    I saw a cash in transit truck being escorted today by 2 army Jeeps & a Garda car, but I was just wondering who if anyone pays for this extra security? Is the security company or the banks who's cash was being escorted?

    Not 100% sure myself but it must be the banks. I do know that if in any unlikely case where an armed gang were to hold them up and abduct/take hostage one of the unarmed Gardaí the army cannot intercept until the money is under threat as they are there for the sole purpose of protecting the money.

    Yes...but couldn't they intercept because they are the police and a crime is being comitted?

    That's pure crap. The army can protect the gardi with or without the money being there. They are there to protect everyone on the escort even the security men.
    It just depends on the treat what action they take, may it be use of force in numbers to help restrain to the firing of ball ammunition.

    Cool so I thought it was the banks that paid for it & I know a few years back it was all in the media about how they were actually pay for it, like I think the banks were only covering half the costs incurred.

    But I wonder was this ever challenged further about the funding?

    As above, Army are there as "aid to the civil power". They are there for our protection, and as we are there in charge of the cash escort, they too are there to protect it.

    Security company pays for escorts. In turn they charge the banks.

    Mod hat on, no operational information what so ever should be discussed re this topic. Obviously it is a security risk

    Why cant the Army alone provide escorts? What is the purpose of the Garda Escort precisely? I know the Army's purpose is to aid the Civil Power but what does this mean? Just a general question as we see it every second day.

    The Gardai are escorting the cash, the army are providing an armed presence in case anything happens. The Gardai are the civil power in this case, being the country's civilian police force. The army are assisting the Gardai in carrying out the duty. Hence they are aiding the civil power. It really is just what it sounds like.
