Thanks guys. Everything apart from the base frame was completely edible. We dried the gingerbread out in a low oven to try and make it last until Christmas. It's all held together by about 150kg of royal icing. It was an awful lot of work for two people but I had so much fun doing it! It's even going to be featured on IrelandAM in the morning :)

The most ironic part is its the first gingerbread house I've ever made, not the most traditional start but I reckon I shouldn't have any problems tiling a wall if I ever need to!

Anyone got a recipe for Mattar/Mutter Paneer they want to share? Love it so much but just moved house and so far all my local takeaways are proving either abysmal or getting a single portion delivered comes in around €15 with minimum order size and delivery charges & can't be doing that (especially because if it's bad I'll hulk out and scare the cat)

Thank you :) it's in the powerscourt hotel in enniskerry. It's worth a trip for the smell of it alone! And the giant Christmas tree beside it helps the old Christmas spirit!

A long shot, but does anyone know where I'd get German food in cork (excluding Lidl and Aldi)?

What kind of German food? Like in a German restaurant, or are you looking for meat products that end in 'wurst'

Edit: sorry just realised you said not Lidl so am guessing a german shop?

Things like spaetzle and other traditional German foods. Lidl/Aldi sell some occasionally but it would be good to know where else to buy them. I can't think of anywhere myself!

I don't think I do, though I have a feeling I saw German stuff someplace recently. If it comes back to me I will let you know. I will be in the Eng Market on Saturday so I will have a look round. I wonder if Mr Bell might have anything like that?

On another note, what sort of recipe do you want from the Fast diet book - meat, fish, starters, soups, salads? they have some nice orientally (is that a word?) type recipes.

Could you pop up something with fish? Thanks!

Ok, I will take the book to work tomorrow and scan a few fishy ones for you. They look great, I have already eaten but I am hungry looking at them. I don't know what the portion size is but they look like really good recipes never mind the low calorie count!

There is a German butcher in Killarney. They have an excellent selection of German meats but also an excellent selection of German dried products (knorr packets and the like). They deliver too!

oh and btw, I counted ten new places like Umi that I have to try in Dublin. Heres my hit list.
    1. Oxmantown in Dublin 7
    2. Pit Bros on Georges St
    3. that new place beside Mulligans pub on poolbeg st - The Vintage Kitchen
    4. that new sushi place Zakura on Wexford St - https://www.facebook.com/ZakuraDublin
    5. Cross Cafe on Francis Street - Great Art meets Coffee - Done and great
    6. That new Tapas place also on Wexford st - http://www.lastapasdelola.com/
    7. A Killer Sandwich - new, once a week sambo, ordered on twitter on wed and pick up in city centre location on Friday! https://twitter.com/akillersandwich
    8. That new Cheesecake place from Cake Shop on South William St. https://twitter.com/CheesecakeDub - Done
    9. That new Gourmet Sausage place in Georges St Arcade - http://www.worscht-world.com/

So much food, so little time......

So knocked that place beside Mulligans on Poolbeg street off the list. Its called the Vintage Kitchen and its bloody excellent!

Really interesting lunch menu with tons of options (at least 6 starters and 8 main courses plus specials), all priced at €5 and €10 each. I went for the Duck liver creme (pate) with lime jelly, pistachios and a beetroot jam (I know). A fiver. Ridiculous. Served on a slate with toasts. Utterly divine. The rest had a risotto and seafood chowder, both were top notch quality (and massive quantity wise). You could have the chowder as a main, no problem.

For mains I had a smoked haddock and pea risotto. Again very solid and again a very large lunch portion. A tenner. The other 3 had Lamb shank, supreme of chicken and a wild game stew. All large portions again, all delicious and pretty faultless bistro cooking.

We even had the half baked chocolate cake for dessert between two (fiver) and it was fabulous. and of course massive.

As for the place itself, its definitely shabby chic, but pretty comfy. The service was attentive, the food really excellent.

And its BYO. I think it must be owned by someone who won the lotto.

I went to the cheesecake place tonight. Been wanting to go for a while but I don't get into town much anymore. We bought a Nutella and a peanut butter one and we're planning to eat it when the baby is in bed. Can't wait!

I had a free taste of a lemon and blueberry one and it was delish :)

Bought a pheasant in Lidl yesterday, planning on cooking it tomorrow but not really sure what to do with it. I've never had it before. Do I roast it like a chicken maybe? Any suggestions for accompanying gravy/ sauce?

Let us know how it turns out please.

I'm looking to pick up a few bits of unusual meats, venison, rabbit, ostrich etc.

We'll probably head out to this guy and buy a few bits to freeze: http://www.organicfoodsireland.com/gourmet_game.php

Did anyone see the four meat roast thing in Aldi? I think it was four kinds of poultry - all wrapped around each other. My husband wanted to get it for the laugh but it looked so gross. I think it was only €9 too which seems wrong.

I bought a loin of bacon yesterday and then realised I have never actually cooked one. Anyone have any tips? I have vague memories of my granny boiling them and then cooking cabbage in the bacon water.

    Turducken!

I know that's three birds, but any excuse to use that word.

Bought one of those four bird roasts a few weeks ago. It was ok, the marmalade baste on the bacon wrap was the best bit, but you could taste all the different meats.

    Boiling bacon - yum!

Soak it in cold water for a day or two, change the water every day to get rid of the saltiness. Then bring it to the boil and let it simmer for 40 mins per kg plus 20 minutes.
Use some of the cooking water to wilt some shredded cabbage with the stalks removed. Serve with mashed potatoes and parsley sauce.
One of my favourite dinners, if not the favourite - enjoy! :)

That does sound yum - a nice winter roast dinner. I don't think I've had bacon and cabbage in about 20 years.

The four bird roast sounds less yum but glad to hear of someone who has tried it!

Bacon, cabbage, white sauce with parsley in it, floury spuds boiled in their jackets, salt, butter: Dinner. To. Die. For.

Wouldn't base your opinion of venison on sausages.

It's awesome if you get a decent cut.

    This.

The sausages are really a love or hate thing. Try venison steaks, completely different

Maybe. The cooking smells turned my stomach though and meat smells never do that to me.

But will definitely give venison another go. Maybe as a starter in a restaurant so that if I truly don't like it, I haven't wasted a large dish.
