    Hi All Runners !

Here's a challenge for anyone looking for a long run next weekend, gearing up for the marathon etc

The Green Loop Trail is a new 36km multi-use trail that is being opened on the 2nd of October.

The trail extends from the Dublin City (Phoenix Park) right out to Lucan in Co.Kildare along the Royal Canal and back into the War Memorial and Phoenix Parks along the Grand Canal Way. It links some of parks and green spaces in the Greater Dublin region including the Phoenix Park, St. Catherine’s Park, Lucan Demesne, Griffeen Valley Park, Liffey Valley Park and the Irish National War Memorial Park.

The trail is only being open for one day initially, on the 2nd October to celebrate National Trails Day 2011, will be waymarked entirely (in an anti-clockwise direction) and the gates along the canals will be open for the day!

All in its a great run - map of the route and more details can be got from www.irishtrails.ie

seems entirely rediculous you would go to the trouble of waymarking such a long trail that looks like it has tonnes of potential and then only opening it for one day :(

Sounds like a great resource. 36km is quite a run though. Would be useful to know what public transport there is to various points along it so people could run parts of it. [edit] Ok. I see there are train/Luas stops marked on the map. All it needs is the names of the stations/stops. Great idea. I hope it's opened permanentlly.

Is this an event are can you run it at any time of the day on Sunday? Might be worth giving a stretch of it a whack after the novice.

When they say it's only open for one day initially what does that actually mean?
Are there parts of it that are normally gated or closed off to the public?

sounds like it's the gates that give access to the canals that might be locked normally (to keep skangers out ?). I'd love to do it, but won't be around unfortunately.

Warning - read a thread on the cycling forum that there will be an organized cycle of this loop as part of national trails day on Sunday.

If you plan on running it be careful and don't get mowed down by hundreds of cyclists. ;)

I regularly run the Royal Canal from Coolmine to Leixlip and there's nothing closed there, maybe it's further in towards the Park or on the Grand Canal?

From the link posted by spurscormac
The route is of course opened year round but the trail is being waymarked for one day initially (gates opened etc) on the 2nd October to celebrate National Trails Day 2011 and cycling will be permitted oin all parks etc along the route on the day. Depending on interest it may be opened as a permanent trail at a later date!
More relevant info on that thread also.
