Anybody know how to work out a 1st year Arts timetable?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 851 ✭✭✭JayEnnis

    >3 Subjects
    > 2 Modules per subject
    > 2 classes per module per week + labs/tutorials.

The two modules per subject should be the only ones available and will start with the course code (Sociology = SO, Business = MN, English = EN)

    Hope this helps.

I kept getting 4 modules and no tutorials.

What subjects? Tutorials won't come up on the online timetable and 4 modules isn't impossible. I had three for law in first year.

Figured out I was doing both semesters!
Haven't picked subjects yet but I'm thinking geography and french are most likely 2 of the 3.
Will we get a proper timetable at registration?

Yeh have to bring a few bits of paperwork or copies of them and a way of identification ie passport.

I'm not bringing too much for the start, towels, pot & pan, few other bits for the kitchen and just bedsheets and that.
Don't want to clutter with everyone else so see what's the story with them and there's a tesco up the road i think for things i don't have.
You heading up on your own?

Lol after inviting all my secondary school friends to stay over any night they want throughout the college year and now I read the campus agreement saying overnight guests are strictly not allowed. Gonna have to hope they all forget that offer <.<

    Haha. That's funny.

So for Arts I'd have 3 then?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,625 ✭✭✭How so Joe

    Depends largely on your subjects.
When I was in first year I had one law tutorial a week, one Irish tutorial a week and one every second week and two French tutorials. Plus an hour language lab each for Irish and French.

What subjects are you planning on doing?

Well geography and French were ones I was planning on but I haven't picked a third. At the moment I want to go on and do primary teaching so I was thinking Nua Gaeilge (Even though i detest irish) or history maybe even psychology :L that's how undecided I am haha

You really shouldn't have that mentality. You do know how Irish intensive every primary teacher course is?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,625 ✭✭✭How so Joe

Right, well if you're doing languages, prepare for more tutorial hours. That's just something you're gonna have to put up with. It's worth it, though, because they'll help with your grammar and language skills, immensely.

If you detest Irish, by the way, I don't think I'd recommend doing it in college. You really won't do yourself any favours if you pick up a subject you hate, and you won't get any joy out of it either.
All your subject choices sound solid enough, though. I think it's one tutorial a week for history, but MCR can point you in the right direction on that one!

Thank you guys! It's not that I detest Irish, I mean I got a B3 in my LC (somehow). Just never particularly loved it.
My primary school Irish was practically non-existent. Of course it's a lot more intensive now, but the level of Irish is not too over the top. The reason I chose arts was because it left me an option to do either teaching at the end of the day.
Thanks again! Glad I found this forum.

Even so, if you don't enjoy it, don't force yourself to do it in college. You'll just end up detesting your course, skipping lectures, not doing work etc. It's not worth it. College is about doing the subjects you enjoy. And trust me when I say this; you will most likely change your career choice at least once during your time here.
