Having an Adnam's Ghost Ship Pale Ale, not bad but not amazing but a well balanced pale ale with a nice lasting bitterness. It's obvious that they've used US hops (citra and a 'blend of others') but not to their full potential. Mouthfeel is a little thin and dry, I'm not getting any of the rye crystal malt they've used, I'd love to get some of that for some homebrew.

It's soon to be released in cans apperently, it'd be nice to get one of them for a comparison.

I wish I could find some Anchor Humming. They've stopped doing it in the offies I go to. I've tried the Steam, and I'm having a Liberty right now, but neither match up to Humming for me. Might have a look in McHughes.

Brilliant, thanks. Not only for the sake of Humming, but I've just spied the Crystal Head Vodka is 60 quid on offer :)

There's two much closer O'Brien's, cheers. I'll save the Drinkstore trip til pay day and pick up a nice selection.

The Liberty ale turned out quite nice, I had it slighty too cold, initially.

this week i am drinking robinsons :old tom: it a legend amongst beers first created by the robinson family in 1899.its a wonderfully warming dark strong ale, with aromas of dark fruit and a palate booming with ripe malt and hops, slowly followed by deep port wine finish, not surprising :old tom: has won almost every brewing accolade including being voted the worlds best ale,and yes its 8.5%

Yeah, the Liberty Ale is lovely, as is their Porter. I haven't tried any of the others in the range as yet.

Gonna try a bottle of Samuel Adams Pumpkin Ale tonight. I'm interested to know the flavour because they used Pumpkin instead of Malt. It will be a new one on me.

I'd be interested in trying the Brewdog Pumpkin as well.

Um... you might want to take another look at that before you start any sales pitches.

Pretty sure they just add pumpkin pureé to the mash and use a lot of pale and crystal malt.

To the mash? What's it going to do there?

    Their website says:
Samuel Adams Harvest Pumpkin Ale is brewed with over 17 pounds of real pumpkin per barrel, adding a full body and sweetness to this dark reddish amber brew. Deep roasted malts, including a smoked malt, lend a distinct roasted character while traditional pumpkin pie spices give the beer a subtle spice note.

    Their website says:

The same as a grain, extract starch to convert into sugars in the boil and turn into alcohol during fermentation

A lot of breweries add pumpkin at mashing.

I never thought of pumpkins as being starchy. Damn you, lack of domestic science education!

Sure roasted pumpkin is really sweet, so I'm sure there's plenty of fermentables there.

That's what I thought: it would go late into the boil, just get sanitised, and simply be fermented from there.

would work sure, but mashing in with it would give you a much higher yield and probably add a lot more "pumpkiny" flavour to the wort I'd imagine.
I've a friend who also just added loads of roasted pumpkin and spices when he racked his beer and he said it was yummy but super cloudy as the pumpkin just disintegrated!

And ofcourse, you'd be mashing in with a cooked pureé not raw pumpkin, or else you'd just get the raw starch and not that sweet pumpkiny flavour.

Doing something like in the video below, except I wouldn't add oil, obviously :D and I'd probably throw a piece of foil over it to stop it charring.

Looking online, quite a few recipes have it as being added at the mash stage.

    One in particular

Coincedently, I had a Southern Tier Pumking on draught last night, a stunning beer. Anyone else tried it?

The Trouble lads have a blog post about their pumpkin beer and how it was made. http://troublebrew.blogspot.ie/2012/10/theres-pumpkin-theme-for-halloween.html

Anchor Porter on the go at the minute, a cracker, really surprised at how good it is. Just finished a Left Coast Hop Juice, a real hop bomb that seems to change character and mellow (or maybe thats just the 9.7% ABV having its effect) as you get through the US pint.

Urthel Hop It and Brewdog double dog last night.
    Both good but neither amazing.
Thought the Hop It wasn't hoppy enough and the double dog had a very hot alcohol feel - loads of malty flavours too.

The Franciscan Well's Oktoberfest is starting today. Anyone heading to it later?

Looks like an interesting enough menu. Had a good few of them before, but the Blarney Blond on cask and nearly every beer on the back page will be the first to be ticked off the list. Really looking forward to this now.

Menu here for those that are interested.
