Of all the gags to forget, I shall now vent my disbelief by not clicking the thanks button :D

Zool was supposed to be the Amiga mascot. Felt so betrayed when they started whoring him out to every system under the sun.

Pretty terrible games all the same though.

OI! They weren't that bad, Zool was pretty good I thought. Plenty of decent platformers on the Amiga actually: Superfrog, Flood, Fire & Ice, The Great Giana Sisters, James Pond... When you didn't have a Nintendo of some shape to play Mario then they were good enough. :)

Only played Zool on the Megadrive. Remember being impressed with the amiga version in a friends but was really disappointed in the MD version.

Played it on the Amiga not too long ago and what surprised me most was that jumping using the joystick itself rather than a button felt alien to me. I had gotten used to using a button to jump since those Amiga days, button jumping which is probably standard on most console based platformers? Actually makes more sense that it would be the stick to jump if you use it to move left and right, but a button is much easier.

I think I got Zool 2 with a compilation disc for PC once that I bought solely for an ancient Warhammer 40K game contained within (this one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rsAYvg0JLyI). Even as a kid, the Chupa Chups advertising was dodgy as hell :P

You've already fallen victim to the first hipster rule of iPhone ownership ;)

It's a slippery slope from here to posting up your Paper Toss high scores.

Heh, I know what you mean! I still can't quite get used to that. And when you think about it, you use up to jump in fighters, so why not platformers?

I'd love to mod an Amiga joystick so up was rewired to an extra button.

Is this the FPS game that Spoony was roaring 'Betrayal' at the developers over or is it an actual X-Com game?

I only just picked up the X-Com complete pack from Steam during the sale. Heard lots of good things. I hope it's not an IOS game.

On another note, pressing up to jump can go die in a fire. It was **** on the 8-bits and it's not needed when you have 2 or more fire buttons.

No. This one was only just announced. I can't imagine Firaxis doing an FPS... they're want to do a Civilisation FPS first, surely?

But it's funny how that's what we were used to before Mario on the NES came along (or whatever was the first button to jump example). Pressing up was second nature back then. Respect to whoever implemented the button method though.

I remember the old joysticks, just 1 button function but they were often littered buttons.

    joy021.jpg

I used one like above but with even more buttons, I think 2 trigger ones and others on the sides.

I did like the simplicity of single ones, I had these
    konix_navigator.jpghardware_joystick_konix_speedking.jpg

More than 3 functioning buttons actually puts me off games as I like to be able to pick them up and figure it out, I wish some games had a dumbed down mode where you did not need the function of the button within the game.

I was always surprised there were not more games with spinning joysticks like midnight resistance and ikari warriors. Midnight resistance was horrible to play with the 1 button joystick. And the 2 joystick karate champ.

I think the jump is needed more in platforms (than fighting games) as you may have ladders where 'up' would be climbing. Also in platforms it is more likely to need finer control of left & right while jumping onto little platforms, while in some fighting games if you jump up you land strictly in only 3 places, with no real need for such fine control.

Even when I owned the C64 I hated it. It took a few years to get used to it and when I finally migrated to Megadrive I couldn't go back. Sonic spoiled me :) I do love reading retro reviews by the yanks who go mental when they review a game where up is jump.
