I think that's the best 'use case', the iPad/laptop as a second TV. I don't think many will use the app over their big TV at home. But for example I was playing on the 360 and had the iPad app showing the CNN Boston coverage at the same time, quite handy.

Agreed. But it's not really being pushed as an exclusive viewing experience (is it?). Moreso as a secondary one in the way you mention and the way I was able to watch the football last night.
I can imagine myself retiring for the evening with the laptop, while the other half has one of her coronation street marathons :-)

Well it's being billed as 'an extraordinary viewing experience', 'a new way to experience TV', 'a service which is exclusive to UPC customers who subscribe to Fibre Powered TV and Broadband services', so pretty much so.

Maybe it's not being pushed that way, but that's how lots of people now watch their movies/shows. I'm old-fashioned, I need my channels; but it's getting more and more popular to have no paid TV subscription and get most of your content online, with a laptop almost permanently plugged into the TV. That's what UPC are competing against, as much as Sky.

Sounds more like the Horizon box PR than the app :)

    I feel its stupid.

It's not for those with just a tv subscription. You need to be subscribed to both tv and broadband.

Also you can only use it when connected to a UPC Broadband connection. What's the point of that?

Atleast with SkyGo you can view the content out and about and you only need a TV subscription not a broadband subscription also.

    Very dissapointed.

To be honest, I am surprised that Sky still use the "sky go" model in it's current form. It's very easy to "share" account details and I suspect this is why UPC are trying to tie this down somewhat. Indeed I suspect Sky may need to do this at some point as well.........

The reason you need a broadband subscription with UPC for this particular model of deliver has to be obvious, doesn't it?

I know but it still defeats the purpose of having it, Your confined to your house or a house with a UPC broadband connection.

But I suppose it can come in handyif the parents are watching the tv and the kids want to watch something else.

It comes in very handy in a lot of scenarios.
No need for multiple set to boxes for one, can use almost any device (or more devices in future) all over the house......
As I said I am not sure how much longer sky can continue with the model they use.

Watching on my desktop PC (wifi connection) - running Chrome. Had no prob setting up Horizon but less than impressed with quality. Jerky picture on any channels I have watched. Also watched Champions League match on TV3 earlier; feed stalled continuously to the extent that it became unwatchable (have strong signal and no probs with speed) - Anyone else experiencing such issues?

When I try to change channel everything freezes and can only escape using Task Manager - Go near the volume control, same thing - Crazy!

Update - Also getting this occasionally "AN ERROR OCCURRED - Sorry, the video cannot be played at this time".

I uninstalled the 'widevine' plugin from my Mac.
Found since I installed it, even if it wasnt actuallly being used, my mac was was spinning the fan up full speed!
That's somthing I've never heard it do and I'm on a brand new Macbook Air with with asymmetric fan etc...

Hey, UPC... sort this **** out and get a proper plug in that doesn't kill my system!

I had the same problem, but the UPC website has the fix - an old version of widevine.

Unfortunately the older version keeps aggressively prompting you to upgrade. It's very intrusive too. I was delivering a presentation last week and keynote died as the prompt suddenly appeared and displayed to all.

    Very annoying.

Deleted Widevine, its just to effin irritating getting a reminder to update dozens of times each day.
The Horizon problem persists.... I cannot now watch horizon tv on my lap top.
Presently it plays for a second then crashes.

I'll be sticking to aertv.ie for now.....

    Sort it out UPC!

I was trying to watch Fair City last night, I got the error: AN ERROR OCCURRED - Sorry, the video cannot be played at this time" and I tried to refresh, open in chrome, IE nothing and lost some time when I couldn't view. I will stick to aerTV.

I've just been looking at the UPC Horizon TV service and am getting the same message
An error occurred Sorry, the video cannot be played at this time.

Is this is a widespread problem? Is it a UPC system problem or a local problem that I can fix? Any suggestions?
    Thanks.

I was getting the same error message (using Firefox) last week, until I disabled MediaHunt & then it worked, so you might want to check any browser addons/plugins/extensions that you may have installed that are any way related to streaming. You need to be using UPC DNS settings.

I have this kinda crappy horizon box (its annoying me to be honest)

How do i access the login page via the browser to change the router settings on the horizon box (advanced stuff)?

How am i supposed to do port forwarding, QOS, read logs etc? I can't access a dam thing!!! Its rubbish!

I need to be able to do port forwarding on my network. I have a NAS and a headless linux machine running on my network that i access when im out and about through my original cisco router (which i was forced to return and is a breach of contract... upc please expect a letter to upper management about this matter from me)?

Finally my original installation had my modem centered in the house with my tv in a corner of the house. Now my tv and modem are rammed into the corner causing wifi dead spots in my house.

Like seriously UPC... the **** is this crap?

You mean you didn't know the modem, phone and TV box were integrated? Why did you get it then if it didn't suit? ddi you not research it. You should post on the Horizon trial thread I'm sure some of the otehr posters could help you. Was in my mate's house yesterday when he got it installed. Box is very nice IMO. His wireless signal was strong throughout the house even with the box being in the classic position of in the corner of the sitting room. you can access your modem settings through the box.

I'm supposed to getting this box tomorrow am thinking of pulling out after hearing all the problems everyone else is having.

If I have these problems, I presume I can plug in the old modem and box?

I honestly wouldn't be able to do without broadband.
