Just on the off-chance that there are any younger children reading this thread, here a simple explanation.

A littleboy wanted €100 badly and prayed for two weeks but nothing happened.

Then he decided to write God a letter requesting the €100. When the An Postauthorities received the letter addressed to God, they decided to send it tothe Taoiseach in Dublin.

The Taoiseach was so impressed, touched and amused that he instructed hissecretary to send the little boy a €5 note.
    ...
The Taoiseach thought this would appear to be a lot of money to a little boy.

The little boy was delighted with the €5 and sat down to write a thank-you noteto God, which read:

    Dear God,
Thank you very much for sending the money, however, I noticed that for somereason you had to send it through the Dail in Dublin and, as usual, thosecrooks deducted €95.00.

Yes and the 47 administration staff that handled it along the way took €85 each and the front line delivery guy took €75. The little boy now owes
    €4165

    I now owe

Many, many people have lots of reasons to protest at the state of affairs in which they have found themselves through no fault of their own.

No doubt, but you are short sighted and failing to see the bigger picture here. The private bankers are the ones who ran up the 64 billion bill you all have to pay, if you are happy taking one up the arse and paying €9000 each for their mistakes fair enough. Protesting is a means to give the people a voice, if it gains enough momentum, change will be inevitable.

    Just extending Darkhorses anology

How's the backlog in the medical card office coming along? Surely they have sorted it out by now?;)

I attended seven protests last year re:Househould Tax and A&E closures but I will not be attending the farce that is set for Sat. 9th. February organised by ICTU.

The reasons being: Where was Congress when the Universal Social Charge was being introduced?

Where was Congress when the Household Tax was being introduced?

Why is this not a one day stoppage during the working week?

This protest reeks of garnering backing for their buddies in Government who are trying to get a debt write down at the expense of the ordinary Joe Soap worker.

Is there something you want to discuss in particular? Any points you have I will be happy to debate if you are polite enough not to make assumptions about someone you know nothing about.

Government spending is up 7% per the figures released today. Most of it spent on social welfare. Where's this austerity we hear about, the only people suffering austerity are the taxpayers who are paying for this public spending and waste.

yes, sheep speak for sheep peeps

when will you people start to understand that the unions are in it for themselves? when I say unions, I mean the so called leaders who do nothing for the ordinary everyday worker, are in bed with the excuse of a government, and are only supporting a writedown of debt as they want a better deal for themselves, not their members, in crook park 2. wait until bailout 2 comes about, and it will come.

dont be a sheep, come out to your local protest on the 9th and vocally express your disgust at union inactivity

Looks like the Garda Unions will be marching/protesting with us.

As will the firefighters, teachers, nurses, HSE, community workers, social workers, politicians and union leaders.

Who are all feeding off the taxpayer and would love to see our taxes increased.

It's terrible that firefighters, teachers, nurses, HSE, community workers, social workers, politicians and union leaders don't pay tax.

It is a protest in support of the Government's efforts to renegotiate the debt, but how would that be at the expense of the ordinary worker?

Congress are hoping for the backing of the workers, the individual Unions of which sang dumb when the same workers, whom they are supposed to be representing, were saddled with the USC etc.

Agree. BUT the workers are prodding them into action now it seems. About time.

from the article posted above on RTE

However, the GRA says it will examine any revised proposals and cost-saving measures that do not impact on pay or hours worked.

What do the GRA suggest? Cut numbers? Cut more equipment?

You have no right to complain about the state of the country unless you are prepared to stand up and do something about it.

Is standing up in support of the unions the only way to do it?

Its true that the unions haven't exactly covered themselves in glory, but the question is really about how workers would be worse off if the government managed to negotiate a deal on the debt.
This would be a good thing, that would benefit everyone, no?

The action they are prodding for is in support of the current Government approach.
