I'm sure if you took the centrally contracted players off their books they could easily afford to run themselves.
Yeah, but with no centrally contracted players, the provinces wouldn't win anything. Imagine Leinster without Kearney, Fitz, BOD, D'Arcy, Sexton, Reddan, Heaslip... With no top players and no trophies, the atttendances would collapse.

Do you mean academy etc.? How do English and French clubs do it?

National TV rights (I'd imagine the Rabo 12 deal is a pittance) and rich sugar daddies (cf: Toulon, Racing Metro, Clermont etc). Plus, the English and French unions pay the clubs for access to their players, I know the RFU have an 'elite squad' and clubs get paid based on how many of their players are involved, don't know how the French work it.

The IRFU want to grow the game and so they have 3 options. They can do it themselves and give less funding to the provinces or let the provinces grow the game themselves. You can't really have it both ways.

I prefer international rugby myself but I would say that the Irish team lack something the provinces have. The Welsh players seem to be more passionate when playing for Wales while the Irish players seem to be more passionate when playing for their provinces. I think Emmet Byrne was talking about this the other night. Maybe its because Ireland never really had a run of success and always seems to underachieve??

My rough figures for Munster from last years attendances.
    Average magners gate was 15,430 x 11 x average ticket price of €30 = €5,091,750
    Average hec gate was 26,000 x 3 x average ticket price of €40 = €3,120,000
    MRSC full member subs 3000 x €80 = €240,000
    MRSC associate member subs 7000 x €30 = €210,000
    Toyota Sponsorship €5,750,000/3 = €1,920,000
    Grand total €10,581,750

You've omitted the effect of season-ticket holders and those attendances.
Don't forget revenue must also fund Munster branch's obligations to clubs, schools (facilities) as well as administration, refereeing, coaching, development.
Not much change left after that if still in the black.

The Supporters Club is a seperate entity to the branch. The only supporters club that is run by any part of the union is the Irish Rugby Supporters Club.

I said it they were rough figures

    You previously said this.

The union is funding development programmes, promotional programmes, staffing, training and facility funding. It also underwrites centrally contracted player/a number of coaching contracts which add up the most sizeable cost. All of this is mainly funded by the national team's revenue stream which outsizes that of the provinces considerably.

So do the IRFU fund everything centrally or do the privince have to do it out of their own income?

The MRSC is run from Munster branch HQ in Musgrave Park and it half a million in subs each year is invested into Munster rugby.

I'll stand corrected on that so if that's the case. This taking supporters club into branch books a fairly new development?

How were they? Who did they beat besides Ireland?

without re-opening the Warburton sending off, with a bit of luck they would have got to final - there back line was far superior to ours

With a bit of luck Samoa could have beaten them or with a bit of luck Ireland might have beaten them even when playing badly. The Aussies beat them fairly easily last week, in Wales.

I don't know if you were watching the same game, but ireland never looked like beating Wales - Samoa would have run us close too

The scores were level in the second half. Ireland had dominated possession and were held up over the line even. Actually Ireland had better chances than Wales despite playing poorly. Wales played well and everything went for them that day.

Maybe it was the early start that day but I remember Wales destroying us in most facets of the game. O Gara O Brien and Ferris spent more time going backwards than they did all tournament.
Kidney had no plan B to deal with the Welsh tactics that day. Actually it was more akin to what we had seen from Ireland in the warm up games.

It would appear that Ireland fans just can't get over the fact that we knocked you out of the RWC... LOL..

When a team loses to the underdog in the world cup, it takes a while to get over it.

Indeed, plus when a team loses to an inferior teawith arrogant supporters at the world cup it takes a while to get over too.

    Pretty much, yeah.

We had a great chance to get to the Semi Final but blew it. Those three trys we conceeded, while great to score, where awful to give away!

It's hard to get excited about, in my case anyway, Leinsters HEC group after such an anticlimax at the World Cup.

The end of the pool stages and start of the 6 Nations should put a spark back into things.

I for one, accept Wales were by far the better team - until we get a new coach, that will be the case, for some time i suspect

I thought this directly after the World Cup, how the Celtic League and Heineken Cup seem so insignificant after having been in with a chance of reaching a WC Final. But when the Heineken Cup started up again all those feelings vanished. Still don't care about the Celtic League though :o

post Christmas , the 6 nations should be quenching my apetite , but even a 6Nations grand slam , will seam flat after the WC let down - perhaps if we had a new coach with new ideas i might be more excited

Some Irish fans were fairly arrogant that they would beat Wales pretty comfortable also.

Wales fans are the best I have ever come across and even put many of our Glory Hunting fans to shame.
