Can you not just use a uk 3ds charger?

No the voltages are all different on them, I checked before. Anyway I still have my DS. I'm more worried about my NES.

My Poxy transformer just broke. Unplugged the NES and it took all the wiring with it. Now my imports including my 3DS are useless until I get a new one. Anyone know the best place to get one?

I picked one up in Power City for about 12 euro. They're very cheap.

Thanks, only place I could think of was Maplin and it was a trip to Dundalk or Blanch since the city centre branch was out. I've got over 100 euros worth of NES games on the way, don't want to look at them being unplayed :P

And all this from a man who didn't even have a Nes til last year!
    €100 of Nes games?
So, just one copy of this?
    Super Mario Bros!

The NES should run happily with any 9V power supply with a similar power jack - AC or DC, as the first place the power goes is through a rectifier anyway.

So I can use a PAL power supply without blowing the power supply? I have the PAL SNES set up at the moment with a PAL power supply so are you sure about this before I burn the house down?

Edit: Seems the retrogamer forums confirm this. Wish I knew about it before I ruined my Transformer! :)

I picked up SMB with Duckhunt over in NYC so I'm good. Two of the 11 games I ordered were SMB 2 and SMB 3 though :)

Also I was just waiting for the right moment so I didn't have to be a 50Hz monkey like the rest of you :P

Consoles with an external power source (NES/SNES/Megadrive/Neo Geo etc) can't be blown the same way as consoles with an internal one.

You can just use a PSU from the correct region without any need for a step down.

Most if a not all of these older consoles run at 5v internally so contain an internal regulator (78XX series) to drop the output from the wall wart which typically is 9V DC.

These regulators will accept a wide input voltage range to up 24V, but the higher input voltage the more heat is generated and this is where problems occur. So while your Megadrive will run when connected to a 12v supply the regulator may overheat and die so its best to stick the as close to the recommend voltage as possible.

The AC power consoles, NES & SNES have a rectifier circuit before the regulator so whether you connect an AC or DC wall wart the regulator just gets fed a DC source. Which is why those consoles will work with any 9V supply that fits, as polarity doesn't matter either.

Now, connecting an AC supply to a DC console is bad. Which is why you're better off stashing away the NES/SNES supplies in case they get plugged in to the wrong console :)

I am not sure how much power the NES draws but you have to watch out for the mA rating on power supplies. e.g. somebody might find some old phone charger which outputs 9V alright but is only expecting a draw of 300mA, which would be a mere 2.7W -which might have been enough to slow charge a small mobile phone, but if you plug it into a device trying to drawing lots of power at 9V it will overheat (or something else bad might happen along the line).

My old 19V dell power supply for my laptop broke, so I got another 19V dell one suited to a higher power dell as a replacement, it doesn't get nearly as hot so I expect it to last longer. i.e. there is no harm having one suited to a higher power device at the same voltage, its not like it will dish out more power than the device needs.

Well ya current requirements should be checked :) My point was a 'console' 9V power supply ie. Megadrive/ Jaguar etc will work fine.

When I do get around to having a beers, you're all going to be very disappointed when you see what this pantry actually is. (Think dingy back hall out of a kitchen with a load of shelves)

The gold wallpaper on the other hand, well...that's definitely a sight to behold!

How about some gold wallpaper in the pantry? Y'know, spruce it up a bit loike roysch? :pac:

NES upstairs working away with a Mega CD 2 power supply (which is the same as the MegaDrive 1 I think )
Looks like a new 72pin connector will be needed soon though :(

I be using a Mega Drive 1 PSU to power me SFC!

Don't forget Console Goods folks for the Polarity Inverter Adapter if you have the wrong polarity!

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 54,082 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

Well the bought NES power supplies output at 1.3mA and 9v so I should be fine. Now for some Super Mario Bros.

Trying to beat tit without warp pipes. Currently at 6-2 with 8 lives. Only a matter of minutes until I end up in a death loop but it's been fun so far!

Super Mario Bros. gets downright evil come world 7. I cruised until then only to be destroyed in 7-1 and 7-2 which became my final resting place :(

Theyre really lovely little boxes aren't they? One of my favourite types. I didn't know they existed until I got that one from Ciderdude!

    Is your own Gamecube modded?

Yeah same as Steve's, it has the full disc size lid on it & is chipped for multi region goodness. Of course, I also have a Platinum limited edition Windwaker Cube all boxed never even used...but thats only for looking at :D The Modded one is the workhorse
