    Disaster here today .
Blue Heifer calving to HCA Limo .
Tried the jack on her but wasnt budging .

Rang vet and was here within half hour .
I was thinking of a section but he said he reckon we get her .
Bent my calving jack half way through so had to use his .
Calf got stuck at the hips and just wouldnt release
. Had to cut the calf out in pieces .
    Sick is an understatement

I know how ya feel my man. Exact same thing happened here about two years ago. A blue cow, calf got stuck at hips when my gut said c-section. Lost the calf and vet ended up sawing him out, one of my worst days farming to see a perfect calf just cut apart and knowing it was my fault. Said never again.

6 months later had a cow in calving, knew by the feet and tension on the jack that it was a monster. Rang the vet straight away. Drove into the yard, done his inspections and came to the conclusion that the calf was dead inside. He wanted to cut him out the same way. Said no way, wasn't witnessing that again. Something was telling me to give it a chance though. Told him to do a c-section, pull the calf out and he draws a big breath as he hits the floor. 5 minutes later he's sitting up looking at us and was up sucking within the hour.

Moral of the story: Go with your gut instinct

A neighbour used to stick the very bottom of the bale with a penknife to let the water out for a few days after baling and then patch them again . He reckons no air gets in and they dry out nicely

I remember the water that came out of the bales in winter of 2010 I think it was, slicing a bale and about 5 litres would come out of them

Yea I think that would be very effective in this case alright,I might suggest it to him.
Do you think they will preserve themselves with what I imagine would be very little sugar content at this time of year?

If you ain't too sure of the bales couldn't he feed them first or at least shortly enough

I'm no expert but I doubt there would much trouble with them preserving . Did they get much rain after it was cut ?

I dont think he has enough cattle to eat them all and I think he was planning on shifting some of them on but I know I wouldn't buy them.

I mowed it on Friday and it got a couple of heavy showers on Saturday but Sunday and today were good but no real drying.

I wouldnt be too worried about them if they were mine . Sure he can sample one or two soon and see how they turned out . I dont think there is a big surplus of silage in the country this year so he shouldnt have much trouble off loading them even if they arent grade A
