Roger Moore was my favorite growing up but looking at them all now pound for pound (and as a lifelong fan) it has to be Dalton. A crying shame he only made two. The harpoon gun-carrier plane scene in Licence to Kill is my all time fav Bond moment.

Thought Connery was a bit much, more edge than charm, Moore had too much charm and wit. Dalton for me ticked all the boxes. I would have loved to have seen Dalton in Moores later ones instead.

Dalton was completely humourless , his movies were both really good but not especially bond like , particulary " licence to kill " where the bad guy was more like a Miami vice charechter

Growing up, I loved Timothy Dalton. He definitely had the looks for Bond.

On my own here but George Lazenby for me (and OHMSS is the best film), he was true to the character in the books too. Apparently he grew long hair and a beard before the premiere and fell out with the producers so wasn't asked back.
Craig an absolute disaster, looks like a polish worker they pulled off a building site - no class whatsoever.
    Connery second and then Dalton.
Moore, with the exception of Live and Let Die, a disaster.
Brosnan good in Goldeneye, then meh.
When LALD opened in Dublin they had the speedboat used in the movie on display in the foyer. It was thrown in the back of the showroom in Western Marine in Dalkey until a few years ago

Ian Fleming stated that Dalton is how he always imagined Bond to look.

Interesting to see Lazenby mentioned. Thought he was horrendous myself but I loved Moore and many say he was bad. I guess we all have our own Bonds.

    Completely agree about Craig.

    Very handsome.

I was so disappointed when Daniel Craig was chosen as the latest Bond. The blond hair and bad skin etc... just was never how I imagined him to look.

    And now?

Still not a fan. Ok, he's very good at acting rough and he's quite raw in the films, but I think aesthetically he's not Bond for me.

I think possibly he meant Albert Broccoli.

Saw it in a Bond documentary once, sorry, obviously wasn't Fleming, somebody on his behalf. Fleming always said he saw Bond as a really dark character who would have the face and eyes of a cold blooded killer.

I think Sean Connery was the best with Daniel Craig as the second best and the modern equivalent. That said and done, I tend to like all of them. Only problem is there are a few poor films in the franchise. Let's take a quick look.

Connery: All his films were worth watching. From Russia with love, Goldfinger, Thunderball, You only live twice especially were good. Maybe Diamonds are forever was not the revenge film needed to follow up the death of Bond's girlfriend in the previous film. Never say never again was fine but I did not see why Thunderball had to be remade!
Lazenby: I enjoyed On her majesty's secret service. A good albeit sad film. Blofeld was not really killed off seriously.
Moore: Live and let die was a good film. The man with the golden gun was the first truly poor film in the series devoid of much of a plot and good action (the scenery and cultural aspects of Thailand is the only redeeming feature in it). The spy who loved me was more the typical Moore film and is entertaining and exotic. Moonraker is not as bad as painted and is quite enjoyable, if a little too like a remake of The Spy who loved me. For your eyes only is very good and feels like a Connery film. Octopussy is also very good and entertaining. A view to a kill shows Moore is tired but it is a weird-ish film with many good elements but the action scenes are poor compared to previous and later films.
Dalton: The living dayliights was a great film. Licence to kill as someone said was very like Miami Vice (indeed the plot is similar to the first few episodes of the first series where Tubb's brother is killed by a drug dealer and he comes to Miami and joins Crockett to nail this criminal who is their common enemy: it also echoes Bond's own experiences of the death of his girlfriend/wife). Licence to kill is a great film and is a much better big screen adaptation of 'Miami Vice' type story than the Colin Farrell film! It is also a great revenge film and I'd like to see one like that dealing with Blofeld (with Craig).
Brosnan: Goldeneye and Tomorrow never dies are both excellent. The world is not enough and Die another day are the two worst films in the series.
Craig: Casino Royale is excellent, Quantum of Solace is good, Skyfall is very good too. I'd like to see Craig in a sequel to On her Majesty's secret service (akin to Fleming's original You only live twice book) where Bond gets his revenge on Blofeld.

Lazenby. Much maligned, but OHMSS is still one of the best ones they ever did.

I agree with this. Lazenby did a great job as Bond. It was not easy taking on a role Connery had made his own in the previous 5 films. He fits in excellent.

As said already, it is a great shame that revenge against Blofeld was not taken seriously in a subsequent film. It would be good to have one now with Craig and it set around 1972 or whatever, where Bond tracks down Blofeld and his girlfriend Irma Bunt and exacts revenge on them and stops another attempt by them to take over the world.

Moonraker is another film that tends to get a lot of unfair press. While it is hardly the best in the series, it sure is not the worst. It is easy to judge today but the space theme was a product of the times. Also, it has good action scenes, exotic settings and is coherent and consistent.

While Connery is my favourite, I also don't believe the series would have been aided by him being in any more films. For example, Diamonds are forever is ok but poor compared to his previous 5. Lazenby's film and Live and let die (with Moore) both outshone it. Connery's heart was not in it and he was not the same man as he had been in his first 5 classics. Lazeny seemed to really enjoy himself as Bond and Moore showed great enthusiasm in the role in Live and let die, and all the films between the Spy who love me to Octopussy. Dalton was excellent in both films and deserved more. Brosnan seemed to lose interest in his latter two, which marked a departure from his previous two. Craig seems to be going from strength to strength.

    Dalton by a mile.

IMO he was the closest character to the books.

Pity he didnt get a longer run as suggested earlier.
I think he was way ahead of his time and the audience wasnt ready for that style of bond coming off the back of Moore.

he made 2 great movies, should have been in Goldeneye if it wasnt for the MGM dispute.

I didnt take to Brosnan at all, Goldeneye was probably his finest bond moment.

I do like Daniel Craig he has the ruthless killer thing down to a tee.
I would have liked to seen Clive Owen get a shot at it.

I think Dalton was excellent too and his two films were inventive and his Bond showed emotion, urgency and passion. Agreed: he was very different to Moore and was ahead of his time (very akin to Craig).

I liked Brosnan's first 2 films but his last 2 were the 2 worst of the series. Die another day was particularly horrible with its over the top stuff like invisible cars and Koreans turning into Englishmen.

Moore was good in his time but Dalton would have been way better in A view to a kill. Note the lack of action from Bond in it and Moore seems uninterested (a huge contrast with Octopussy where he was in the thick of the action). Dalton would have been good to take on psychotic Zorin in View to a kill, who was the start of that film.

Another Dalton fan here, he was outstanding in his two films. It's such a shame that he never made any more, not just because he was so good but because Brosnan came on board. He was completely the wrong type of actor to play Bond. When I think of all the really great Bond films, not one of Brosnan's makes it into my list.

Timothy Dalton was a great Bond and should have done more. I liked Brosnan's first 2 but his last 2 were the 2 worst of the series. Die another day was so poor.

The one film in the Bond series that is as of yet sadly lacking (and one Dalton or Daniel Craig would be ideal in) as I said already is the one where Bond exacts revenge against Blofeld and Irma Bunt for them killing his girlfriend/wife. It go something like this:

Bond is assigned to smuggle a fellow agent from the USSR into pre-1979 Iran. Have a chase where Bond and the agent are chased by KGB across the Caspian sea. Then, with mission complete, Bond sees a couple in his hotel in Tehran that look like Blofeld and Bunt. Then, he checks them out and see it is them, tells his rescued friend to go home to M and Bond stays on. He uncovers that Blofeld and Bunt are about to pit the Khomeini and Shah factions against each other to catapult a revolution (that really took place in 1979) to April 1972. Blofeld plans to set it up that both sides destroy each other and Blofeld can get his hands on the Straits of Hormuz and he has an Iranian puppet in SPECTRE to take over Iran and more planned to do the same in the Arab countries, where he plans to start a territory war between Iran and Iraq (again, 10 years sooner than the real one). The ultimate plan is for Blofeld to control the world and its oil and demand anything he pleases.

M is meanwhile furious with Bond for not returning from Iran. He is losing patience with Bond and his Blofeld revenge and wants Bond to help him destroy an Arab terrorist organisation which plans to detonate a nuclear device in a Western city. When Bond reports back to M that the Arab terrorists are connected with SPECTRE as part of their extortionate demands, M is onside and Bond sets out to destroy the plot but at the end imprisons Blofeld and his girlfriend Irma Bunt. He shoots Bunt in from of Blofeld and then says to Blofeld 'I'd like to let you live with the same pain I have, but I have sacrified my career too much already and have other assignments to get on with'. Then, Bond shoots Blofeld in the head and chest, places a grenade on his body and walks off with Blofeld blown to kingdom come.
