Don't think I'll ever buy rounds ever again after getting big squares this year, bit more akward but manageable all the same
alot neater in the shed and on the trailer aswell. and its easy to just take a small piece off the square rather than the whole round bale falling apart

Ah I'll have to let the father have his own way on some things ha. But we used two round bales in every shed so the big squares would have been handy

297th time I will say this. Buying fodder in "bales" in Ireland is a con job. Hay, straw etc should be sold by weight over a weigh bridge and moisture tested.

I see it locally here, bale of hay €3.50, but if you go through the load you will see the smallest "bale" is half the size of the largest "bale", but they're all €3.50.

Have to agree and the best examples are in the west of bad value, like most things bulk is best value, I used to get rounds in straw and just got talking to lad I get straw off this year, would be friendly enough with him, just asked him if he was buying as a farmer would he buy rounds and he said no, said there's one old man he's being dealing with for years that won't take anything but 8x4x4 in straw, and he said this year he gave him €47/bale delivered for it no problem, might sound dear but there's 4 of the 4x4 bales in one of them so even at €47 divided by 4 it's works out that at the same rate the round would be €11.75 delivered, and I'd say you would do well yo get it for that in the yard, now unless the big squares were going to make your life more difficult I couldn't see why ya wouldn't get them, also it's a lot more efficient regarding space in shed and getting it delivered, like my man can bring 62 rounds on lorry, he brings 33 big sqs so in equivalent to rounds he's bringing 132 rounds in one go, one other thing about 4x4s is it can depend on man on baler and baler how much is in them where as big sqs are packed well

Dead on on that. We bale our own straw here and there packed to the last no matter who we do them for. Big difference in our bales and these bales out of a class baler

You ll be saying it again con :D
I remember when I first got my square baler last year and started to work it the bales were coming out no more than 21/2 foot long. I adjusted the baler to let them out longer. Was chatting to the fella I bought the baler off afterwards and he said the farmer he was baling straw for last wanted to sell the bales so wanted them small.

How do you suggest that can be done without adding more cost to the bale. We do not live in a tillage county and have to import straw from further south. I would imagine there would be an extra cost on delivery if the lorry has to detour to a weighbridge.
You pay for what you get, if the bales are not up to scratch then either pay less or reject them.
If you buy from the same person year on then they will not try to pull a fast one on you. That is what we find anyway.

Yeah, told the story before about buying hay last Spring at the mart. Upset one seller when I had picked out 29 bigger small squares he came along with a loaf of bread of a thing and I told him it wasn't going in our trailer thanks very much. He threw it against the trailer and took off in a huff. I had been picking the bales in front of his son who didn't care, I'd say he got reddened at home for it that night. They're all €3.50 a bale, why the hell would I take small ones?

It was good hay to be fair to the man, no complaints at all there.

Got a luad of straw here yesterday. Nothing in the bales. Takes 1.5 bales to bed where it only took one of our own out of a krone. Shouldn't have listened to the father and insisted in buying big squares instead

Tis the same here, ye try to raise the meal and says it's too much. Impossible to try and finish bullocks..

How do ya find the krone? There was another fella on here with one. He had some Jex cattle too :p

I don't I was just annoyed by it, he wanted to sell only on his terms which was a bad deal for me, so I decided I was only going to buy on my terms. Dose of his own medicine.

I got a new set of wellys the other day, steel toes in them, only set me back 25quid also! Funny enough I dropped a mad heavy door on the toe only today, I was bloody glad to have them! Only small issue is the edge of the steel toe rubs off off the top of my foot and is uncomfortable.
