What shows have you seen? I've watched pretty much all the major dramas at this stage so can hopefully point you in the right direction.

    Here are some essentials though:
    Breaking Bad
    Six Feet Under
    Oz
    Deadwood

Obviously the Wire and the Sopranos also.

    +1 for The Wire

My brother in law gave me a loan of all 5 seasons a few months ago and I thought it was brilliant.

Bunk, Omar and Clay Davis (SHIIIIIIIIIIT) have to be my favourite characters

Not to get too into politics cos that only ever ends in arguments on internet forums but one is if Sinn Fein ever achieve any kind of power in Ireland. Even if it was only the presidency. I could not share a country where the majority of people voted for them. Second personal.

It's a great little place to be that's just a bit crap at the moment but things will get better. They can't really get much worse!

I'd agree. Sinn fein, God love them, have all the best intentions for the country but i dont think they would be able to fall through on any promises they make and if they do it would cripple the country. Thankfully I believe the rest of the registered voters know that also.

You'd be surprised though with the hard left moving away from Labour after they've pretty much sold out and hardline austerity like what's probably coming pushing more people to the left.

But heh what do I know, I watch waxed men fake-fight in their underwear.

Anyone ever venture over to the politics forum for a look? It's a warzone that makes the soccer forum look sane!

Just booked my flights to Melbourne following practically everyone else under 30 out of this place..
hey man, cool to see someone else on this forum heading over here! Trust me, once you get over the home sickness and new surroundings you will begin to love it here. Melbourne is a nice place, from what ive seen the few times ive been there.

When are you flying out? If your coming over the next month or so, then thats a good time to, as you will be able to adjust to the weather, instead of leaving ireland and it being ten degrees outside on a good day, andlanding and it being 35 degrees outside in Oz. Instead it will be about 15 degrees here.

Are you going to go straight into looking for regional work and get that out of the way? Or are you looking for skilled work?

Also, prepare your wallet and bank account, as it will take a hammering the first few months! Oz isn't a cheap place to live in, but oh so worth it once you get a secure job down! :o:D

I know its bad, theres some days where id love to be back home with the lads heading out for the night or all getting together to watch the footy but it was the smart choice for me, as I couldn't get the work I needed in Ireland (Plus I wanted to get out of the country ASAP).

Out of 8 of my closes mates from college days, 3 are in various places in Oz, 1 is in canada and 1 is in London now, all living and working there full time. Pretty sad if you think about it.

It's a great experience though, once yous get your finances sorted then I reckon anybody would love it. New change of scenery, new friends, new women, it can be a great adventure.

I wish some of the irish (and british and European for that matter) backpackers who come over here and treat it like a VERY expensive extended holiday would take that advice. They come over, stick to the same irish crowd, spend most of their time and money lounging at the beach and in bars, barely bother their arse looking for work and end up heading home within a month because funds have dried up and go back and start giving out about Oz to their mates at home. They expect work to land on their lap.

People coming over here need a reality check before they do so, its generally VERY expensive here, and you wont get work without busting your ass looking for it unless you have contacts or are very lucky. Once you get passed that then its a great place with mostly sound people and lovely looking women who dont think their better than everyone like back home.

How much would you need to get started? I'd love to go somewhere but know I couldn't afford it. Probably not Australia but definitely somewhere else.

Ten years ago I figured I'd never leave the country. Probably still the same five years ago. It's sad how quickly things change.

I told my uncle a year and a half ago that i would never give up on the country. Now i'm severely reconsidering it.
Is it true its easier to get into Canada than USA?

Canada is much easier to get into than the States, especially if you have a degree.

I'm considering a move too and am looking at maybe the UK for a year or 2 and then onto Canada. I really want to do some travelling also, preferably South America.

I've always wanted to live outside of Ireland though, before any of the recession hit.

Well id think long and hard before getting a 12 month WHV for another country (you only get one, unless you do 3 months regional work) so make it count basically. But if theres no work for you back in Ireland, then its definitely an option worth considering.

AFAIK, Canada has the same WHV requirements and option as Oz, you can get a 12 month working holiday visa, and hope you get sponsored to stay there, or perhaps they have there own version of 3 months regional work to get the second year visa, im not sure.. Or theres skilled visas also. I dont think USA offers a WHV to foreigners (yet!) and you can only stay in the country for like a max of 1 month I think. I think also you need to book a return flight, no one ways with USA, but im not 100% sure on that.

Oh Im not sure man, perhaps 5k or there abouts?! You need a certain amount in your bank account before you get into Oz, thats a requirement on WHV I think, something like 3k.

When I first came over (I didn't come over on a 12 month WHV, I had to apply for a skilled visa), after booking my flight over, fees for the visa, getting accommodation (paying a bond, first months rent up front etc.), renting a car for a month and various other things, id say I had spent over 4k in total. It took me about 3 weeks with various interviews to land the job I wanted, so it was fine after that.

Yeah, some dont like Australia because of how far away it is, but theres a reason why so many Irish and british are come over here. Plenty of work for the taking, and lots of $$$ to be made in the mines.

Canada and England are also options for people looking for work.

Or maybe the south of Spain :pac:

I thought you can live and work in the states if an immediate family member has US citizenship or was born in the states? Or am I wrong there?

Ah right I see, yeah I think if one of your parents or siblings was born there or holds a US citizenship, then you can live and work there. Hopefully they change that soon enough.

Would they change it? After 9/11 and they tightened the rules on immigration i thought they would keep making it more difficult.

I'm the same tbh. I've had riproaring arguements on boards.ie about how I'd never give up on this country, but if it wasn't for the fact I'm extremly close to my mom and brother, I'd be on the plane tonight if I could.

There's nothing wrong with leaving for a few years and coming back. You gotta do what's best for you and your loved ones. Reasons for staying grow thin, with being underpaid, overworked, bureaucracy and bad training schemes.

No plans at the moment. That said, a lot of my friends have left and the list of pro vs con of staying is pretty lop-sided. I don't wanna get into it but Doctors are treated a lot better outside of Ireland.
