinions. May watch it again later.

I was thinking Giggs over Fellaini for attacking ability. Carrick over Fellaini as Carrick is an experienced player in Champions league and as fellaini is just back from injury he would probably struggle with a fast pace early on.

he did play well but he also missed a sitter (even though it was offside), he fell over the ball and he also tripped over his own feet when he couldve been through on goal.

personally id like to see him as a winger and away from the goal.

I agree and have been playing long enough to see your point in full flow for a couple of decades now having now also coached and in the process of getting my badges.

    But...

    There is big change underway.
I was as skeptical as the next person when I read about the introduction of 'small sided(non competitive) 5-a-side' for school boy soccer, but I can assure you its working and I am already seeing the benifits with a couple of school boy teams I coach.

Its not perfect, not by a long shot, but its making sure the kids are getting the required number of touches (which we analyse amongst other things) and the elite type player/kid still blossoms, and the average kid also gets a more condensed form of coaching and skill set.

I truly believe that when this current crop of kids playing this new system reach senior level we will have a more continental type players on our hands.

The new small sided games are class all right. The best thing to happen to Irish football in I don't know how long. But that wouldn't take away from what Lloyd is saying about the lack of knowledge of the tactical side of the game in amateur football.

Can you seriously name 8 or 9 games where we've played better? Arsenal at home maybe, Leverkusen away maybe (I'd rate Olympiakos ahead of Leverkusen btw), Swansea in the 1st game of the season, Norwich in the cup, after that I'd be struggling, and all of those games were before Xmas.

Last night was one of the better performances this season, you can't argue with that, but maybe that shows how poor our season has been.

Don't know if this was posted but did anyone else notice the 'Come on David Moyes' chant being drowned out by whistles last night? The whistles were a bit loud to be the away fans and I would have thought they wouldn't get that particular chant anyway or have a particular issue with it, so were they our own?

Could anyone who was present enlighten?

What Wellbeck brings to the team is the willingness to run in behind the opposition defence, can't pick out too many,if any of our other attackers who do that. Our wingers seem happy to come deep to get the ball or are static when receiving it.This makes us easy to play against,Wellbeck might not get everything right but he can worry defenders with his off the ball running and directness.

Just watching the highlights now on SS1.

Any news yet on van Persie?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 17,638 ✭✭✭✭bangkok

Being honest, I only have one memory of his involvement in the match last night, and it was him fluffing a shot from 2 yards out with no goalkeeper in the net. Granted, it wouldn't have been allowed, but he still couldn't get the ball in the net.

Otherwise, I felt he was somewhat anonymous; all our creativity came from the other side of the pitch or down the middle, and while he didn't have a bad game, I certainly don't feel he contributed half as much as the other 4 players you mentioned.

did you watch the same game I did? welbeck was one of our best players, had some great skill, drew a few fouls, stretched their defence on numerous occasions, liked up with giggs and evra a few times down the left, made some great runs thorough the middle, everything that was missing in our last few games.....

The news on SSN earlier was that there'll be news tomorrow. They actually lead into a commercial break with "Coming up, news on Robin Van Persie's injury from last night." Then when they came back, they showed his free kick while saying "News expected tomorrow on the severity of the injury."

So i guess there was no news!

It looked to be more of a bang than any sort of twist which is a good thing around that area, it also seemed to be more on the hammer than the knee... my first reaction was dead leg, we'll see.

Welbeck was excellent for all of the first half and a good bit of the second. The amount of times he carried the ball past Greek players, linked up with his teammates or pressured the opposition was unreal. He was easily one of our best players.

He did fluff one chance, the one that was ruled offside. That happens to all strikers from time to time, even the likes of van Persie and Rooney.

Thought he was brilliant in that first half. He was direct and added pace to our attack which has been seriously lacking. He also stays the **** out of RVP's space which helps (take notw Ashley Young!)

It says a lot when the likes of Hamann, Neville ans Carragher say that he makes a big difference to our style of play.

Have to hold my hands up and say Moyes got it right last night. But no use in us putting in one decent performance in 25. Need to follow it up with another on Sat and improve substantially against City. Maintain the high pressing game we played last night, especially if you're going to play two front men.

He's bought a bit of time with the win last night but we need to come up with the goods for the rest of the season before Moyes changes people's minds.

I wouldn't be as keen at sussing out injuries as you appear to be Eric, i just thought myself at the time that it looked nasty and to be at a delicate part of the leg, my first reaction was shattered knee!

Who knows, maybe he knew Moyes wasn't going to take him off before full-time so he took his only chance for a standing ovation with the stretcher :pac:

Like I said previously, with so much RUBBISH campaigns and petitions constantly happening on the web, why isnt there a "boycott PP" one.

In the bookie world there are pretty much despised, don't know how they continue to do business. They can't even offer competitive odds anymore over the other chains.

I'd love to see how consistent there are with the United jokes if the majority of the fanbase took their business elsewhere ;)

They just try to appeal to the masses and sure the majority hate United, easy points for them to score...I had a similar thought about Today fm this morning or was it yesterday, when Ian Focking Dempsey was having a pop off United and Moyes...like he knows sweet FA about soccer

Admittedly I'm not a big better, but I would rather take a bet with Dirty Frank down the end of my street than do business with PP. They make me feel dirty, and not in a good way.

I'll tell you what, I wish I didn't know as much about knee injuries...but 4 operations will do that to you!
