Hi all,
Vanilla are planning an update to the site on April 24th (next Wednesday). It is a major PHP8 update which is expected to boost performance across the site. The site will be down from 7pm and it is expected to take about an hour to complete. We appreciate your patience during the update.

    In the Netherlands you can pretty much live on the Dutch equivalent of Dingle and have a regular service to the capital or pretty much any other city.

    Says a lot really :(

    It doesn't really... The Netherlands is the most densely populated country in Europe (not including city states etc. obviously) which lends itself well to having such a good rail network.

    The two networks pretty much reflect the population ditribution of each country

    Not only is it a question of population density, but population distribution, with villages and towns being proper villages and towns with sustainable populations, and very little one-off housing. Also don't forget that a lot of these lines are lines that lead onto European citioes and conglomerations with huge populations themselves, they don't just end at whatever small border town they go through when they leave the Netherlands.

    Not much in the way of gradients in the Netherlands...
    Also IÉ seem to have the auld trains crashing into other trains sorted, they just have train bridges falling down to worry about

    Hardly a valid comparison. with 17 million people, the Netherlands has a population density of 404 persons per square km. With 4.6 million people, the republic of Ireland has a population density of 65 persons per square km.

    Look at Norwegian railways for a good comparison.
