Just wasn't his day is all. Wanyama played pretty crap too was that because of transfer interest or just because he had an off day?

I don't think when Hooper pulled his foot back to shoot a glorious career getting pumped every week at Carrow Road flashed before his eyes and caused him to miss. Sometimes football fans and the media just love to read into things too much.

And yeah I got a 14 day ban for 18 days after I said Newcastle fans have unrealistic expectations :o

But Newcastle are managed by Alan Pardew, man's a genius.

It was a laugh wasn't it listening to him butcher some of the players names.

Good repsonse from the team overall. Really if Hooper didn't have an off day in front of goal it could have been a very big score. Matthews easily man of the match but also delighted to see Stokes have such a big impact when he came on and get a goal as well. Getting him back given he has missed basically the whole season up until last week is like signing a quality new striker.

Ah go 'way with that cliché :p

Seriously though I think a lot of our fans underappreciate Stokes and have forgotten the value of him and Hooper's partnership. One of the reasons I really hope Lennon starts playing them both up top again.

    9.2 from Norwich

Fair play for holding out when that amount is being thrown at him.

edit: SSN now saying it was 7m.
    Still, a big amount.

£7m was the 4th bid. £9.2 was a rumoured 5th, perhaps from an unknown club in an unknown universe etc ;)

After all the condescending reports about how we're a selling club (sic) and are going to have all our players taken off us by superior clubs like Norwich (sic), I wonder will the media consider painting this as a victory for Scottish football, or at least for a Celtic. A lesson in holding your own and demonstrating the stature, financial security and serious plan for success we have.

Structured my post poorly there sorry. The first line was in response to your post. The other part is for everyone else, couldn't care less about your opinion there.

Serious plans for what? SPL dominance? Hooper going to Norwich is the level Celtic are at. A nobody English team is a tempting prospect for your star player, even though your in the last 16 of the CL. It doesn't get better for Celtic tbh.

Lads, Anthony Stokes. Do we think he'll get a chance over the next few weeks what with a lot of games coming up and maybe Hooper being saved for the Champions League matches?

He'll definitely get game time but I'd be very surprised if he starts either of the CL matches.

We're being linked with Doyle now.

There's an art to trolling, a fine line between getting a rise and looking like a clown and you've fallen the wrong side of it. In future you should incorporate bits of reality in your post.

More a case of him being partnered with Hooper than instead of.

Doyle will destroy SPL. Be a good move for both.

Don't know how accurate this is but it appears we may have signed a new keeper, Viktor Noring

It's accurate. Been going down for a few days already.

Bet he wouldn't. Doyle isn't coming, and to be honest, no great loss. Stokes is better, assuming he can keep his head down off field.

Stokes is better regardless of who he socialises with off the pitch.

Correct, however my point is he won't be on the pitch to show that unless he keeps the head down.

Disagree lads, although Doyle doesnt score enough goals he is a real workhouse and is one of the best at holding the ball up and bring others into the game. I'd take Doyle over Stokes any day. Doyle and a poacher like Hooper would be a great combination IMO. Anyway, pretty much irrelavent now that the window is closed!

Pretty sure the Doyle move was back up incase Hooper went at the last minute so he was never going to get to play with Hooper, Doyle and Stokes would be a very similar partnership though.

Think you might be getting a bit carried away with yourself there Bhosca, the reality is we have merely delayed Hooper's departure by 6 months, similarly Wanyama and quite possibly Forster and one I reckon a few English clubs will be sniffing around is Matthews.

The big test will come with what is done with the money received ie hte level and quality of re-investments, that will show a truer reflection of where we and Scottish football stand in the bigger scheme of things.

Two poachers is not a great combination... plenty of games we struggle to create chances for Hooper to put away. Stokes is one of the only creative players we have, hence why they work so well together.

Everyone raved about the number of goals Hooper was scoring last season but people seemed to forgot Stokes scored nearly as many in less appearances and set a lot of Hooper's up.

    I think I was being a fair bit tongue-in-cheek :p

That's one way of phrasing it. Another is that we've retained their services for the rest of our campaign.

Judging by the bids Norwich started at, they seemed to think we were some small club stuck for money that was just waiting for a glorious Premiership giant such as themselves to come along and relieve us of our cash cow. Fact is, we're a bigger, more successful and more financially secure club than most of what I would call the Small 16 (well if there's a "Big 4"...).

Fwiw I don't think Forster will leave. We won't allow it. He's contracted for another 3 seasons after this and is more important to us than Hooper. If/when he does go it will be for a whole lot more than the £2m we paid. Look at Gordon - £9m and he was the third best keeper in the league (and the top 2 were not as good as Forster is now).

Matthews is another I think will be here for a long time. Just doesn't strike me as the type who's only here to get a "bigger" move.

Delighted we kept Hooper and Wanyama. Hooper will likely leave in the summer because he wants to play in the EPL, and with his contract running down Celtic will get less for him than if they cashed in yesterday. It's a declaration of intent that Celtic mean business and can afford to take that financial hit on Hooper when weighed up against having him available to us when we take on Juventus. Time to get stuck in now, try and win the double, and have a square go v Juve.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,805 ✭✭✭Lennonist

It's also a declaration of intent that if EPL clubs want to buy Celtic players, they are buying players with CL experience and there is a premium that comes with that. It sets a precedent that Celtic are prepared - and can afford - to let a player wind his contract down if they don't get offered what they reckon a player is worth. As long as Celtic can maintain a consistent CL Group Stage presence, they can afford to, and will take this stance.

I've got to be honest, Hopper is the best strikers I've seen in Scotland for a long time.
His movement in the penalty area is ridiculous, and any creative midfielder would find him a dream to play with.
He's still a horrible man with wierd eyes but.....

Did often wonder what Rangers fans felt about Hooper actually. He isn't a dirty player, he doesn't dive or mouth off at anyone... he's just pretty bloody good footballer.

He's not likeable like Larsson or someone but he doesn't really have any negatives. He did always score against them though so I suspect they didn't like him much :pac:
