Jordan Coughlan could end up playing rugby for Leinster and cricket for Ireland he is that good.

he plays Cricket for Clontarf so i'm hoping he'll be playing rugby with Clontarf also. Anyone know where he's from, heard he's from Cork???

is it poaching ? - if so , is it so vital that terenure win the cup - takes away from the whole value of winning the cup IMO - and probably unstabilises the squad -

he's obviously been living up in Dublin if he's been playing cricket with clontarf, hope he signs up with clontarf rugby and we'll see him in AIL next season.

I seriously doubt if Terenure poached those players as that squad walked the junior cup in 2010 without them. Besides Blackrock have been poaching players for decades

Poaching has gone on for a long time. Players are actively recruited/encouraged to attend a certain school. Harris-Wright was in a tug of war between Michaels and Blackrock after setting the world alight for Pres Bray in the JCT. Donncha O'Callaghan was recruited by CBC. Danny Barnes moved to Munchins from Tralee for his final year I believe. It happens. Not very savoury but if a family/player is offered a spot in an exclusive school or a better chance at winning silverware they'll consider it.

It's so rare though that it's hardly worth talking about. A senior cup schools team might contain at most 2 players who have been "poached". I came across it once in my school, and the poached player only ended up making the thirds. I think most of the poaching thing is just myths and rumours spread around the place.

Like once, there was a rumour that Artemiev was lured to Blackrock College for his rugby skills, which is just laughable.

Not going to happen. These days the seasons for both sports are so long that it's impossible.

Jordan was supposed to be one of the opening bowlers for Ireland in the U-19 World Cup qualifiers next month but is now unable to play since he signed the academy contract. He is being allowed to play league cricket for Clontarf this season but not to represent Ireland. So with Coghlan out and Shane Getkate recovering from illness, the Irish selectors are looking for replacement fast bowlers. They were certainly paying close attention to the Leinster Schools v Ulster Schools match two weeks ago.

i'd always have thought when it comes to poaching Blackrock and Michael's leave everyone else in their wake, I remember the irish schools dream team had a young pres bray winger Dowling on the team, he was poached by Michaels, the same year Aiden Kearney was poached from Paul's by Michael's also.

Apparently Ian McKinley was targeted by Rock several times but he wanted to stay in Columba's with his mates.

Joke was on Michael's when they realised they had to feed him as part of the deal. :pac:

Nah, it's really over-done to be honest. One little rumour spreads like wild-fire. I can't tell you the amount of big-headed players I've met, who claim to have been "targeted" by Rock, Michaels and the like.(Not that McKinley is big-headed).
I'm sure schools like Rock and Michaels do try and lure good players to their schools from time to time but it's too rare to be an issue. If you look at Rocks 2010 team, it was made up of players who had been in the school since age 7/8. There were 2 guys from Sligo but they were from GAA backgrounds. Then if you look at Rocks 2009 cup winning side, it's the same story. It's not as if poaching is what wins them cups.

Either way, Leinster signing Coghlan is pretty un-related to poaching. He played his rugby in the Leinster set-up and wants to play with Leister, so I can't see how it remotely resembles poaching.

most famous poach who made a huge differnence was aiden wynne. from marist(i think) to blackrock. took the kicks and distributed well at centre. they needed him that year in a backline with lukey fitz, artemiev, niall morris, dave moore, ian madigan, dave fitzpatrick, to name a few against a belevedere team who had cian healy, ian keatley, eoin omalley and paul odonoghue.

He came from St. Saran's in Ferbane, where he won a Connacht Senior Cup for them too. Must be one of a handful of people to have won Schools' Senior Cups in two different provinces.

Think he was recently released by Connacht, he's struggled a lot with injuries in the last few years. Very talented player though.

Always wondered if he'd ever step up, I think Bradley ruined him tbh. Where's he off to now?

Haven't heard anything yet. I know he was working with an agent back around May with a view to trying to find something in France. He'll probably get something out there like a lot of lads have done having left the Connacht Academy, especially as he has a lot more experience in the Senior side than lads like Sean Carey & David McGowan would have had going out there.

    great user name!

Wynne should have no problem picking up something in France or the 2nd division in England.

    David Quirke.
I would imagine the Byrne twins are there too, along with Conor McEllin. Difficult to know when they don't put anything up about it on the site.

Not sure what the sub academy is exactly but I can only assume its an age group under the academy. The first year of the academy contains players the year after they have left school. So if thats true then last years Leinster U17's will be this years sub academy. The U17's won a tournament in Perpignon in May and contained 8 players from Terenure including Harrison Brewer, Stephen O'Neill and Billy Dardis. Also in the squad were Jack O'Neill from Castleknock, Nick McCarthy from Clongowes and Dan Leavy from St.Michaels.

Nope, not necessarily. Some guys are obviously taken into the academy straight from school, some a year later.
