Given the recent renaming of the forum, and the conscious decision underlying that renaming that this forum is probably the neatest fit for improv (rather than Theatre, etc., where it also tends to pop up), I thought we might try a sticky for improv shows / events / workshops etc., and see how that goes. :)

    Testimonials:

“To say that I enjoyed the Neil’s improv course is an understatement. During of the course the group really bonded and week on week we could see the improvement in each other communication and improvisation skills and that was very much due to Neil’s tuition. I learned loads and thoroughly enjoyed it. Neil really knows his improv!” – Cathal (former student)

“Neil has a natural talent of bringing people together in a creative and dynamic way.” – Deirdre (former student)

"Great course! Did the level 1 course last October! Neil teaches the course in a relaxed and enjoyable atmosphere! The course pushes you to break away from routine, habit and express yourself in different ways! It can really improve your performance skills! And it was hilarious! I never laughed so hard! Well worth it!!" - Joe (former student)

“It gave us the opportunity to think outside our usual habits, and in particular I learned to take my head out of my smart phone and laptop and give people the attention they deserve. This small point alone helps me communicate, and ultimately do my job, better. I thought Neil’s instruction was particularly good and he mediated the group in a masterful way, guiding us through exercises and putting everyone at ease while out of their comfort zones. We would highly recommend this workshop!” – Aoife (former student)

I'm pleased to announce a special guest Improv teacher arriving to our shores on May 24th: Vinny Francois, director of Montreal Improv.

    venezuela+and+friends.jpg

There are 2 workshops on offer over the course of the day with a special full day price of €45 or €25 per workshop.

As an added bonus for Boardsies, Vinny will also be performing a Duoprov show with Neil Curran that night and Boardsies who attend the workshop will get free admission to the show!

    TOTAL IMPROV - 11am to 2pm
You’ve heard about saying yes and, miming, storytelling, connecting with your partner, making strong choices and all that great stuff. Super! Now let’s try and do all of them at once! This workshop presents a series of exercises that allow you to use all of the skills you’ve learned at the same time to build a fuller, richer scene.

    STORYCRAFT - 3pm to 6pm
How do stories work? Learn how to weave a tale out of thin air whether it’s two minutes long or a whole hour. Start strong scenes, build the tension as the story evolves and finish it up on a high. Audiences LOVE being taken on a journey. This workshop teaches the structures, ideas and basics of narrative improv as it applies to individual scenes or improvised plays.

    How to book:
Places are limited in workshops so to confirm your place, please email: info[at]lowerthetone.com or send faceman a PM.

Venue: The Harbour Playhouse, 30 Avenue Road, Portobello, Dublin 8.

    About Vinny
Vinny Francois has over 15 years of experience as a professional improviser. A founding director of the Montreal Improv Theatre, he has performed in more shows and venues across Canada than he cares to count. He also is on the board of directors of Mprov: The Montreal Improv Festival.

He appeared last year in the duo “Patti & Vinny” with Patti Stiles, co-produced four improv shows for the Montreal Fringe Festival and directed the tragic improv show “It’s Not You, It’s Me”. He has appeared in improv festivals in New York, Boston, Philadelphia, Austin, Ottawa, Toronto & Victoria. Vinny has held workshops in London, Paris & Antwerp.

Trained by improv luminaries Keith Johnstone, Joe Bill, Bob Dassie, Scott Adsit & John Lutz among many others

Making their debut in Dublin, meet Texan Improv troupe, 'PGraph'

Since their premier in November of 2005, Parallelogramophonograph has been more than just any improv troupe. Fiercely dedicated to the craft and art of improvised theatre, PGraph has held a weekly show non-stop for over 8 years. Early on in their time together Kaci Beeler, Kareem Badr, Roy Janik, and Valerie Ward knew they wanted to do something different onstage. Intrigued by the challenge of telling fantastic fully-improvised stories together as an ensemble, PGraph spent years developing original formats and studying the art of theatre, improv, and storytelling. They’ve toured the country and the world performing and teaching their unique brand of improv with ensemble appearances in over 40 cities in the US, Canada, Australia, and the UK.

We're pleased to have them perform two of their shows in Dublin on Friday July 31st and Saturday August 1st.

Friday 8pm Show: "Improvised French Farce" (Followed by the Frolicking Open Jam)
French Farce is an exploration of the latent comedy in social status. Infidelity, insecurity, and insatiable appetites for wealth and power collide with riveting consequences. No topic is taboo; No neurosis too absurd.

Rich in physical humor and word play, French Farce is a delight to watch. We turn a blank stage into a French salon, a blank script into sharp social commentary, and “improv comedy” into “théâtre improvisé”.

Following the show we will be opening up the stage for an open jam with PGraph!

Doors 8pm, show 8:30pm sharp for both shows.

Saturday 8pm: Villainy (Followed by the Dark Open Jam)
Villainy delves into the dark side of the human condition and tell stories that focus on the villains and anti-heroes we all love to hate.

Villainy explores the thousand faces of evil, cruelty, and hatred, all in one comical, theatrical bundle. The good, sensible person in you will tell you to look away, but you won’t. Indulge in your darker side while we indulge in ours.

Following the show we will be opening up the stage for an open jam with PGraph!

    Pricing:
    Single Show: €10
    Both shows: €16

    Venue: The Harbour Playhouse
30 Avenue Road, Portobello, Dublin 8

For participants attending the Intensive weekend, a special rate of €10 in total for both shows.

    Testimonials/Media:
★★★★★ “It was a rare treat to watch this highly skilled company”- Theatre People Australia

★★★★★ "Totally brilliant, we LOVED it." -London Improv

“It’s a testament to their commitment to the craft and and their comfort on stage that they managed to sustain a rapt audience through laugh-free periods. You know, like good theater tends to do.”
    -The Austinist.com

"Improvised comedy theatre was a genre which I previously wouldn't go within a mile of. But we said that whoever canvassed us first we would attend their show irregardless. What an eye opener! Fantastic acting, genuinely funny and a joy to watch the story unfold. Brilliant!"
    - BroadwayBaby at the Edinburgh Fringe 2011

"Capturing the true spirit of the Fringe is this US improv four-piece…the outfit maintain a charismatic warmth throughout [the performance] as well as a sharp wit and excellent understanding of how to hold their audience."
    - The List UK
