Great, If they had it stocked in Naas I'd drive up from Limerick and pick one up - Dublin's a bit too far with traffic etc
Hopefully after all this waiting around it will be a good box!

It is way too overpriced and expensive methinks. I presume that it has the T2 Tuners in it? I suppose a lot of people will buy these instead of the Humax Freeview HD PVR? :D

    Overpriced?
Just priced a Humax HDR-Fox T2 500GB on Amazon, £210. That box has been on the market for quite a while, that's as cheap as it's going to get and the Walker is cheaper than that at its launch price.

Only needs T2 tuner if it was first approved this year.

Wasn't it approved last year ?

I would need reviews before I would consider purchasing one. Most of the non mainstream brands like Bush and Alba tend to have terrible designed remotes from a ergonomics point of view, really badly thought out menus and generally a pain to use, perhaps the exception to this was Humax, have a Freesat box and it is brilliant. I have no experience of Walker set top boxes or tvs so I don't know how good or bad they are. Pricewise I think it's about right, with some competition it will probably fall to €200. On the Humax box I like going through the EPG at the weekend and recording all the week aheads tv, would like to be able to do this with the Saorview channels along with watch and record and dual recording. Looking forward to reviews.

As I have posted before Maplins have a very good price of €249 for the Humax HDR-Fox T2 which is cheaper than any of the UK sites.I bought one from the UK over a year ago and it cost me £279 including delivery and was then the cheapest available at the time they were over €400 in Ireland. I rate the Humax as one of the best available and have tried the Philips and the Sony which had less features.

According to Tony it has a T2 tuner but it wasn't required for certification.

The functionality is only useful as the content that is available.

UK: 50+ TV Channels. 24 Radio channels.

Ireland: 8 TV Channels, 10 Radio Channels

    It is overpriced.

    Ridiculous argument.

TVs weren't 1/3rd of the price here when we had 1 channel and the UK had 3.

A twin tuner 500GB PVR is never going to be cheap as chips. It's good value for what it is. Whether you think the content available is worth the investment or not is up to you.

Not walkers fault there are only 8 channels on saorview. Same hardware is needed in the box that would be needed for freeview.

Can the walker PVR be used for both Saorview and Freesat? Is it the only Saorview approved box at the moment?

    Cheers

No satellite tuner in the box so it can't do freesat. For a list of all saorview approved boxes check out this link http://www.saorview.ie/equipment/saorview-approved-product-listings/

Anyone actually got their hands on one of these yet?
I'd be interested to find out of series link is working on them - especially with the note on the powercity site saying Feb 2013...

Saorview series link will work on them when it starts in Feb.

I suppose what I was really getting at is - we know the Humax Freeview T2 is currently supporting series link (only on select programs on RTE+1) but will it work in the exact same way as the Walker box when series link in switched on?

i.e. are we at a point yet where we can say if the Walker box is the only one that will correctly and fully support series link? Or if we want the feature we can have a choice of box?

I think the answer for the moment is no... we're not quite there yet

[was asking as there was a suggestion somewhere else in this forum that the Humax would not work and that the series link info would only be available to the Walker box]

Will be interesting to see if this works with Freeview HD series link in spillover areas seeing as it has a T2 tuner. When series link is up and running on Saorview, for those in spillover areas, I think it'd be value for money to have a box like this if it work on both DTT services.

The most accurate answer that can be given right now is we won't know until Saorview series link is fully active next month. From then on we'll know how well Saorview and Freeview series link data will be handled by the respective non-approved receivers.

It's probably safe to assume the Humax will work OK with the Saorview series link data as it has with the test data transmitted on RTÉjr/RTÉ1+1.

Also both the Saorview and Freeview PVRs use the same basic TV Anytime data standard.
NorDig PVR specification is based on broadcast-only services (distribution of metadata via DVB-SI), independent of video and audio formats, independent of API, Conditional Access and DRM systems and capable of operating in free-to-air and Pay TV modes.

NorDig PVR specification follows as closely as possible the DTG specification (latest version D-Book 6.2.1) for the UK market in order to encourage market standards harmonization and facilitate the expansion of the standard PVRs in Scandinavia. Both NorDig and DTG specifications are based on DVB standards, including a subset of the well-established TV-Anytime metadata standard, which has been in service in the UK for years.

looking at the spec previously posted on this forum I did not see any Ethernet port on the Walker PVR. The Humax has a internet portal button for using pre loaded apps like YouTube,Wiki,Picasa etc. when plugged into a LAN connection for only a little extra money (€249)

Hope so! The Panasonic T2 PVR model DMR-HW100 works well with the test data (and presumably also later models). Also it is possible to re-number the channels from the 800s to 1,2,3 etc on the panny pvr. If serial link works when fully implemented the only minor issue on the Panny are the lack of old style teletext on TV3/TG4 and no full programme descriptions.

Powercity Staff are authorised to give a discount on this. If you ask the price is €215 even. They need to ring the head office as the discount is not up on the system yet.

I will try to do a review in the next week. I hope to test it in a border area if possible. I assume series link on the Irish channels will only be on RTE1+1/RTEJnr until February.

It comes with a HDMI, but no Scart lead, even though it has SCART.

Would others like to suggest tests I should do and anything else you would like to know?

    Hi zg3409,
I'm in a boarder area myself and would be interested to know if this box can record from both Saorview & Freeview at the same time. Also if it was left in Standby would scheduled recordings still record. The reason I ask this is, I have a samsung tv which is both Saorview & Freeview HD approved and when an external hard drive is connected it acts like a PVR, even the series link works on the freeview side. However I must tune to an Irish channel to load the Irish EPG & an english channel to load the freeview epg after which once I hit the EPG button it shows the EPG info for both sets of channels. If though I had something series linked on BBC 1 and I switch the TV to standby and the last channel watched was a Saorview one, it will fail to record. But if the last channel watched was a Freeview channel it will record no problem. So I guess I'm asking that from standby will the box record a schedueld recording(from either Saorview or Freeview) regardless of what channel was previously been watched.

Also does the T2 tuner work as the TV I mentioned above disables the T2 tuner when the TV is set up as "Ireland" in the country settings, meaning it won't tune in the Freeview HD channels. It's not a huge problem as I can choose "UK" in the country settings menu and this will allow me to tune in the Freeview HD channels. It does mean I have to reorder them so the Saorview ones aren't in the 800's. Are you able to reorder the channels on the Walker PVR?

Hope I have made myself clear with the above and looking forward to reading your review.

    Many Thanks,
    Doney84

Got an email from Walker today to say that the unit has T2 compatibility. That's good news, but I'd still like to hear from someone who has tried it whether it does Saorview and Freeview and Freeview HD without any issues.
And how it fares with GB teletext, and EPG.

Also I don't think this Panasonic PVR and the rest of its 2012 range has any scart connection, so feeding signal into a DVD recorder or DVD/HDD Recorder won't be possible if one wanted to archive to DVD.

Does it have an RCA connector? Scart to RCA adaptor?
