Icy around Dundrum / Monkstown this evening. Not sure I'm gonna cycle in the morning. I'll possibly be posting in the wimp list in the morning :o

Icy in Terenure already, footpaths are fairly icy/frosty. Looks like it'll be bad in the morning.

Am home about 90mns. The roads were stratingto get that dreaded sparkly thing going.
FWIW my route home is Cappagh Rd - avoid the cycle track at all cost and be very careful at the roundabouts.

Back rd all the way around the airport from Kilshane cross all the way to The Coachmans. Some scary moments due to the camber on the road and can see it freezing Had an slow speed crash on the cycle lane on the airport back road this morning as it was literally freezing in front of me.

From the Coachmans to Blakes X was fine but started to get nervous the closer I got to Balrothery where I live. From the short section from the end of the new surface just before Balrothery was starting to freeze.
It took me 90 mns to do the usual 60mn trip home due to simply tipping along.
It's the car in the morn. Dont fancy any broken bones or anymore knee injuries

It's mad the difference in areas, in D15 the paths were icey before 5, sheltered spots didn't thaw at all. Too bad to go for a run, never mind a spin.

Went out for a 8km walk tonight in Rush and hit the deck on 2 occasions on sheltered lanes. Glad I didn't take the bike.

The hill in my estate is always terrible and we live at the top. This morning it didn't look as bad as one of the days last week (surface wasn't quite as white) but I think it was actually worse. However, except for walking past the first right-angled turn (which cars like to take at speed, their drivers not being made either of brains or consideration), I was able to ride down the hill with the (26" x 1.75") Marathon Winters back on my bike. My slicks wouldn't have handled it at all.

It was a reminder that spiked tyres fare reasonably well on a thin layer of ice on tarmac. As I passed Rathfarnham later though I went a little too heavy on the back brake as I slowed behind a bus that was stopping. I wasn't going quickly at all, but just a little too much pressure on the brakes and the back wheel slid a little. The road had been gritted but I was close to the kerb due to traffic and it was obviously pretty bad there. I clipped out a foot and put it down on the footpath while waiting for the bus to move. It was like glass, my foot had no grip whatsoever. It was a bit of a reminder that even spiked tyres slide when you do silly stuff, but without them I'd probably have been on my ear.

Made the decision last night to drive because it was pretty icy around where I live (NCD / East Meath)

Woke up this morning and went out to find there'd been an overnight thaw:mad:

Roads looked pretty ok driving in - i have to learn to take Met Eireann forecasts with a bit more salt!

RTE are hopeless at this stage. I'm using a Norwegian site yr.no which seems to be a lot more accurate.

Fine around that area whern I left this morning at 7, roads were ice free as far as Tallaght, couple of sheltered spots looked icy but they were all on the pavement.

Starting to drizzle in D5. So far so good on first inspection

Regretted it standing at the bus stop this morning. Then I remembered the state of the footpaths when I was running home yesterday. Hope I'm not regretting it while sitting on a bus this evening, have already considered walking home...

Howth to Dun Laoghaire this morning @5.30am was ok. A few frosty spots on the cyclepath in Clontarf but otherwise a nice spin.

was boring this morning from D14 -> D12. Just drizzly, despite the excellent frost last night going to bed. Still took the spikey MTB in case it gets good later on :D

Same here Wishbone. Went for an hours stroll towards Lusk and back late last night and slipped once. Luckily i did not come down on my right side. Roads seemed fine this morning however heading to the bus stop. Hoping to get back commuting after X-Mas if the phyio gives me the green light next Monday

Thanks. Twas grand when I left this morning too thankfully, I was never so happy to see rain! It's still very cold, but not as cold as last night.

No ice in Rathfarnham or anywhere on my route to city centre. The only ice I encountered was at the viewing point up on stocking lane, saw also some snow on the grass. Maybe there is a chance still for a white Christmas. Will dust off the mtb over the weekend, might come in handy.

I just changed my order for the marathon winters instead, they said they'd be in stock in the next 2 days. Unfortunately that means my order will be delayed in shipping, but sure i've no frame to stick the on anyway
Order shipped this morning via DHL ... will it get here before the snow next week? Will the spikey tires fit on my current commuter (Giant FCR) or do I need to wait for the kaffenback? Will the kaffenback arrive before xmas?. Tune in next week, same bat time, same bat channel...

DHL from bike24 is actually just normal post. It'll be delivered by An Post, afaik.

Up until 5:30, my little darling needed a pee, the roads were much worse than they were the rest of the week, completely iced over.

Started to get a little breezy and heard it start to rain a little while afterwards which obviously contributed to the quick thaw as it was completely gone an hour later.

    Nope.

I have to nick my wife's Trek Fx 'cos it has clearance for the spikey tyres. The FCR will just about take 28mm tyres.

My brother in Munich bought this recently and says it's the business for commuting during the winter months. The only downside is spinning out on occasion but the low maintenance and stability are pluses for him.

I have that too. The gearing is very, very spinny - it's geared for about 20kph. Otherwise, a fine bike.

funny that, my brother in Munich got one of those shaft-drive bikes, and he says it is the business for commuting in the winter. They can't both be right, can we arrange a commute race to settle it?

I've also found that section of the road to be the worst for ice on the way into town.

I decided to wait for the ice to thaw to take a spill off my bike

Fortunately, it was on very, very soft ground, so there was literally no pain involved at all.
