This is really sad news, my sympathies go out to her family. Have always been a fan of her music and always hoped she would manage to pull herself together.

You say that like all the other musicians only had milk and cookies every night. :D

Well there are highly talented musicians, genius even, who managed to survive the temptations of fame....Cliff Richard, our very own Amanda Brunker, Ronan Keating.....the list goes on...

    Why is that now?

Can't you recognize the death of a legend when you see it?

She had so much more to give to the world.

I think you need to put it in perspective.

Think the "best troll" thing has gone to your head.

Nobody chooses to be a drug addict either. Do you think Amy Winehouse wanted to be addicted to heroin and crack and alcohol? Over simplifying drug addictions is really just making an absolute mockery of people who have very serious problems. It's never as simple as getting over it.

Death, in any form, is a sad thing. Elevating one form to a higher status than others is just making light of what is a terribly sad situation for everyone. What happened in Norway is terrible, of course it is, but so is the untimely death of a young person. It's possible to sad about more than one thing at a time.

With the greatest of respect it is you who is simplifying drug addiction. No one suggested that she wanted to be an addict but she has the power of self-awareness just like most other human beings. At some point during addiction you become aware of the fact that you are becoming addicted and then that you are addicted. The lack of sympathy arises from the not-too-unreasonable belief that people in that situation should do something about it.

    It also stems from this:

I don't doubt that there are those who are more predisposed towards addiction than others but by the same token the sheer hellishness of being addicted to a drug as damaging as heroin or crack, as well as the abundant empirical evidence that is the body count of destroyed, zombified young lives causes me to question the intelligence, indeed the sanity of some people. I mean, these are TERRIBLE drugs that can kill you or very easily destroy your life and the lives of your family.

What a shame, I was listening to her just this morning while out cycling.

The only thing she ever debased in her public life was her dignity, and that is something about which we might feel sad (though bizarrely enough, some people will always feel it is their place to feel angry). But what she actually contributed was some of the most terrifically sublime and bewitching music I personally have ever come across.

She gave a lot more to the world than she ever took away, and that is something that not everyone can say about themselves.

If people weren't warned and didn't full know the dangers of drugs then you may have a point. But whether you get hooked or not you know the risks and have a choice to *not begin* before you begin.

Like I said she chose to take drugs and now it's caught up with her. Those people killed in Norway never chose to put themselves in the way of danger. She'll not get 1/1000th of the sympathy I have for them.

People make bad choices. It doesn't make them bad people, and it certainly doesn't mean that they don't deserve any sympathy. She was a talented individual, and it's sad when talented people die like this. It's a shame, if nothing else, that her potential won't be realised. No need to take the moral high ground, everyone makes bad choices. Some are just more affected by their bad decisions than others.

The lady on Sky News that broke the news about Winehouse also broke the news about Heath Ledger and Michael Jackson dying from drug related reasons.

That's three now, maybe the jinx is over.

You could swim very well, olympic class, and suddenly get dragged miles out into the sea by a strong current. Or some waves could smack you into rocks. Or you could get eaten by a shark. Or you could get stung by a jellyfish. All sorts of dangerous, life threatening things could happen swimming (Or bungee jumping or drinking or driving or running or fucking) regardless of how good you are or how perceived to be safe it is. There's an element of risk to everything fun. Or.

Sorry, but this is just a getting silly. There's an element of risk in everything, yep. What's your point? I assume you wouldn't use the same logic to argue against the use of PPE, safety belts, etc. I mean people are still at risk of dying in a car crash anyways, so why wear seat belts? Oh yeah, because it reduces the risk of them dying. Taking recreational drugs increases the risk of harm, sometimes significantly depending on the particular drug. The comparison to swimming just isn't valid.

Yup. There's a risk involved in Russian Roulette too. Some risks are a lot riskier and dumber than others.

Yes there is an element of risk to everything. More so with drugs though. I'm not saying "don't do drugs rabble rabble rabble". I'm saying know what you're getting yourself into. It's much easier to quit swimming and bungee jumping and running or whatever than it is to quit heroin.

Although you'd rarely see someone dying from fucking. Dying like a king. :pac:

Well yes to those. I just think some drugs are okay is all and are sometimes worth the risk.

Not that I've taken any of those risks.

I'd bet my kneecaps you'd disagree even if I made perfectly formed concise points that would be impossible to counter. ;)

I meant that Samantha Simons, the Sky News presenter, won't broke any further celebrity deaths as she's after doing 3 now.
