ALWAYS backup before upgrading an O/S.

You really should have time machine running.

Carbon Copy Cloner has an upgrade available also in case you use that.

Downloading it now. Says I've got 3 hours left, boo.

I probably should backup some stuff while it's downloading, just in case.

My install finished 30+ minutes ago and the laptop restarted to the Apple logo with the spinning loading symbol. It already restarted once to the OS X install screen which took around 45 minutes for the full install to complete.

Problem is after the second restart it's still on the Applw logo with loading circle. Don't know if it's normal or to force shutdown? Anybody installed it yet?

Took me around 40 minutes after the first restart, then it restarted again and took a further 7-8 minutes. Always had some kind of progress indicator, it didn't stay on the Apple logo for longer than normal.

If in doubt, I'd say leave it running for a while. On the 40 minute part, mine got down to 'about a minute left', and stayed there for about 5 minutes, which had me a bit concerned, but it continued eventually. So the progress indicators may not be that reliable.

The 'about a minute left' stretched into a MS style hour on my main machine.

Took the bones of 70min to install on my Mid 2011 3.1Ghz iMac,
Not noticing much of a difference so far

This. I thought it was going to fail on my old Mac Pro.

Do I have to backup everything on my Mac first before I install it? I've got loads of files on the desktop and can't lose them. Will everything stay the same?

If you have files you want to keep you should be backing up anyway – regardless of of system upgrades. Time Machine is good, but if you've got under 5gb of important files I'd recommend dropbox. This will constantly keep you backed up to a server – good for protection against fire/theft.

Took ages for the last minute on my early 2011 macbook pro too.

Must say, it feels "snappier", maybe.

It must have been doing something that involved reading/writing to the HDD, it definitely wasn't down to memory constraints.

Remember folks, if you're running a non Apple SSD you'll need to use TRIM enabler again.

Anyone using a late 2008 (White) MacBook with mavericks? I thought that I could upgrade my old machine that I need fixed anyway but now I'm not sure...

I think you're out of luck - from the Ars Technica review:

    •iMac (Mid 2007 or newer)
•MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer)
    •MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid-2009 or later; 15-inch, Mid/Late 2007 or newer)
•MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer)
•Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer)
•Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer)
    •Xserve (Early 2009)

I had 10.9 installed very swifty last night bar for an incompatibility warning for iPhoto and Flip2mac. Once I okayed that it was straight in. I'll give it a run out when I get in but the early look was pretty good.

Liking it so far. Only found one bug. In Launchpad when I switch pages sometimes it 'sticks' and I have to swipe it again.

really disappointed with the new pages update. it has been dumbed down by the looks of it. the toolbar with font size bold underline etc is gone. the word count now floats in the middle and the format is now fixed to the right hand side.

The text formatting etc is all still there, just now in the format inspector.

    i understand why its free.

barely noticeable difference to the day to day run of the mill user. feels/looks the exact same to me.
i have a maps icon in my dock(which isn't a patch on google maps) and i can attach colours to files.
if they had the temerity to charge me for it i would have been non plussed.

im a big apple/mac fan btw so not trying to troll.

I've upgraded from Snow Leopard for free so it's a huge change for me.

oh i know its still there. just makes things a lot less practical if you change text size a lot while typing. not as practical now for taking notes from pdfs as its taking up more screen size. also i liked it when the format option wasn't fixed so i could have it on the right hand side.It just fells as if its been dumbed down as such.

I’m loving the under-the-hood improvements. In terms of RAM management and CPU usage, Mavericks is a pretty big step forward for OS X. I especially like App Nap and the way the system names and shames apps using “significant energy” (click on the battery menu). I’d say my 11-inch Air has gained at least 30 mins of battery life, which is pretty damn good considering it was down to 3.5 these days.

Safari is much improved as well. Much faster and more stable. I’ve had such a love-hate relationship with it over the years, but it has really benefited from OS X’s new yearly release cycle. I still don’t like the interface, but being able to manage what websites can use plug-ins is great - I may consider re-installing Flash now.

Quite a lot of subtle and not so subtle UI changes. Some of them seem like holdovers until OS X gets the Jony Ive treatment, or maybe just a rushed way of getting rid of Forestall’s additions. I wish they’d brought back the old Tiger Dock. Although positioning it on the left or right is pretty close.

Making Mavericks and presumedly all future OS X upgrades free (not to mention iWorks) is a pretty major strategic move by Apple. They are way ahead of both of MS and Google now in their ability to get as many of their users running the latest software as possible. I’m particularly pleased because it should result in less features for features' sake in future OS updates. They still have work to do, though, in terms of making the upgrade process as risk-free as possible.

Anybody else having Mail issues with gmail accounts? It's a disaster for me since upgrading to Mavricks. Mails going missing, flags not syncing, read mail coming up as unread on different Macs.

Have to say feeling a bit mugged off having bought the previous updates to find out its free for snow leopard users too

    Have a read of this:

You shouldn't. SL is 3 years old. You spent a total of about €45 on Lion and ML, which is nothing. OS X releases used to cost €129 every 2 years. 10.2 was €169.

The new 3D maps app is incredible

Re: TRIM, I think it depends on the SSD. I never enabled it on my Samsung 840. Everything I read recommended not to.

how do you find the notifications??? they never really worked for me in mountain lion and i don't see much of a change with mavericks.

even let nba.com to send me push notifications but nothing in 6 hours. no twitter or Facebook notifications. i message only appears if the app is open and same with mail. (i get banners when i open the apps).

thats about the only thing bugging me now.

i hate when my iPhone lights up with a fb or twitter notification and the mac doesn't.

The new website notifications are working well for me. Only problem I'm having is my mail notifications appear twice.

One thing I have found annoying in Safari is that when you click to go to a website from the bookmark pane, after the website loads, the bookmark pane remains. I have to click the button again to get rid of it. Very annoying!!

Another issue I'm having is that the App Store tells me I have an update to Pages which I have already updated!!
