Nope, not necessarily. Some guys are obviously taken into the academy straight from school, some a year later.

So maybe those players who are neither in school nor in the academy could be in the sub academy? On what basis would they not be taken straight from school? Too young?

Yeah its players who have left school but aren't yet invited into the academy. Many players aren't physically able for the academy so are given another year to mature while others are given another year playing in the AIL to show why they should be considered to be taken into the academy.

Interesting. I know the Leinster U18's have been training over the summer as part of a Leinster setup.

a lot of time forwards will spend a year in the sub academy cause they aren't physically ready
YEAR 1: Andrew Boyle (wing), Jordan Coghlan (number eight), David Doyle (hooker), Tadhg Furlong (Prop), Conor Gilsenan (back row), Luke McGrath (scrum half), Martin Moore (prop), Colm O’Shea (centre), Michael Sherlock (centre), James Tracy (prop)

of this years academy intake boyle, doyle, furlong, moore, and tracy all came from the sub academy rather than straight from school.

Often they get into Leinster's academy on the back of Leinster and Ireland U20 performances

I would imagine the Byrne twins are there too, along with Conor McEllin. Difficult to know when they don't put anything up about it on the site.

    Is david quirke clongowes yeah!?...

The Byrne twins are going into 6th year in September so wont be in sub academy this year. The subacademy is not confirmed until after the inter pros. Des Merrey, Adam Clarkin, Cathal Marsh are some that are highly likely to get it.

Sub academy is made up of about 10 players who have played for leinster under age schools or club and most of the time have also played ireland under age as well. A lot of them have also been in the talent identification programme from the age of 16/17. They have mostly just left school but some can be out of school a year depending on age. About 10 are picked for it after the inter pros in september and between 3 and 5 make it through to the academy it varies year to year.

Sub academy would be more than 10 players, it is in munster anyway and id assume similar numbers are in sub academy in the other provinces, as the programme for munster v australia game last november had 25 players named as part of the sub academy.

A few of them are up to full Academy now, afaik. would be interesting to see if any move away from Munster. O'Mahony is gone to Ulster and Kelly is on a trial with the Scarlets afaik. Thanks for typing that out, btw.

Just remembered that the Leinster Twitter account actually posted pictures this week of what they said was the sub academy doing preseason training. Not sure if that means its been selected already of not.

AIL isn't the worst place for some of them, props especially, imo. If they are young enough.

Judging by the Twitter pics, Cathal Marsh, Des Merrey and Mark Roche are in the sub-academy.

Just saw Joe Schmidt interviewed on LTV and 9 academy players are currently training with the first team (due to internationals being away) including 18 year old Luke McGrath. This kid is going to be a star for sure.

a tip 20s programme is picked for the summer and then after that players are judged on inter pro preformances for sub academy but tip 20s group normally makes up the most of the sub academy

believe that conor mcellin, mark roche, stephen murphy and jack conan have all been placed in the under 20 tip group. interesting that both roche and mcellin are still both under 19.

leinster under 20s won 13-9 with marsh scoring a penatly,mc grath scoring a penalty and conversion and merrey scoring a try.

    2.Callum O’Connell, Exiles
    7.Isaac O’Grady
    9.Kieran Marmion, Corinthians
    14.Conor Finn, Buccaneers
    19.Will O’Brien, Newbridge
    20.Marcus Walsh
    21.Matt Dever, Exiles
    17.Andrew Keating, Navan

all these player are playin for connacht have come from aboard (2.Callum O’Connell, 7.Isaac O’Grady,9.Kieran Marmion,21.Matt Dever) or from other provinces(14.Conor Finn,19.Will O’Brien,20.Marcus Walsh,17.Andrew Keating) which seem to be the only reason why connacht under 20s are doing alright so far this year as there standout players have decent players to play with instead of poor players from connacht as connacht are buying them in from other places

Rubbish, yes these players have helped connacht do well but the main reason connacht are doing well is because they have had the proper procedures for getting the best out of their limited player base.
They have a much smaller playing pool than the other provinces but have finished 1st or 2nd in the youths interpros for the last 4 or 5 years and many of those players have went into their academy and are in the system and some will play pro rugby
Their schools team beat ulster on thursday for the first time ever, and they are a very good side from what ive heard and seen of them- all super players developed by the connacht academy system

Fair play to Connacht for luring in talent from outside the province. Connacht arent realistically going to go toe to toe with Leinster underage machine they don't have the playerbase.

That said Connacht are giving IQ players a chance to get into academies who aren't getting it in their own province or who are exiles. That is a good thing even if it disorts underage tables.

Also Brian moylett there no 8 played Leinster schools 2 years ago and there no 7 conneally tried to join Leinster but since they didn't offer academy to him he stayed wit connacht and all also 6 players from Connacht schools team that beat ulster are from other provinces or abroad

Would you prefer that that players lose out because their home province doesnt want them?

TBH I don't know how Will O' Brien got a spot with Connacht. From what I've seen of him he's an average player.
