    lads, how celerey-ey is celeriac?

I cannot stomach celerey, would celeriac ruin a dinner?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,230 ✭✭✭Merkin

What do you hope to do with it? I love both but hubster doesn't like celery at all but quite likes celeriac. Why don't you try a little first to see if you like it?

If it's mash/purée you're doing use half potato and see how you get on.

Bought a pheasant in Lidl yesterday, planning on cooking it tomorrow but not really sure what to do with it. I've never had it before. Do I roast it like a chicken maybe? Any suggestions for accompanying gravy/ sauce?

Let us know how it turns out please.

We cooked the pheasant last night, in a word it was disappointing. The skin was lovely and crispy but honestly the flesh tasted just like roast chicken, plus the bones were smaller and it was therefore more awkward to get the meat off the carcass. It wasn't undelicious but I wouldn't recommend it; we certainly won't be getting it again. Going to try the quail next though!

So, I finally did it: cut myself rather dramatically while chopping herbs. It was the briefest lapse of concentration, but the middle finger of my left hand just drifted under the blade of a very sharp santoku, and I sliced right down through the nail from just below the cuticle towards the tip, right into the nail bed.

Bizarrely, it didn't really hurt at all, although it bled a fair bit. I'm pleasantly surprised not to have a large clot under the nail, but I'm trying to keep it under wraps for a while in the (vain?) hope that the nail will bond back together.

    Yikes!!
I've cut myself chopping herbs more that chopping anything else - it's hard to grip them and keep your fingers out of the way. I did that on Christmas morning a few years ago - sliced the tip off my finger!

Back in my pre-family man days I used to enjoy a few scoops in the afternoon & then have the pre-Mrs Billy & pals over for dinner on a Saturday night.

A half gallon of stout & chopping with a Chinese cleaver regularly resulted in a game of "Guess who has the fingertip?"

Having kids put a stop to my gallop & has led to many years of damage-free digits.

Wow! What an episode of Masterchef. Still only the semi's......

...saw that. Very good cooking for the final dishes. Hoping the website has some of the recipes.

Myself and OH are trying to change our eating habits coming up to Christmas (so we've already developed a habit for January and also so we can have our few days pigging out almost guilt free :-) ), usually just have a very small lunch on a saturday soup or whatever, and then get a huge take out on Saturday night, but this weekend I'm thinking of making taco mince and using lettuce leaves instead of taco shells, homemade guacamole, side of salad with chopped ham, pineapple and red onion - maybe some cajun spice and mixed with either mayo or olive oil and stuffed portabello mushrooms stuffed with spinach and cheese - no breadcrumbs! So looking forward to this meal nom nom nom!

It was absolutely phenomenal wasn't it? I love Michel Roux Jnr as he strikes me as a very fair individual - he is never gratuitously nasty to people, always very kind and encouraging and his little face lights up when someone cooks a good plate of food too. Both him and Monica were genuinely bowled over by the standard of cuisine presented to them last night.

I think Adam is a serious contender and has been from the start but he absolutely needs to up his game now. The other guy has improved by leaps and bounds since the start of the process and I think Adam needs to as well (even though he came in at a very high level indeed).

I like the Spanish guy David as well (his lobster and gazpacho was my idea of heaven!) but he really needs to be a little more ambitious in what he cooks.

Last night's programme was just amazing - I'm desperate to go to Dinner for dinner or lunch, the food looked unbelievable!!

My husband says that my watching Masterchef is akin to a bloke watching football on the telly as I'm regularly shouting at the telly with statements like "You need to up your game buddy!" and then going "Phwwwwooooooaaaaahhhhhh" when the food is particularly pleasing looking (a bit like when a goal is scored I should imagine)......It's just like food porn to be honest! :P

Why do women never do well on this show? Why is that men make such better chefs does anyone know?

  • Administrators Posts: 55,703 Admin ✭✭✭✭✭awec

To be fair, the last series of the amateur Masterchef had a woman win it. Her food was unreal.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,687 ✭✭✭nompere

Claire Lara won the professional version in 2010 and Keri Moss was one of the joint winners in 2012. It's hardly a case of women not doing well in this competition.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,230 ✭✭✭Merkin

It's the exception rather than the norm. Even when a woman does win it's not like she is going to be up against lots of other women - it's invariably a male dominated competition.

  • Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 30,661 Mod ✭✭✭✭Faith

I don't watch masterchef much, but I watch an American chef competition called Top Chef. It starts out with 14-18 chefs and through a series of challenges, one winner is left. In 10 seasons, there has only been 2 female winners. It's often been the case that the top 3/4/5 chefs are all male.

I don't know what it is. Maybe men are better able for the pressure of situations like that? Maybe it's because cheffing is a bit of a boys club? I really don't know why men seem to excel over women in chef competitions.

Australian masterchef finished recently (I just watched the finale on Monday though) and 2 of the 3 finalists were women.

In general though the "top chefs" who mentor them and suggest dishes and stuff are all men - maybe they tend to take charge a bit more, dare to go out on a limb with unusual food and take risks?

Not food related, but I'm going to use this platform anyway :D. My brother and SIL live in Australia and it is a NIGHTMARE every year trying to get gifts to them. It takes forever, and costs a phenomenal amount of money. I just managed to turn a €20 amazon order into a €50 amazon order by adding giftwrap and shipping. My poor mum spent €45 on just postage the other day! When will they ever develop proper online shopping over there?

    /end rant

That's crazy Faith. You'd think they'd be better organised over there. If you ever want to send books, Book Depository deliver for free everywhere in the world. I use them quite a bit.

Brilliant!! It was books I ordered in the end. I've just tried to cancel my amazon offer and if it cancels successfully, I'll reorder them from the book depository. Unit costs are higher per book, but with the free delivery it's almost half the price.

    Thanks DB!!

Book Depository is excellent. I've just ordered Martha Stewart's Cakes for my friend in Hungary, she couldn't believe it was free delivery, but she couldn't figure out who sent it either as they didn't print who it's from.

On another note, I was following Masterchef Australia too. Wasn't mad about the winner, but I'm delighted the other two won prizes as well, much to their surprise.

Yeah it's a bit of a pain that they have no gift wrapping, gift receipt or note service. I'd be happy to pay for all of those. I had to put in the recipient name as "blah blah from faith" and I'll send them a card that let's them know what to look out for!

Also, they change the prices of the books based on where you're sending the books to/ordering from. Just something to be aware of.

Still a great site though. At least you know exactly what you'll pay because delivery is not added on.

Lots of woman have done well on it down the years. Both amateur and professional.

Amazon are opening in Australia soon. Won't be in time for xmas though maybe next year will be much easier.

I've been watching MC professionals, and I have to say I LOVE it. I live in Aus and the professional MC was just crap, it's all about reality TV (plot lines, stories about chefs past etc etc, tears, tears and tears)
Give me Michael Roux Jnr any day!

Did you watch it last night? I thought that the Michelin-starred chef was quite the task master - hardly surprising that he insists on perfection if he's got two stars at stake I suppose!

Thanks a million for this. I've got a book worm brother in a fairly obscure location in Eastern Europe at the moment so this is an invaluable tip, thanks for that! :)

I noticed that actually. The prices went down when I said it was Australia!

Hussey, I don't know if Amazon are ever actually going to open in Australia. Last year they swore they'd be open by this Christmas!
