I'm very dubious of this conspiracy. I'm generally not well disposed towards the Garda force, DOBby, INM, or Rae himself. But, it seems far-fetched to me that there is some cover-up. In the last few months, there have been several semi-high-profile transfers between Irish newspapers - none of those was reported by mainstream papers (although the Sindo did make noise about Richard Curran). Therefore, unless it can be demonstrated that there was a link between Gemma O'Doherty's investigation and her redundancy, there is nothing to write. It is possible that she was dumped because Rae disliked her - is that a story? Unlike the Phoenix, the IT can hardly publish a sneering unsubstantiated piece implying that there is something a-foot. Also, what would be the rational of a paper refusing to cover the antics of its biggest rival. Group Editor of those trio of titles may become one of the most powerful positions in Irish Media - if the IT could demonstrate that Rae sacked a reporter because she was getting too close to his past or his friends, it would be a huge story, and one which could greatly damage INM.


This story was publicised in a Guardian blog post. It's not the case that domestic media are silent while international papers cry foul. Greenslade's blog is very international-looking anyway, so one shouldn't read overly into the curiosity of a British paper covering a story Irish papers didn't.
