I'm not by any means a fan of American foreign policy but there is a hefty chunk of them that were warranted and shouldn't be used as a stick to beat America with.

Oh yeah, you'll never find a better country than Iran. It's the perfect place for anyone... unless you're:

gay, a woman, Christian, Jewish, liberal, Caucasian, Iraqi, bisexual, a free-thinker, an intellectual, an atheist, an agnostic, Israeli, American, one who speaks one's mind, lesbian, a teenager who wants to have sex, anyone who wants to have sex before/outside of marriage, a single mother, non-Arab, non-Muslim, communist, socialist, democratic, feminist...

Basically anyone who isn't a male Muslim; and even then, these guys don't have all that going for them.

For me, Iran's most heinous crime (amongst a huge litany of heinous crimes) was executing two teenage boys in 2005. These poor boys were beaten, tortured and humiliated before being hanged from a beam in a public street. They were forced to stand in the back of a pickup truck with nooses around their necks. The truck was then driven away from under them and they slowly strangled to death. The two boys were aged 16 and 18 when they were murdered by the state. They were much younger when their alleged offence occured.

What was their offence? They were gay. They were murdered by Iran for being gay. That is what a fúcked up country that place is.

The Iranians claimed the two boys (Mahmoud Asgari and Ayaz Marhoni) had raped a 13 year old boy, but there was literally no evidence to support this, and they were simply killed for being two young, gay men. They did nothing wrong, yet were put to death by this backward, ignorant country.

The Iranians have also put to death a 13 year old boy (Makwan Moloudzadeh) for allegedly raping another boy, yet every witness retracted their statements. Once again, Iran put to death a young gay person. This was most positively a child. He was only 13 years old, and he was murdered for alleged offences, but in reality his only offence was being gay.

Yeah, Iran is such a wholesome, innocent place. If it was up to me, I'd have sent the US Marines in years ago. The USA might not be perfect (far from it), but it's much better than any of these fundamentalist, fascist, Sharia-Law indoctrinated hell-holes where there is liberty and justice for none.

Welp, you've convinced me. Start bombing them back into the stone age. The Yanks will definitely sort the place out, sure they did such a good job in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Seriously though (I was being sarcastic a moment ago), I am well aware that the Theocracy in Iran and everything that goes with it is bull****, but it's probably well to remind yourself that Iran would probably be a different place had the Yanks and the English not toppled a democratically elected government back in the 1950s to replace it with the Shah of Iran. The backlash was the 1979 Iranian Revolution. Ever since then, the Yanks have been desperate to get back in there.

OP, given the choice, which of these countries would you live in?

    Thought so

Iran's reach is limited, but you could add Lebanon & Syria & Iraq to the "Iran" column.

Given the choice, I know what country I'd rather live in.

So because the US is nicer to live in it makes what they've done over the years and continue to do for that matter, ok?

Yeah because Iran never interfered with any other country.

OP: how does it feel being a tool of propaganda?

I'm not a fan of the their foreign policy these days. But I was pretty happy that they jumped in on Word War II

Try to seperate the government from the people. Iranians are a unique people in the middle east. Just take a look at how things were in the 70's before the Islamic Revolution.

Most of the problems people have listed on here for why Iran is bad...

Are things that are fairly common place in most Arab Countries...

This is true - they are Persian, however it has adopted frenzied arab fundamentalist doctrine as it's system of law and legislature.

Sorry chaps, but just because the USA is a better place to live doesn't redeem it of its crimes.

(But yeah, I'd prefer to live there than Iran, of course!)

And the comparison was of foreign policy, geniuses, not who lives better.

Well this is apparently a thread discussing Iran vs America.

And just because they do fcuked up things in other countries doesn't make it alright in Iran.

PS: Iran isn't an Arab country

Must be a simplified comparison for the mildly retarded so, as it's inaccurate and completely omits Iran's entries.

Well its obviously biased. Iran has been fooling around in the Middle East for decades for its own gain too. But nevertheless it is a comparison of foreign policy (very skewed though).

Skewed or not, for it to be a comparison, you need something to compare. By omitting Iran details entirely, can it even be called a skewed, biased comparison?

Its more a contrast than a comparison, I guess.

    (A contrast based on misinformation)

A contrast of the authors perceived innocence of Iran with the USA.

Most of the problems people have listed on here for why Iran is bad...

Some of them are fairly common in the USA. Minors are tried in some southern, mid-east and western states as adults and imprisoned for life without parole.

Gay teens are harassed, bullied, beaten and run into the ground so that they take their own lives in the US.

The number of black and Hispanic people in jails in the US is alarming, they face great discrimination, prejudice and poverty and fewer chances to succeed than white Americans. They are likely to serve much stiffer prison sentences.

They lose their right to vote in some states having had served time in prison. Black people are still attacked for being black and sometimes killed, the KKK still has popularity in some southern states.

All of these things said, I still feel America is a decent country with just as many if not many, many more great, hard-working, fair and genuine people than the cruel, intolerant and evil ****ers. I've met some lovely people from the US and have had the chance to visit there too, and travelling has thought me that often the outside perception of people is nothing like when you really get to meet them in their own homes.

You can bet your shoes though, if the far-right extreme fundamentalists got control in the US, they'd be running it according to the Bible and this is what happened with Iran. Blame Operation Ajax for Iran not being a secular state today. Discrimination and hate happens in every country, Ireland is no different. Europe is no different. Africa, Asia, the Americas and Australasia are the same.

The Iranian Gov't is by no means a clean character, and their involvement and support for groups in Lebanon and Israel/Palestine is well known. That doesn't mean its people deserved to be bombed back into the stone age. Plenty of other countries support shady and violent groups, commit terrible human rights violations, but they aren't sitting on huge Oil reserves so the "International Community" isn't really interested.

Yes but there is no such thing as official state discrimination (its just the society there). For example, in Iran, those of the Baha'i faith are persecuted according to state ideology. Contrary to popular belief, Jewish rights are actually protected in Iran, as they are anti-"Zionist" rather than anti-semitic.

With regard to your post, I would rank the USA among the most backward western nations in terms of the prison and justice system. And although there are certainly Christian fundies over here, they pale in comparison to the ones in America, and they don't achieve near the same amount of coverage (see the popularity of "televangelists" in the USA.)

America is a very diverse nation. It can't be defined as any one thing. Your average Americans has no interest in invading any other country. The average american wants to live their lives peacefully.

The same can be said for Iran.

Iran does support Hezbollah who operate in Lebanon and Israel/Palestine. Aside from them, I can't think just now of anything else.
