Do you really think he's worth 300k a week though?

No. I think wages and transfer fees have gotten completely out of hand recently (see Gareth "100m, 3rd best player in the PL" Bale) but I do think he deserves to be our highest paid player. Its not my money the club is spending and clearly with people like Woodward raking in the money for United they can afford to spend it. Rooney is, without a doubt. One of our best players.

His "poor form" is vastly exaggerated by people and I honestly believe the team would be in a much, much worse position were he to be sold. He dragged us through some periods when he needed to and I can say I'm glad Fergie left before forcing Rooney out. (Really I'd love to have both at the club still but the point stands)

My frustration with Rooney is I find he does nothing for 88 minutes of a match, but has 2 minutes of magic in every match. Sometimes the magic wins games, other times it doesnt and its harder to look past the rest of his game. I do find he tends to try too many "Hollywood passes" rather than simple ones, but then so too does he play in a team right now who don't make themselves open for the simple passes.

Rooney really should be playing up top, its his best position, with Mata behind him.
Drop RvP for a while if needed.

and van Persie's form justifies him being dropped too.

It took 4 months for him to drop Valencia for poor form. Honestly, I think Moyes would be too scared it would be another stick to beat him with :/

If RvP was getting the service he would score goals. He has got nothing of late.

Its the going rate for close to a lot of players theses day, Tevez wasnt on far off that at City, I am sure Ballotelli was the same. Shevchenko and Ballack at Chelsea were on savage money 8 years ago.

Its a hell of a lot of money but I rather have him on 300k a week than lose him and see him replaced with a massive transfer that flops.

This is where I think Rooney had leverage over the club, and I think he took advantage of it. The money could have been better spent by Utd on other players. He should have been sold on and had the money re-invested in the club.

to be honest moyes' days are numbered. if he has been scared into not upsetting players this season, then now is the time to fix that.

moyes has nothing to lose as he is already on his way out the door. prob at the end of the season if we are honest.

he might as well go for it. show what he can do. if thats dropping big names then so be it. if its playing a new formation go for it. if its playing players that fans arent happy with then try it. i mean there is no way he stills has majority backing. he might as well take a risk and try to prove why he was chosen.

if i where him id play mata kags and jaun behind rooney. give it a go

I wanted to post the above image previously after the Fulham match, a.k.a. The Game Of 82 Crosses. In fact there's a few too many occasions this season that I could have applied that meme to. Some of the 'records' (read: lows) that the club have reached have left me more bewildered than anything else.

    -That penalty shoot-out.
-82 crosses in one match, 0 return.
-United with almost the same points, same goals scored, one less conceded as Everton from this stage last season.
-7 defeats in 14 matches this year, previously 6 in 12, averaging a 50% loss rate for Manchester United - reigning PL Champions.

Some of this is truly amazing stuff, which couldn't have been fictionalised prior to it happening. Only the current state of affairs is such a massive kick in the balls for us, it would be something to awe at. No wonder every other club's fans have little patches of yellow stains on the front of their trunks from laughing so hard at us. As I've said before, the laughter doesn't bother me, it's the fact that they have multiple warranted reasons to be laughing that gets me.

I'm having a hard time remembering when the last time he played well for 60+ minutes. Maybe Spurs in December. He's massively under performing. Obviously consistently rubbish is vastly overstating how bad he had been but he's been poor this year and he was poor last year too.

Certainly not someone who deserved a new contract.

You don't score 13 and assist 13 before Paddy's day by being consistently rubbish or playing poorly. You have no interest in how good or bad Rooney actually is because you have made your mind up about him based on his contract sagas.

ok so basically we are going with the whole line that players will go for money???

why didnt ye say? i love this arguement:D

man utd will offer player x 300k a week to play for them in a non european football season

    or

team b will offer player x 250k a week to play and star in a european football season

just because there are merceneries in the game doesnt mean that the biggest stars are merceneries.

kroos, vidal, pogba, costa, draxler, ronaldo, messi

do you really think any of them would take an extra 50-100k a week over playing euopean football??

city and chelsea already have players on over 200k a week. arsenal have shown they are willing to pay big for big players. liverpool have suarez on 200k a week. psg bayern barca monaco madrid. all teams that pay players on 300k a week.

united are not the only club offering big wages

money talks but the kind of money that would be needed to blow the others out of the water is the kind of money united cant even afford

Most of those teams already have top quality players in certain positions. Theres plenty of talent out there up for grabs. They can't buy them all and give them a first team place. For example for the link up box to box midfielder there is the likes of Pjanic, Vidal, Kroos and Gundogan and probably more that I don't know about. That's a single position. We could at least double all of those players wages and guarantee them a first team place at one of the biggest clubs in the world.
    Paulegend wrote: »
ye definitely are, but what im refering to is if vidal or kroos (as an example) had to choose between city and united who do you think he would choose?

United. How many titles have city won? They already have Toure and Fernandinho as well.

    Paulegend wrote: »
well of course they would be able to sustain those wages for a couple of years but what about everyone elses??

thats 15 million a year just on rooney

if they offered a new player similar wages thats 30 million a year on wages for just 2 players

they still have players like dagae rvp young kags mata nani all on wages of more than 100k a week also which is (if they where only on 100k a week each which they are not) another 30 million

so thats 60 million a year on a team of

dagae, rvp, young, nani, mata, kags, rooney and if they make one big attacking signing (who everyone believes could be kroos)

thats before making 3 defensive signings

no europe means sponsor income will start to slow down.

15 million a year for 1 player is not sustainable long term for a club without european football regardless of current sponsorship deals

The club will still make 350-400 million profit this year. There is 800k-1000k a week in wages being freed up in the summer. Money is not a problem. Most players coming in won't be getting 300k a week. Mata is on 120k a week. The likes of Kroos would start at 150k a week or so. He's on 70k a week at Bayern. He's not going to jump to 300k.

I expect Moyes to do the right thing tomorrow. They'll win 4-0 and his job will be safe for another few months.

No chance. How many times have we scored 4 goals this season? how many clean sheets have we had?
    Red Crow wrote: »
Why wouldn't Rooney be happy? He's getting paid £300,000 a week and he's been consistently one of the worst United players over the past two years.

    Really?
    Red Crow wrote: »
Everyone pointed out earlier on this season that Rooney was United's best player. That was complete nonsense and people were afraid of losing him and so began to judge him completely irrationally.

United best football this season has been when Kagawa played in the hole. Rooney has been useless for two years in that position. Our best football last season came when Rooney wasn't playing in the hole (Real Madrid x 2).

He's a great striker and proved that when he played there. But he has been utterly ineffective in the hole for a long time now. If Rooney is to play in the hole then we need a midfield that can dominate and supply him with lots of ball and give him an infinite amount of touches. Otherwise our attacks get smothered quickly and we're under pressure again.

The only nonsense here is what you are spouting. Rooney has consistently being one of United's best players during his entire career. The number 10 role might not be his best position but he still ranks as one of the best in the world in that role and his goal and assist record backs that up. The rubbish midfield is severely limiting how good he can be.

    Bollocks.

    PL record for Rooney.

    2013/14 - 11 goals, 12 assist as the number 10.
    2012/13 - 12 goals, 10 assists as the number 10.
2011/12 - 27 goals, 8 assists playing as the CF.
    2010/11 - 11 goals, 11 assists as the number 10.
    2009/10 - 26 goals, 6 assists as the CF.

    He's rubbish though right?

No he shouldn't. He's one of the best players at the club, the best English player and has consistently been one of if not the best player at the club during his career.

Have to say kinda happy to see Moyes smiling. Look for all the bad **** and rubbish going on, he's still a man the world of football are dissecting.

He has looked visibly different as the season has worn on, and looked like stress is getting to him. You can see him nearly ageing five years this year.

Behind it all it's still a man who's taken a dream job which has turned into nothing short of a nightmare.

Not even going to ATTEMPT to spin bolloxlogy from players and coach smiling, I just think it's nice to see, I can't even imagine the toll physically and mentally it must all be taking on him.

That's ridiculous, I'm not happy about him being rewarded with the contract again, sets a bad precedent but it was important to keep him. He's an out and out striker who's lost the silky first touch that allowed him to play deeper earlier in his career and changed it to a heavy powerful striker's touch designed to gain quick space for a shot. I'm not sure he has it in him to adapt back. He's lost a lot of anger and drive too, you see it in flashes but for the most part his best performances come when he has to prove something or feels wronged. His touch improved when he got angry against Liverpool which was quite noticeable.

I saw you say this a while ago. It really is a daft idea that a footballer wouldn't be able to control the ball in different ways based on what they needed to do at any given time. Even the idea that a striker needs a certain type of touch so much that they wouldn't use any other type of touch is mad.

For what it's worth, it looks like the people are threatening to take down "The Chosen One" banner during the match on Wednesday, if Stetford End flags refuse to remove it themselves.

There could be war tomorrow evening, especially if things go against us again.

Have you watched the last 2 games? He was total rubbish in both.

We were noticeably better when he was taken off in the west brom game and would have been if he was taken off in the pool game.

Honestly so many in here spouting total rubbish.

You're the same kind of person who told me I was an idiot for saying Rio was past it back in October. You obviously don't watch the games.

I don't think the team selection is really going to matter under Moyes but if push came to shove I'd like to see something like this for the Olympiakos game. Give the captains armband to Rooney.

    DDG
    ----Smalling-Jones
    Rafael
    Buttner
    Carrick
    ---Rooney---Fellaini----
    --Nani
    Kagawa--
    Welbeck

    That was a test :)

On the dropping RVP thing...absolutely he has had limited service and would score given chances, however, in the predicament we are in he is offering little, little in the way of mobility, enthusiasm to run the channels, harass defenders or provide a threat in behind (which he probably wouldn't even in his best form).
When he has been getting a half chance he kind of swings a leg at it like spoilt child who didn't get to wear his favourite number. His demeanour on the pitch is cat...its like we are playing with 10 men at times. Not a guy you'd bring to the trenches.

It would also be a massive show of authority from the manager.

I think he'll be off and have thought so since about 3 games into the season.
I'd play Rooney up front, harrying and fighting for everything, captaining the side and setting the tempo for the rest*
Id play Kagawa or Mata behind then as a proper midfield no.10, again Moyes played more or less 442 on Sunday leaving us severely out numbered which was oh so frustrating from the point of someone willing to give him every chance.

David Moyes needs to just have a bloody go at the thing...

*I wanted Rooney gone after the summer antics but have been really impressed by his attitude this year. I think Vidic should be stripped of the armband if for nothing else other than that photo of the contract signing with Inter.

The Stretford Flags in fairness are United supporters trying to make the atmosphere as good as possible in the ground. They have been behind the success of the singing section and they have also produced some top quality banners.

Yes this "Chosen One" is bad, but really only in hindsight. Plenty of other banners for other teams would look bad too if manager was doing crap.

On the RVP topic. Agree with bloodbath. He's been poison lately.

I've said it about five times now. He scores his open goal against Fulham...two sitters against Arsenal and his strike against Olympiakos we will have had a totally different month.
